錫力科技 YC Synergy and the unglamorous business of keeping the lights on
A six-person team in New Taipei City builds hydrogen fuel cell systems for ships, factories and off-grid islands. In 2024 that quiet work got a loud name: Asia-Pacific Fuel Cell System Company of the Year.
Batteries get the headlines. But when the sun drops behind a remote island and the grid simply is not there, something else has to keep the refrigerators cold and the radios on. That gap - the hours after dark, the places the wires never reached - is where a small company called 錫力科技, or YC Synergy, decided to plant itself back in 2012. It does not make a single flashy gadget. It makes hydrogen behave.
The company sits in Xindian District, New Taipei City, in the kind of low-rise industrial address that gives no hint of what happens inside. Headcount is small - public listings put it around six people, with some databases guessing higher. Its chief executive is Mark Huang. Its mission statement is one sentence: enable a net-zero society through innovative hydrogen fuel cell systems. What that sentence hides is a decade of unglamorous engineering.
Section 01What YC Synergy actually does
Strip away the vocabulary and a fuel cell is a box that turns hydrogen and air into electricity, with water as the only exhaust. The catch is that a bare fuel cell stack, on its own, is not a power system. It needs pumps, sensors, cooling, controls, a way to store the fuel and a way to refill it. Turning a stack into something that will run a boat for a week, or hold a factory's backup power steady, is the hard part. That integration work is YC Synergy's trade.
The company describes three application sectors: road transportation, maritime, and stationary power. And rather than sell one slice of the hydrogen story, it sells the whole chain - production, storage, and use.
Section 02Who buys it, and the problem they have
YC Synergy's customers are not consumers. They are industrial power users, shipbuilders, and renewable-energy projects that share one awkward problem: the sun and wind do not cooperate with demand. Solar panels flood the grid at noon and go quiet at night. Batteries help, but they are expensive and they empty out. On an island or a remote site, that shortfall is not an inconvenience - it is the whole ballgame.
The idea, laid out in the company's work with the zero-carbon ship venture Porrima, is to pair renewables with on-site hydrogen production so that islands and remote areas get a stable, self-contained supply. Hydrogen's advantage here is dull but decisive: it stores a lot of energy for a long time, which is exactly what a battery struggles to do.
Section 03The company it keeps
Two partnerships in 2024 tell you how YC Synergy fits into the market. In January, Germany's EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies - a maker of metal fuel cell stacks - signed a partnership to combine its stacks with YC Synergy's system development. The stated goals were unromantic and specific: longer stack life, higher power density, lower system cost. A component giant, in other words, went looking for a systems partner in Asia and picked a small Taiwanese firm.
In March, the venture Porrima - co-founded by Acer's Stan Shih and Blue Economy author Gunter Pauli - contracted YC Synergy to supply customized fuel cells and peripheral systems for a zero-carbon "Blue Future" ship, with a debut targeted around 2025. Shih's stated model is a "shipping company that doesn't build ships," borrowing the integration playbook that made Taiwan's electronics industry - a fitting home for a firm whose whole skill is integration.
Section 04Where it sits in the market
The fuel cell world has big names - Ballard, Plug Power, Bloom Energy, Cummins' Accelera - most of them chasing scale in trucks or large stationary plants. YC Synergy is not trying to out-manufacture them. Its position is the integrator: the company that takes a stack from someone like EKPO and wraps it into a working system tuned to a specific job, whether that is a ship's hull or an off-grid microgrid.
Whether a six-person team can ride a capital-heavy industry is a fair question, and one worth watching. But the integrator's advantage is that its moat is not a single patent - it is the accumulated, tedious knowledge of making fuel cells run reliably in the field. That is hard to copy and easy to underestimate.

The story YC Synergy is telling is not a moonshot. It is a bet that the hydrogen economy gets built the way most infrastructure does - not by one breakthrough, but by a lot of companies quietly making other people's parts work together.
