Ask any mechanical engineer about the worst part of building hardware and you will rarely hear "the design." You hear about the wait. The part gets drawn in an afternoon. Then someone spends the next three weeks emailing machine shops, attaching drawings, asking who has a five-axis mill free, and refreshing an inbox that stays quiet. Vendra, a San Francisco company from Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch, was built on the premise that this quiet inbox is a software problem, not a fact of life.
The pitch is short enough to fit on a bumper sticker, which is roughly where the company put it: "Custom Parts, Made in America." Behind that slogan is a specific claim about how domestic manufacturing should work. A buyer uploads one request for quote - CAD files, drawings, quantities. Vendra reads it, figures out what the part actually needs (three-axis or five-axis machining, a lathe, wire EDM, anodizing after), and matches the job to US shops that have both the capability and, importantly, the open capacity to take it now. Quotes and lead times come back. The buyer picks one and Vendra manages the order through delivery.
The part everyone skips
There is a reason nobody enjoys sourcing custom parts. The information you need - which shop is good, which is honest, which has a machine sitting idle next Tuesday - is scattered across phone calls, referrals, and the tribal knowledge of whoever has been doing procurement the longest. Legacy platforms tried to paper over this by offering instant quotes, but they did it by hiding the supplier behind a markup. You get a price and a logo. You do not get to know who is actually cutting your metal.
Vendra's founders, Shan Mohta and Anish Bhardwaj, come at it from the buyer's side of that frustration. Mohta, the CEO, designed precision parts at Skydio, Apple, and Microsoft before starting the company. Bhardwaj, the CTO, handles the software. The combination - someone who has waited on the quotes and someone who can automate the waiting - is the whole company in miniature.

That line is doing more work than it looks. The insight is that a machine shop's most perishable asset is not its machines - it is the hours those machines sit unused. A five-axis mill that is booked solid is worth nothing to a buyer with an urgent part. The same mill, idle next week, is exactly what that buyer needs and cannot easily find. Vendra treats that spare capacity as a kind of hidden inventory across the country, and its routing tries to point your job at whoever has it open.

What Vendra can actually make
The platform is not limited to one process. Vendra routes work across the core methods a hardware team reaches for: CNC machining, injection molding, and 3D printing. Within machining, that spans three-, four-, and five-axis milling, lathe work, wire and sinker EDM, and surface grinding. It also covers the steps that usually get forgotten until a part shows up bare - finishing processes like anodizing, plating, heat treating, plus assembly and hardware installation. In practice, that breadth is what lets a buyer hand over a single RFQ instead of splitting one assembly across three vendors and hoping the tolerances line up at the end.
The founders' backgrounds explain why the coverage is this specific. Before Vendra, Mohta was the person on the other side of these orders, designing custom precision components at Skydio, Apple, and Microsoft, and, earlier, on USC's Formula SAE racing team. That is a resume of people who care about a thousandth of an inch and a slipping delivery date in equal measure. Bhardwaj brings the software half, turning that hard-won sense of what a good quote looks like into a matching engine that can read a drawing and act on it.
The numbers Vendra puts forward
The company reports that its automation and capacity matching have saved customers up to 40% on part cost and cut lead times in half compared with legacy platforms. Those figures come from Vendra, and like all vendor-reported metrics they are best read as claims rather than audited results. They are also, if you have ever waited six weeks for a bracket, exactly the two numbers you would care about: what it costs and how long it takes.
Who is actually buying
Vendra is not chasing the person who needs one hobby bracket. Its customers are hardware teams where parts are the product: aerospace, defense, satellites, and the broader wave of hard-tech startups building physical things at speed. The company points to names like Apple and Skydio, and lists aerospace and defense buyers such as Anduril, Mach Industries, Relativity Space, Castelion, and Planet Labs among those it works with. For that crowd, one detail matters more than price: Vendra is ITAR-registered, which lets it handle controlled defense and aerospace hardware and keep the work with US suppliers.
That compliance is not a footnote. For a defense buyer, a sourcing tool that cannot legally touch controlled parts is not a sourcing tool at all. Being ITAR-registered turns "Made in America" from a marketing line into a functional requirement Vendra can meet - and it narrows the field of competitors who can do the same.
The perishable asset in manufacturing was never the machine. It was the hour the machine sat idle. Vendra is trying to sell that hour before anyone else finds it.
Where it sits in the market
The obvious comparisons are Xometry and Protolabs, the incumbents of on-demand manufacturing, along with Fictiv and older listing sites like MFG.com. Vendra's argument against them is less about a slicker interface and more about a philosophy: show the supplier instead of hiding it, and match on live capacity instead of a static quote engine. Whether that holds up depends on execution - marketplaces live or die on supplier density - but it is a real difference in approach rather than a cosmetic one.
On the business side, Vendra sits between a marketplace and a managed service. It is not just a directory that hands you a list of shops; it collects the quotes, coordinates production, and stands in the middle of the transaction, earning its margin on the orders that flow through. That middle position is the hard place to hold - too light and you are a lead-gen site, too heavy and you are a job shop - but it is also where the value is if the matching genuinely works.
The bet underneath it all
Reshoring is one of the loudest slogans in American industry right now, and most of it stays a slogan because the mechanics are tedious. Someone still has to find the shop, confirm the capability, verify the capacity, and chase the quote. Vendra's wager is that the tedium is the opportunity: pick the workflow everyone hates - the RFQ - and refuse to leave until it works in one click. If domestic manufacturing is going to scale, something has to make matching a part to a shop as fast as booking a rideshare.
The company is early. It is roughly eight people, seed-funded, backed by Y Combinator alongside investors including Pioneer Fund, Snow Leopard Ventures, and Urban Innovation Fund. There is a long way between a promising wedge and an industry that runs on your software. But the shape of the bet is clear, and it is the kind of unglamorous problem that tends to reward whoever is stubborn enough to stay with it. Vendra picked the boring middle of manufacturing on purpose. The interesting question is what happens when someone actually loves the part everyone else skips.
