In a home in Ranchi, a boy watched his father sit with the newspaper folded to the market pages, checking prices, weighing which stocks to buy. It was ordinary. It was also the first time Utkarsh Sinha saw money as a thing you could study, argue about, and grow. Years later, after two degrees and one company that reached more people than live in Chicago, he is still circling the same question that started at that table: why is it so hard for most of the world to own a piece of the companies they already believe in?
The short answer is plumbing. If you live in New York, buying a share of Nvidia takes a tap. If you live in almost anywhere else, it means brokerage accounts you cannot open, currency you cannot easily move, and settlement cycles that make you wait days to see a trade clear. 01 / The Table In RanchiWhere the curiosity started
Sinha grew up in a middle-class family in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. His father traded stocks, and the household ran on the quiet arithmetic of a family paying attention to its money. That environment did two things. It made markets feel normal rather than intimidating, and it planted a specific frustration that would take years to name: the tools available to an ordinary Indian investor were a shadow of the tools available to a New Yorker.
He followed the path that ambitious Indian students often follow, and earned a place at IIT Kharagpur, where he studied electrical and computer science. The engineering training mattered later, but so did the exposure to a peer group of people who assumed they would build things. Two of the friends he made in that world would eventually sit beside him as co-founders.
02 / The Detour Through ConsultingLearning the business before the code
Before he wrote the software that would define his early career, Sinha spent time as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. It is a detour that reads oddly on an engineer's resume, and it turned out to be useful precisely because it was not code. Consulting is a crash course in how businesses actually make decisions, where money hides, and why obvious problems go unsolved for years. He learned to look at an industry and ask which piece of it was quietly broken.
Then he went to Columbia University for a master's in computer science, and the builder in him stopped waiting for permission. Somewhere between coursework and the New York fintech scene, he started writing the software that became his first company.
03 / Two Million Users, One Dorm RoomThe Martian Wallet story
Martian Wallet began in his Columbia dorm room, which is a sentence that sounds like a cliche until you look at what it became. It was a self-custodial crypto wallet, the kind of product where a single security mistake ends the company. It did not end. It grew to more than two million installs, raised roughly $3.5 million, and processed over two billion dollars in transaction volume before it was acquired in early 2025.
Numbers like that reward a certain temperament. Self-custody means the user holds the keys, which means the software has to be right the first time, every time. Building that under his own name taught Sinha how to ship financial infrastructure that strangers trust with their money, and how to keep his nerve when the stakes are real. It is the exact muscle Mochatrade would need.
04 / The Second SwingWhy Mochatrade, and why now
Most people would coast on an exit before thirty. Sinha went looking for a harder problem, and found it in the same frustration that started at his father's table. His framing of the opportunity is blunt: non-US traders make up the largest retail derivatives market in the world, yet have limited domestic access to America's most liquid equities through compliant channels. In other words, the biggest crowd of active traders on earth is standing outside the building where the best-known stocks trade.
Mochatrade's answer is to let global traders trade perpetual futures on US stocks with up to 20x leverage. The platform launches with fifty-plus US names including Tesla, Nvidia and Apple, uses fully self-custodial wallets, requires no US brokerage account, and lets people onboard in their local currency. It is built on Hyperliquid, and it aims squarely at India first, where more than 140 million people already hold demat accounts.
The choice of perpetual futures is the interesting part. Perps are the instrument that made crypto trading global overnight, because they run continuously and settle in seconds rather than over the one-to-two business day cycle of a traditional brokerage. 05 / The Coffee-House NameA small story that explains the big one
The name is a wink with a point behind it. Coffee houses were the original trading floors, the rooms where people met to argue about prices and shake hands on deals long before there were exchanges. Mochatrade folds coffee and trade into one word, nodding to India's growing coffee culture and to that older history. It signals what Sinha wants the product to feel like, which is a place people gather rather than a terminal they endure.

Sinha did not build Mochatrade alone, and he did not hire strangers. His co-founders are two people he has known for about a decade. The three of them split the company cleanly along the lines of what each does best.
A small team of long-time friends is a deliberate constraint, not an accident. It keeps decisions fast and trust cheap, which matters when you are building risk infrastructure and negotiating compliance at the same time. If there is a single lesson to lift from Sinha's story, it is the way he chooses problems. He does not chase whatever is fashionable. He looks for something people obviously want and cannot easily get, then builds the boring infrastructure that closes the gap. It is a useful filter because it survives hype cycles.
