Tim Zinkl grew up on three continents, built an events business, then went to work where startups rarely go: the factory floor. His company, Pairio, wants technicians to stop reading manuals and start fixing.

Zinkl is the CEO and co-founder of Pairio, a company he describes in plain terms: an AI app that helps factory technicians fix broken machines faster. It is not a flashy consumer product. 02 / THE FALSE START THAT WASN'TEvents, and then everything stops

During his undergraduate years, Zinkl built an events business. It worked. It grew. It was, by the accounts that survive, genuinely successful - right up until the world shut its doors in 2020. COVID-19 did to live events what a power cut does to a factory line: it stopped everything at once, with no warning and no obvious restart button.

It is tempting to file that chapter under failure. It reads better as training. A young founder learned, in real time, how quickly a thriving thing can go dark, and how much of building a company is deciding what to do when the momentum you counted on disappears. Downtime, it turns out, would become the theme of his professional life - first as something that happened to him, later as the problem he set out to solve for everyone else.

03 / THE HARD EDGEEmployee number two

After events, Zinkl went somewhere most software founders never go: the physical, industrial, difficult end of startups. He joined tozero, a Munich battery-recycling company, as its second employee. Battery recycling is not a slide deck. It is chemistry, machinery, permits, plants, and the unglamorous grind of turning used lithium-ion cells back into raw material.

Being employee number two at a company like that means doing whatever the day requires and learning how real industrial operations actually behave. You see how a plant runs. You see what breaks, who fixes it, and how much a stopped machine costs. That experience reads like a rough draft of Pairio - the same world, the same stakes, viewed from the inside before he decided to build the tool it was missing.

04 / THE PARTNERSHIPA four-year head start

Great companies often begin long before their founding date. Zinkl met his co-founder, Matthias Wolf, roughly four years before Pairio existed, at an entrepreneurship scholarship run through the Technical University of Munich. They did not immediately start a company. They started something more durable: a working relationship that had time to season.

Wolf is the technical half of the pair - a B.Sc. in General Engineering and an M.Sc. in AI and Robotics from TU Munich, plus a stint as an AI engineer at Lio (YC S23) building agent pipelines and enterprise integrations. He also grew up in a blue-collar engineering family, which means the two founders bring firsthand empathy for the exact person Pairio serves. One partner knows the operator's world from the inside; the other knows how to point modern AI at it. The idea, as one account of their launch put it, was one worth fighting for.

Here is the demo, roughly. A technician stands in front of a stalled machine. Instead of digging through a binder, they talk to Pairio, snap a photo, or shoot a short video. The app searches thousands of pages of equipment manuals, surfaces the relevant fix, and guides them through it. When the job is done, Pairio can generate the maintenance report automatically from that same voice memo or footage - the paperwork writes itself.

Underneath the simplicity sits serious plumbing. Pairio integrates with the enterprise systems that run heavy industry: SAP, Oracle EAM Cloud, IBM Maximo, IFS, Hexagon and others. It captures the knowledge of experienced technicians so it does not walk out the door when they retire. The pitch to a plant manager is measured in numbers, not adjectives.

There is a quiet contrarianism in what Zinkl chose to build. The manufacturing floor is one of the last places the current wave of AI has genuinely reached. It is not a demo-friendly space. It is loud, oily, regulated, and unglamorous. That is exactly why it is interesting - the problems are real, the budgets are real, and the incumbents are old software nobody loves.

The early evidence suggests he read it right. Four plants in Germany are already using Pairio to reduce equipment downtime. The company was accepted into Y Combinator's P26 batch, with Tom Blomfield as its primary partner, and picked up support from Google Cloud for Startups and ElevenLabs' startup grants along the way.
