The Orb has the manners of an object from a polite science-fiction film. It is round, reflective and just strange enough to invite a photograph. Stand in front of it, however, and the sculpture becomes infrastructure. Its cameras capture the texture of an iris. Its software checks that the visitor is alive and has not enrolled before. The result is not supposed to be a dossier. It is a credential that says, in essence, one unique human is here.
That distinction - between proving who somebody is and proving that somebody is human - is the organizing idea behind Tools for Humanity. Founded in 2019 by Alex Blania, Sam Altman and Max Novendstern, the private company now employs more than 500 scientists, engineers, designers, economists and operators, according to its website. It has headquarters in San Francisco and Munich. Blania is chief executive; Altman is chairman.
The company took the first steps toward the protocol once called Worldcoin and transferred its stewardship to the independent World Foundation before launch in July 2023. Tools for Humanity remains the largest visible builder around the project now known simply as World. It manufactures hardware, writes software and supports market operations for the Foundation. The arrangement matters: the company is not the protocol’s formal governor, but much of what a user touches was built by its teams.
The machine behind the yes
A person begins in World App and visits an Orb. The device takes high-resolution pictures of the eyes and face. Iris texture supplies a high-entropy signal for uniqueness; face imagery supports Face Auth, meant to ensure that the person using the credential later is the person who enrolled it. Under the current Personal Custody design, the image package is sent to the user’s phone and deleted from the Orb. Anonymous fragments derived from the iris code are sent to separate computation servers for the uniqueness check.
One question, four layers
When an outside app asks for proof, zero-knowledge cryptography can return a narrow answer without handing over the underlying biometric material or a legal identity. A game might want one account per person. A poll might want one vote. A ticket queue might reserve inventory for fans instead of automated buyers. The relying service learns what it needs for that action, not everything the Orb once observed.
This is the company’s most consequential design choice. Conventional identity checks often begin with a passport, name, address or selfie and create another record for a vendor to protect. World ID begins with uniqueness and aims to make the resulting proof reusable. The enrollment is unusually intimate; the everyday disclosure can be unusually small.
Identity asks who you are. World ID wants an app to ask only: is one real person here?
A full stack for a single scarce thing
The Orb attracts attention, but the business becomes more legible when viewed as a stack. World App is a self-custodial mobile wallet for the credential, supported digital assets, payments and Mini Apps. World Chain is an Ethereum-secured layer-2 designed to prioritize verified-human activity. IDKit, MiniKit and the developer portal let other teams request proofs or build services inside the app. AgentKit extends the idea to software agents, allowing a workflow to require evidence that a human stands behind an agent or approved a consequential step.
That breadth is what separates Tools for Humanity from a normal verification vendor. Persona, Veriff and Entrust’s Onfido help businesses check documents or faces. Okta manages workforce identity. CAPTCHA successors and bot-management services judge traffic. Other proof-of-personhood projects try social graphs, existing credentials or different biometrics. Tools for Humanity alone has pushed one system across purpose-built optics, applied cryptography, a mass-market wallet, an app store, a token and a dedicated blockchain.
The advantage is a network loop. More Orbs can create more verified users. More users make World ID attractive to developers and businesses. Better integrations give people reasons to use the credential after enrollment. More utility makes it easier to justify placing more hardware. The risk is the same loop running backward: an Orb without useful destinations is an expensive kiosk; an integration without enough verified people is a badge few can earn.
From crypto crowds to conference calls
The company first became famous by pairing iris verification with an allocation of WLD tokens. That incentive built distribution, especially in markets where digital dollars and crypto rails already had practical appeal. But it also made a subtle privacy system look, to many observers, like a blunt exchange of eyeballs for money. The 2024 rebrand from Worldcoin to World acknowledged a product that had grown beyond its coin.
The newer partnerships are an attempt to make proof of human useful before it is financial. Tinder piloted a World ID human badge and age check in Japan, then said it would expand the integration to the United States. Razer added a verified-human path to Razer ID for games that want human-only modes. Concert Kit is designed to reserve tickets for actual fans. These are places where a second account, a bot or a synthetic persona can directly damage the experience.
Enterprise integrations move the same signal into higher-stakes rooms. A Zoom test uses Deep Face to compare the cryptographically signed enrollment image, an on-device liveness check and the live meeting feed. Docusign and World are exploring proof that a human authorized an agreement. Vercel developers can put a human-verification step inside an agent workflow. Okta has described a planned “Human Principal” concept for carrying human authority across automated actions.

Privacy is architecture - and politics
Tools for Humanity’s technical answer to surveillance is data minimization. Personal Custody gives users control of the image package. Anonymized multi-party computation splits uniqueness data so no single participant holds a useful whole. Zero-knowledge proofs reduce what an app receives. Significant Orb hardware, firmware and iris-recognition code is public. In theory, the system can offer a stronger human signal while leaving a smaller identity trail than repeated document checks.
Yet cryptography cannot settle whether enrollment was fair, whether incentives distorted consent or whether every market followed local rules. Spain’s privacy authority halted data collection in 2024 while European scrutiny continued. In 2025, Kenya’s High Court found earlier biometric processing unlawful and ordered deletion under regulatory supervision. Tools for Humanity and World have disputed or responded to regulators in multiple jurisdictions while changing custody and age-screening practices.
Those episodes are not a side plot. They define the market. Proof of human becomes more valuable as synthetic accounts become cheaper, but the biometric root of trust becomes less useful if people or governments do not accept the bargain. The company must demonstrate two properties at once: that the credential is difficult to fake and that the institution issuing it is safe to trust.
How the company could make money
Tools for Humanity does not publish a detailed revenue breakdown. Its disclosed role includes paid or contracted services to World Foundation for software, hardware manufacturing and market support. The developing commercial opportunity sits around World ID integrations, enterprise security, developer services and financial activity inside World App. World Card plans with Visa, a Stripe collaboration and the addition of Dawn Wallet’s founders point toward payments and consumer finance. Developer rewards and WLD-backed incentives, meanwhile, subsidize the ecosystem while it searches for durable demand.
Venture and token capital have funded the build-out. The project reported $25 million in early financing in 2021, a $100 million private token sale in 2022 and a $115 million Series C led by Blockchain Capital in 2023. In May 2025, World sold $135 million of WLD to Andreessen Horowitz and Bain Capital Crypto to support U.S. and global expansion. A $3 billion token valuation was reported in 2022, but there is no reliable public current valuation for the private company.
The market category is still forming. “Digital identity” is too broad, “biometrics” describes only enrollment and “crypto” misses the enterprise direction. Proof of human is closer: a trust primitive for allocating scarce rights among people when software can manufacture participation. Its customers range from an individual trying to receive money to a game excluding bots, a dating service labeling real people, a company verifying a caller and a developer putting human consent behind an AI agent.
That leaves Tools for Humanity with a rare problem: explaining an invisible product through a conspicuous machine. The Orb makes the abstract concrete, then threatens to dominate the conversation. If the company succeeds, people will encounter the Orb occasionally and use its proof quietly everywhere. The silver sphere will become the least interesting part.
