TONI DOMENECH / LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Toni Domenech and the work before the applause

A film student found her way into Hollywood through fan conventions. Toni Domenech’s career has since taken her through talent logistics, agency dealmaking and a New Orleans gathering built around The Originals.

A celebrity appearance begins long before anyone walks onstage. There is a journey to book, a schedule to settle and a payment to arrange. Toni Domenech learned that side of entertainment at Creation Entertainment, where her early responsibilities included talent travel, scheduling and payments, along with event preparation and volunteer organization. It is an introduction to Hollywood that gives the itinerary a speaking part.

Those responsibilities offer a useful place to begin her story. A poster can announce a meeting between a performer and an audience. Making the meeting happen requires a different kind of attention. Someone must connect the invitation to the journey, the journey to the programme, and the programme to the people waiting for it. The photograph at the end rarely includes that work.

Domenech’s career has moved through conventions, an entertainment law firm and talent agencies. She became an ICM Partners agent in 2018 and joined United Talent Agency’s speakers division in 2022. Today, she is listed as a co-founder and director of talent and production at The Original Experience. The continuity is easy to see: she keeps returning to the business of bringing performers and audiences together.

A film student finds another kind of audience

She came to California for film school in 2009. A volunteer stint at a small comic convention introduced her to a possible career she had not anticipated. In a 2021 podcast conversation with Stephen Shamus and Alex Rae, her early convention experience was described in terms of belonging: meeting performers and talking with other fans made the shows more interesting to her.

That is a modest beginning with a substantial consequence. The student had come to study one way of telling stories. The convention offered another setting in which stories mattered, with the audience gathered in the room. Film school and live events could occupy the same period of her life without serving the same purpose. One concerned making something to watch. The other brought people together around what they had watched.

At Columbia College Hollywood, Domenech completed a B.F.A. in Fine Arts & Cinema with a minor in Producing. Her early professional biography records magna cum laude honours and induction into the Laurel Society. It also describes her producing fellow students’ film projects. Her education had a practical production component alongside the classroom work.

Producing is a helpful word here. It puts responsibility close to the idea. A film project needs people and arrangements; so does a live event. There is a difference in the setting, but both give a plan the chance to become something other people can experience. In this reading of Domenech’s career, the practical responsibilities provide the thread between the two.

Her convention work included Creation Entertainment and Wizard World/Ace Comic-Con. She also worked at Yorn Levine Barnes Krintzman Entertainment Law Firm. These are different vantage points on entertainment: the event, the legal office and, later, the agency. A fan may meet an actor for a few minutes. The arrangements behind those minutes travel through a much larger professional world.

In 2021, she also spoke about what performers could gain from meeting fans: a chance to encounter the people who appreciate their work and gain perspective from those interactions. The encounter has two sides. The audience gets to meet someone familiar from a screen, while the performer meets people whose experience of the work may be quite different from making it.

Her discussion extended to inclusion and diversity in film, with Black Panther and Wonder Woman among the examples. She described a movement toward diversity becoming normal and inclusion commonplace. Set beside her convention beginning, those subjects give the career a human context. A gathering is made up of people who bring their own reasons for caring about a story. The production has to make room for the meeting.

THE EARLY ASSIGNMENTTravel. Schedules. Talent payments.

At Creation Entertainment, the practical details were part of Domenech’s job from the beginning.

The coordinator gets a new title

Domenech joined ICM’s Global Branded Entertainment department in 2016. On March 14, 2018, the agency promoted her from coordinator to agent. Her work was in conventions and appearances, including international convention business. The title changed while the subject of the work remained recognizable.

The promotion came in a group of five: Domenech, Lily Fettis, Jess Frohman, Julia Senerth and Greg Jules. Four of the five were women. Domenech continued reporting to Carol Goll, partner and head of Global Branded Entertainment. The announcement arrived after ICM had made a public commitment to reach gender parity in its staff and leadership by 2020.

The career step deserves attention on its own terms. A coordinator’s work and an agent’s work sit at different points in the arrangements surrounding talent. The promotion placed Domenech in an agent role within the area she had been working in. It is a concrete milestone, with a date, a department and a continuing reporting relationship.

A career can look tidier when reduced to those milestones. The underlying sequence is more interesting. Convention logistics came before agency representation. A law-firm chapter sat between event work and the agency world. Each setting supplies a different view of the same public occasion. The audience sees the appearance; the professionals around it see the agreements and preparation that allow it.

An appearance becomes an agreement

On June 2, 2022, Domenech’s move to UTA Speakers was announced. The Los Angeles role focused on domestic and international appearances at conventions, private functions and other events. She was to report to David Evenchick, the partner heading the speakers division.

Her experience already included in-person appearances and private signing deals involving performers such as Michael Keaton, John Cena, Kathy Bates and Orlando Bloom. She had also brokered digital, branded and endorsement agreements involving film and television actors, bestselling authors and social media creators. The business extended beyond the convention floor.

That range gives the word “appearance” some room. A public event has a place and a programme. A private signing has another format. A brand agreement has another purpose. Putting those kinds of work beside each other helps explain the career without turning every familiar name into a claim about a personal friendship.

Famous names can make an agency announcement easy to skim. The responsibilities are more revealing. Securing an appearance means arriving at an agreement that can be carried out. The public moment depends on that agreement, even when the audience has no reason to think about it. A good evening ought to leave people talking about the conversation rather than the arrangements.

The sequence from logistics to representation also offers a way to read her later production role. Booking someone and designing the event around that booking are connected tasks. They ask different questions of the same appearance: who is coming, what has been agreed, and how will the gathering work once people arrive?

A ballroom on the calendar

The next public project has a particular setting. The Original Experience is planning a weekend celebrating The Originals at the Four Seasons Hotel in New Orleans, March 19-21, 2027. Domenech’s title combines co-founder with director of talent and production. Her remit includes bringing talent to the event and overseeing production of the Mikaelson Ball.

There is something apt about those two responsibilities sharing a title. The talent belongs inside the event’s design. The programme must give that talent a place. For a gathering organized around a television story, the invitation carries expectations before the doors open. Fans already have a relationship with the work; the live event gives that relationship a different setting.

The announced format pairs a formal Saturday evening ball with convention programming on Friday and Sunday. It proposes cast encounters, panels and photography alongside dinner and live entertainment. These are plans for a future event. The calendar is the next chapter, with the performance of those plans still ahead.

“We are excited to bring you the magic of the Mikaelson Ball. See you all in NOLA!”

The invitation gives her career a useful stopping point for this profile. The film student’s first convention, the coordinator’s promotion, the agency appointment and the co-founder’s production role all concern stories meeting people. The settings change. The work continues to involve an audience with a reason to turn up.

It is tempting to tell an entertainment career entirely through the people whose names appear on the poster. Domenech’s path makes the supporting work worth following. Travel arrangements, schedules, agreements and production decisions belong to the story too. They determine whether an invitation becomes an occasion, and whether that occasion gives people something to remember.

For a fan, a meeting may become a photograph or a conversation retold on the way home. For the people producing it, the same meeting has been a collection of responsibilities. Domenech has worked across those responsibilities. Her career invites a little attention to the part of live entertainment that happens before the applause begins.
