STIHL built its American business around machines that can be serviced, dealers who know their customers and a Virginia factory that makes more than many buyers realize. Its next test is carrying that old-school advantage into the battery era.

The revealing thing about STIHL in America is where you cannot buy it. The familiar orange machines do not wait beneath warehouse lights at a mass merchant. They come through more than 10,000 authorized local dealers - shops where someone can help choose a chain, assemble a tool, explain a safety feature and repair the thing later. In an industry trained to discuss horsepower, torque and runtime, STIHL has spent half a century building an argument about distribution.

That argument begins in Virginia Beach, where the U.S. affiliate opened in 1974 with 50 employees assembling a single chainsaw model in a rented 20,000-square-foot building. The location offered a deep-water port, an available industrial workforce and access to the largest national market in the STIHL system. Five decades later, the campus covers 150 acres, contains roughly 1.4 million square feet under roof and employs more than 2,300 people locally. STIHL says it has more than 2,700 employees nationwide.

This is not a decorative outpost for a German brand. Virginia Beach is the STIHL Group's largest production operation. It makes gasoline and battery products, bars and plastic components, feeding the U.S. market and exports to more than 80 countries. By the end of 2024, the American operation had manufactured more than 100 million units. The scale gives a new meaning to the company's "Made in America" message: a majority of STIHL products sold here are made domestically, though with both U.S. and global materials.

A machine, plus the person who knows it

STIHL's range now resembles an equipment shed rather than a single category. There are chainsaws for pruning, firewood, farm work and professional felling; trimmers and brushcutters; handheld and backpack blowers; hedge trimmers; pole pruners; cut-off machines and concrete cutters; sprayers; pressure washers; vacuums; augers; push mowers and zero-turns. Batteries, chargers, bars, chains, protective clothing, oils and replacement parts extend the sale long after the first machine leaves a shop.

The customers are equally mixed. A homeowner clearing storm debris may stand at the same counter as an arborist replacing an everyday saw. Landscapers buy fleets. Farmers and ranchers need tools that tolerate irregular but punishing use. Construction crews cut concrete and pipe. Municipal teams and campus grounds departments care about noise, exhaust and uptime. Wildland firefighters introduce an altogether different standard of consequence.

The dealer model solves a problem created by breadth: most buyers do not arrive knowing the precise displacement, bar length or battery capacity they need. A local specialist reduces the odds of a mismatched tool and provides the maintenance that professional users cannot postpone. For STIHL, the channel also creates an installed base for consumables, accessories and the next compatible machine. The tradeoff is obvious. A shopper cannot toss a STIHL saw into a cart beside groceries, and every independent dealer becomes a small but consequential expression of the brand.

The factory is part of the pitch

STIHL traces its technical identity to Andreas Stihl, the engineer who founded the parent company in Stuttgart in 1926. Early saws replaced axes and muscle with mechanized cutting. The same practical idea now shows up in anti-vibration systems, chain brakes, oil delivery, easier starting and electronic fuel control. The MS 500i, introduced to the U.S. line in 2021, brought electronically controlled fuel injection to a production chainsaw. These are not inventions that remove judgment from dangerous work; they reduce friction around the operator.

Manufacturing reinforces that engineering story. STIHL makes key components across its global network rather than functioning only as an assembler of anonymous parts. In Virginia Beach, an automated cell can mold, weld, assemble and leak-test one fuel-tank design in 32 seconds. The plant processes about 16 million kilograms of plastic granulate a year, much of it becoming the lightweight orange housings that make the equipment recognizable at twenty paces. The facility maintains ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental registrations.

Vertical integration is not inherently glamorous. It ties up capital, demands process discipline and can make abrupt shifts more complicated. But it gives STIHL control over tolerances, supply and the way components fit into a broader system. That matters when a tool is expected to start on a paid workday, not merely look persuasive in an online comparison chart.

From fuel loyalty to platform loyalty

Battery equipment changes the buying logic. The first purchase is a tool; the second is often an ecosystem decision. Once batteries and chargers occupy a truck, garage or maintenance room, compatible tools become cheaper and simpler to add. STIHL divides that logic into three systems: AS for compact hand tools, AK for homeowners and AP for sustained professional use. The AP professional system now covers more than 60 tools, from saws and trimmers to pressure washers, vacuums and zero-turn mowers.

The benefits are concrete. Battery motors start instantly, require less routine engine maintenance, produce no exhaust at the point of use and reduce noise. That can make early shifts, hospital grounds, schools and regulated urban sites easier to manage. Professional buyers, however, are unsentimental. Runtime, weather resistance, charging logistics, weight and replacement cost all have to work across a full day. STIHL's AP batteries and tools emphasize constant power, electronic power management and splash-water protection on IPX4-rated models.

The company has resisted pretending that every job has already crossed the same threshold. Its parent describes a dual strategy: continue improving gasoline equipment while accelerating battery technology. In 2025, battery products rose to 28 percent of group unit sales, from 25 percent the year before. In July 2026, STIHL and cleaning-equipment maker Kärcher announced an alliance around STIHL's new ALLPRO professional battery standard. A shared system can widen the number of jobs attached to one pack - and make the platform harder to leave.

That puts STIHL between an industrial incumbent and a platform company. Its brand was formed by professional saws, but its growth includes homeowners, mowers, digital fleet tools and battery compatibility. The difference from competitors is not one specification. It is the bundle: engineering depth, locally visible service, long-lived products and a channel with a reason to teach customers. The risk is that maintenance-light battery tools weaken the repair relationship while broad cordless brands win on convenience.

There are cultural clues inside the factory. STIHL reports average U.S. tenure of roughly eight to ten years and invests in apprenticeships and professional development. Its free Manufacturing Technology Summer Camp has run for more than a decade; in 2025, 32 high-school students built clocks from product components while learning planning and production. That is community work, but it is also practical recruiting in a region where advanced manufacturing competes for technical talent.

STIHL enters this transition with an advantage that cannot be charged overnight: generations of professional trust. It also carries the burden of that history. A company known for combustion engineering must persuade crews that an orange battery tool is not a lighter-duty concession. A dealer network built partly around service must find new value when motors need less of it. And a vertically integrated manufacturer must decide which old capabilities remain essential as the bill of materials changes.

The likely answer is not a clean break. STIHL's market contains suburban hedges, disaster debris, forests, concrete and commercial campuses; those jobs electrify at different speeds. The company can help users by matching tools to the work, providing a service point and lowering the uncertainty of switching power systems. If it succeeds, the orange machine of the next decade may sound less familiar. The route it takes to the customer will look remarkably familiar.
