Sam Heidari already took a Wi-Fi chipmaker from nothing to a billion-dollar exit. As CEO of Lumotive, he is trying to fold an entire lidar system into a single piece of silicon - and manufacture it at scale.
There is a certain kind of engineer who finishes a hard project, sells it for a fortune, and then, instead of buying a boat, goes looking for a harder project. Sam Heidari is that kind of engineer. In 2019 the Wi-Fi chip company he ran, Quantenna Communications, was bought by ON Semiconductor for roughly a billion dollars. Two years later he took over a small startup in the Seattle suburbs whose entire pitch sounded like a physics riddle: put a laser-steering lidar system onto an ordinary silicon chip, with no moving parts, and make it small enough to slip into your wallet.
Most people would call that a step down in comfort. Heidari calls it the interesting part. Lumotive, the company he now leads as CEO, is built on a patented technology it calls the Light Control Metasurface - a way to bend and aim beams of light using a flat chip that can be built in the same factories that produce the processors in your phone. If it works at scale, lidar stops being the bulky, spinning bucket you see bolted to the roof of a self-driving car and becomes just another component, cheap enough to drop into robots, drones, vacuum cleaners and factory sensors.
That line is close to a personal thesis. Heidari has spent a career at the boundary where physics meets a factory floor - the place where a clever idea either survives contact with mass production or quietly dies as a demo. He tends to win there. And he keeps choosing to go back.
Heidari's resume reads less like a ladder and more like a repeated experiment. He earned all three of his degrees in electrical engineering - a bachelor's from Northeastern University, then a master's and a PhD from the University of Southern California. From there the pattern begins: join a company early, when the technology is still a question mark; work the hard problem; then figure out how to manufacture the answer.
He was one of the original team members at Ikanos Communications, where he rose to chief technology officer and helped carry the company to an IPO. He founded and ran Doradus Technologies, which Ikanos acquired in 2006, bringing him back into the fold. Then, in 2009, he joined a struggling Wi-Fi startup called Quantenna as vice president of R&D.
Two years after arriving at Quantenna he was named CEO. What followed is the part that gets repeated in every introduction: he took the company from essentially zero revenue to more than $200 million, led it through a 2016 IPO, and then to its 2019 sale to ON Semiconductor for around a billion dollars. In a conversation with Cota Capital, where he later became an operating partner, he described the arc bluntly as 100x revenue in six years.
You could forgive a founder for coasting after that. Heidari sits on a stack of boards - he has chaired SiTune Corporation and Aerial Technologies, and served as a director at companies including Morse Micro, Haila and BigStream. Any of those seats would have made for a comfortable second act. Instead, in October 2021, he agreed to run Lumotive.
The appeal, in his telling, is that light is quietly everywhere in modern technology and almost nobody controls it well. "Light is in everything," he has said, "from communications to computing and 3D sensing to holographic displays." The problem is that steering light has traditionally meant lenses, mirrors and motors - physical parts that are expensive, fragile and hard to shrink. Lumotive's answer is to do it electronically, on a metasurface chip, the same way a phased-array radar steers radio waves without anything moving.
The result is a device Lumotive describes as smaller than a credit card that can steer a laser and build a 3D picture of its surroundings in real time. Because the scanning is software-defined, the chip can zoom in on a region of interest, track an object, or widen its field of view without any hardware change - a trick the company frames as bringing radar-style flexibility to optics.
Metasurfaces were long treated as a laboratory curiosity. Lumotive's wager, under Heidari, is that they can be built as standard semiconductors in existing CMOS fabs - which is the difference between a science paper and a shippable product.
If there is a through-line in how Heidari talks about technology, it is a suspicion of the demo. Plenty of labs can make light do impressive things once. His whole career has been about the second, harder question: can you make it a million times, cheaply, reliably, in a factory that already exists? That is why Lumotive's insistence on standard semiconductor manufacturing is not a footnote - it is the strategy.
The 2025 moves fit the pattern. Lumotive raised a $45 million round, bringing its total to roughly $103 million, with a backer list that famously includes Bill Gates and MetaVC Partners. It partnered with a company called E-Photonics to push manufacturing of lidar and 3D sensing modules, unveiled at the LEAP conference in Riyadh. And it opened offices in Oman and Taiwan - a unglamorous but telling signal that the company sees itself moving from the lab phase into the scale-and-supply-chain phase.
Heidari is not a founder who performs. He is a senior member of the IEEE, holds more than 40 patents, has sat on the board of the Global Semiconductor Alliance, and advises USC's electrical engineering and computer science departments. He has twice been named Executive of the Year, in 2014 and again in 2017. Yet when Lumotive announced his hiring, his public comment was to thank the team rather than himself: he credited them with "establishing a strong foundation" and noted, almost dryly, that "the industry is taking notice of the disruptive technology we are developing."
That restraint reads as a tell. The people who move fastest in deep tech are often the ones least interested in the theater of it. Heidari's confidence seems to come from the same place his companies do - from having done the unglamorous work of turning physics into parts, more than once, and knowing exactly how hard the next mile is.
Whether Lumotive becomes the company that makes light control a standard chip, the way Wi-Fi became a standard radio, is still an open question. But the shape of the bet is familiar. Find a piece of physics everyone agrees is important and nobody has tamed. Build a team. Solve it. Then, the hardest part of all - make it in volume, cheaply enough that it disappears into everything. Heidari has run this play before. He is running it again.
