COMPANY / TALENT ACQUISITION

Recruiter.com sells you a hiring team. By the month.

When hiring comes in bursts, a permanent recruiting team can be an awkward fit. Recruiter.com sells capacity by the month - and its own history reveals the price of that flexibility.

Dentsu had the jobs. What it lacked was enough people to fill them. During a hiring sprint in 2021, the advertising group’s open requisitions exceeded what its internal recruiters could reasonably handle. Recruiter.com supplied between 10 and 18 additional recruiters over three months. In the customer account published on its website, Dentsu’s Megan Ryan reports 140 placements. The intervention was a temporary increase in the number of people doing the work.

The story in 30 seconds
  • Buy recruiting capacity for a hiring sprint, or a managed recruiting function.
  • Monthly recruiter subscriptions charge for time; staffing can charge per placement.
  • The website and associated IP passed to Job Mobz in September 2024.

01A recruiter is a bottleneck, too

Recruiter.com occupies an easily overlooked space in hiring. A job board distributes an opening. An applicant tracking system records what happens next. A contract recruiter can call the candidate, conduct the screen, chase the interview feedback and keep the process moving. Buying another software account does not automatically create another hour in someone’s working day.

Buying another software account does not automatically create another hour in someone’s working day.

The company sells several versions of that extra capacity. On-demand recruiters support a defined sprint. Embedded recruiters work within the client’s team and tools for a sustained period. Recruitment process outsourcing, or RPO, takes responsibility for a broader function, including process design and reporting. Staffing supplies workers through contract, temp-to-perm or direct-hire arrangements. Those distinctions determine what the customer should expect to receive.

The customer list spans large businesses and smaller employers. BetterHelp’s published testimonial describes needing licensed therapists across the country; Dentsu needed relief for an existing team. The common problem is a mismatch between the volume of hiring and the resources available to do it. Recruiter.com’s specialist network covers fields including technology, healthcare and manufacturing.

02Buy the time. Keep the hiring decision.

Recruiters On-Demand launched publicly in February 2020, following an initial enterprise-client engagement. Its proposition was straightforward: add recruiting help without adding permanent recruiting staff. The original announcement offered virtual or on-site recruiters, flat monthly pricing and the ability to change capacity as requirements changed. Flexibility was part of the product from the beginning.

The economics deserve a pencil. Recruiter.com’s older comparison page describes contingent placement fees of roughly 15-25% of first-year salary. On a hypothetical $100,000 salary, that means $15,000-$25,000 for one placement. A monthly recruiting engagement buys recruiter effort across agreed work instead. The better choice depends on workload, recruiter cost, duration and how many acceptable hires result.

$100,000 × 20% = $20,000

A sample salary-based placement fee. Compare it with the full cost of a scoped recruiting engagement, including months with no hires.

Current pricing descriptions separate monthly embedded and on-demand subscriptions, scoped RPO program fees, and staffing charges. The advertised absence of headhunter fees belongs to the capacity proposition. A direct-hire staffing arrangement can still use a percentage fee. Employers need a written scope before comparing totals.

The platform also offers AI-assisted matching and automated outreach. These tools support finding and contacting people, while recruiters handle the human work. The difference from buying sourcing software alone is the service attached to it. The difference from an internal team is the contract and the ability to adjust capacity.

03A name big enough to grow into

The story began with a recruiting community and a domain name. Its own 2015 funding announcement dates the original company to 2010 and names Miles Jennings and Ashley Saddul as founders. Contemporary reporting describes a recruiting community joining forces with the owner of the Recruiter.com domain. Saddul brought the name; Jennings became CEO.

In May 2015, the company announced more than $350,000 from angel investors, led by Thomas Zipp. In July 2021, its then-parent reached Nasdaq. Jennings marked that milestone with a founder’s letter that described the work in unusually plain terms: “Our team is on a mission to open doors for people.”

There is a pleasingly human footnote in that letter. Saddul liked mountain climbing and skydiving; Jennings described being uncomfortable above a ladder’s fourth rung. Building a recruiting business apparently allowed room for both temperaments.

04Then the delivery business changed hands

An early strain was visible in April 2022, when post-acquisition employee turnover led to a $600,000 reduction in the Novo Group promissory note.

In March 2023, Recruiter.com agreed to move certain OnDemand clients and staff to Job Mobz in return for revenue sharing. The stated rationale was lower operating expense, improved margins and greater attention to platform offerings. Chief revenue officer Josh McBride joined Job Mobz as president. The operating handover preceded the website sale.

The former owner’s comparable filing presentation showed revenue falling from $21.3 million in 2022 to $3.2 million in 2023. Client transfers, business exits and accounting treatment complicate that comparison. The figures describe a restructuring public group, not today’s Recruiter.com brand. Its software and services also faced a basic commercial challenge: recurring billing depends on customers continuing to need hiring work.

The website and associated intellectual-property sale closed on September 24, 2024. Job Mobz became the operator. Separately, HRO Today placed Recruiter.com sixth among midsize-deal RPO providers in its 2024 customer satisfaction ratings. A corporate restructuring and a favorable service assessment could coexist.

05The useful thing to copy

The practical lesson is to match recruiting capacity to a defined hiring window. Before buying, specify the roles, recruiter hours, reporting cadence and meaning of a qualified candidate. Arrange access to the ATS and calendar. Put managers on an interview schedule. Recruiter.com’s published workflows depend on that integration.

For one uncertain vacancy, a monthly engagement may be poor arithmetic. For managers who cannot review candidates or approve offers, extra sourcing can simply enlarge the queue. These are operational limits, not reported customer failures. Recruiter.com advertises recruiters in 48 hours; a matched recruiter is still several decisions away from an employee. The buyer has to be ready to make them.
