The Company That Stocks the Plastics Everyone Else Says Are Out of Stock

A family plastics business that started with two California branches in 1984 now stocks and machines the exotic polymers - PEEK, Vespel, Torlon, Ultem - that keep aerospace, chips and medical devices running.

Ask a design engineer about the worst part of the job and eventually you get to this: the polymer that would be perfect for the part is quoted at twelve weeks. The part ships in three. Somewhere in Fullerton, California, a family-owned company has spent forty years making that specific problem its business. Professional Plastics does not manufacture plastic. It stocks it - deeper and stranger than almost anyone - and then cuts it to your drawing.

The company sells things most people will never name but use every day: PEEK bushings inside a jet engine, Vespel seals in a valve, Kapton film wrapped around a satellite, Macor ceramic inside a vacuum chamber, sheets of acrylic behind a store counter. Its catalog runs from ordinary plexiglass and nylon to the exotic end of the periodic table of polymers. The unifying idea is availability. When another supplier says a grade is back-ordered, this is often the place that has it on the shelf.

01 / THE ORIGINTwo branches, one rolodex

Professional Plastics opened in October 1984 with two California locations - Anaheim and Santa Clara - and a founding family named Kietzke. Larry Kietzke, with two decades of sales and management behind him, ran the Anaheim headquarters alongside his eldest son, David. Their opening market was the one on their doorstep: the military and aerospace contractors that dominated Southern California. David's relationships at McDonnell Douglas, Lockheed and General Dynamics gave the young company its first customers.

Four hundred miles north, David's younger brother Mike - 25 years old - took the Santa Clara branch. He pointed it at the industry that was just becoming Silicon Valley, supplying engineering plastics to electronics and semiconductor makers and, notably, to the national labs at Berkeley and Livermore. It is a small detail that explains a lot about the company: the growth market of the next thirty years was handed to the youngest person in the room, and it worked.

Distribution looks like a logistics business. It is actually a relationship business wearing a logistics costume - and this one started with a rolodex from the aerospace floor.

02 / WHAT IT DOESA distributor that behaves like a factory

There are two halves to the business. The first is distribution: buying high-performance plastics, composites and technical ceramics from the manufacturers who make them, holding deep inventory across a network of stocking branches, and selling that material cut to size. The second is fabrication: taking the same stock and machining it into finished parts. Professional Plastics runs CNC machining, thermoforming, injection molding, heat bending and routing in-house, which means a customer can order raw sheet and a finished component from the same company.

That combination is the quiet strategic move. Pure distributors compete on price and delivery. Adding fabrication turns a shelf of material into a service an engineer cannot easily replicate - cutting PEEK, Vespel or Torlon to tolerance is genuinely difficult, because these materials behave nothing like metal under a tool. It raises margins and it makes customers stickier.

The buyers are engineers and procurement staff in demanding industries: aerospace and defense, semiconductor and electronics, medical devices, oil and gas, food processing, and general industry. What links them is intolerance for failure. A bearing in a chip-making tool or a seal in a surgical instrument cannot be the cheapest thing that almost works - it has to be the exact grade specified, and it has to arrive. That is the customer Professional Plastics is built for, and it is why local inventory matters more than a headline price.

Professional Plastics carries one of the widest ranges of engineering plastics, composites and technical ceramics in the market, spread across roughly two dozen branches close to the customers who need same-week delivery. A competitor cannot beat that with a better website. They would have to buy the same breadth of stock and open the same number of doors, and carry the cost of both while they wait for the volume to justify it.

The best moats in distribution are the least glamorous ones: a wider shelf than the next company, and a branch close enough to deliver tomorrow.The unglamorous logic of the business

The alternatives are real and capable - Curbell Plastics, Piedmont Plastics, Laird/Regal, TotalPlastics, Emco and a long tail of regional supply houses, plus the independent machine shops that handle fabrication. Professional Plastics competes by being both distributor and shop, and by keeping the odd grades in stock that others treat as special orders.

05 / THE MODELGrown on cash, not capital

There is no venture round in this story, no valuation to quote. Professional Plastics has stayed private and family-run across three generations of Kietzkes, and funded its expansion the old way - out of the business. Revenue comes from material sales at volume plus higher-margin fabrication, and the estimated ~$250 million in annual sales has been built branch by branch rather than raise by raise.

The map grew accordingly: from two California branches to a national footprint, then across the Pacific into Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines. In December 2025 the company opened a warehouse and manufacturing facility in Belvidere, Illinois, multiplying its local Midwest capacity more than five-fold. As Mark Casey, president of North America, put it, the opening was "an important step in our long-term growth strategy" - the kind of move that never trends but compounds.
