The awkward part of a relationship is often the opening sentence. Suggest a date, admit a feeling, ask for something intimate: somebody has to go first. Official, a New York startup founded by Zac Stern, tried to make that moment smaller. Its most revealing invention was a button that could say nothing at all.
- Official built daily questions, mood check-ins and date ideas for existing couples.
- Mutual opt-in made sensitive suggestions easier to surface.
- Bumble acquired the company for approximately $10 million in cash in 2023.
- The app closed in the second quarter of 2025.
A relationship with too many tabs open
In a 2021 interview, Stern described dating across the Atlantic while studying abroad. He was in London; his girlfriend was in New York. He kept phone notes about things she mentioned, then more notes about her family. Travel plans accumulated in saved Instagram folders and map favourites. Being thoughtful had become a small administrative job.
Official gathered those scattered tasks into a product for people who already had a partner. The problem was familiar: remembering preferences, choosing something to do, making room for a conversation. The app occupied the stretch of romantic life that begins after a successful introduction, when a matching service has largely finished its work.
That distinction mattered commercially. A matchmaking product can lose a customer when the customer finds love. Official proposed a longer relationship with the same customer. Staying together could keep the product useful. It was an appealing alignment of incentives, although keeping a relationship app useful every day would become its own demanding assignment.

The button that kept a secret
Official's repertoire included shared notes, countdowns, daily questions and suggestions for dates. Partners could swipe on activities and discover a mutual choice. The important design decision was to borrow the familiarity of swiping and apply it inside an existing relationship. The selection was an experience to share.
The intimacy tools made that logic particularly clear. Stern described an “In the Mood” feature: if both partners pressed the button within twelve hours, the app notified them. If only one did, it stayed quiet. A private expression of interest became a shared signal only after reciprocation.

The daily question used another small rule: both people answered before seeing each other's replies. You could not simply read your partner's response and coast. In product terms, the interaction asked for participation from both sides. In ordinary life, it created an excuse to ask something that might otherwise stay unasked.
“Official can be an excellent catalyst for communication”

The first thing to break was the product
There was a less elegant beginning behind that elegant mechanism. In his 2026 retrospective, Stern said he began building in May 2020 and paid a development shop with college savings. The original emphasis on activities collided with COVID. Communication became the more useful direction. Sarah Dempsey, initially an intern, grew into the marketing role.
Attention arrived faster than dependable technology. Official's Republic campaign acknowledged a premature launch and unhappy users. Stern separately told Billion Success that people were ignoring half the features. His mistake, he said, was trying to do too much too quickly. The lesson is useful because it concerns something measurable: what people actually used.
The engineering work continued beyond the early scramble. Former engineering lead Tom Counsell says he rebuilt an eight-person engineering team and handed a React Native app with more than 100,000 monthly active users to Bumble's engineers. Those are his reported figures. They describe a substantial operating product, rather than an idea that existed only in a pitch deck.
Plenty of swipes. Several ways to get paid.
Official's early audience skewed toward Gen Z, according to its fundraising materials. Stern later identified long-distance, college and military couples as particularly receptive users. Distance gave the check-in a practical job. A partner could participate without sharing a postcode, restaurant or evening schedule.
The commercial plan evolved. The Republic pitch described affiliate products and reservation commissions, with advertising and curated-date subscriptions proposed as later income streams. That crowdfunding campaign was withdrawn and investments refunded. Under Bumble, Official appeared among the apps monetized through free access with paid subscriptions or in-app purchases. These were different stages of a business, not one fixed formula.
By May 2023, acquisition coverage reported 368,000 couples across 45 countries. Those figures describe its audience at that time, not paying subscribers. In a market that also includes Paired and Flamme, Official's proposition combined practical planning, playful discovery and communication habits. Its expertise lay in packaging a difficult conversation as an approachable interaction.
The $10 million second act
Bumble's accounts put the purchase agreement on April 26, 2023, with approximately $10 million in cash consideration. The public welcome followed in May. Official joined a portfolio that could accompany people through dating, friendship and committed relationships. For a company built around introductions, a product for established couples made strategic sense.
The priorities changed. Bumble announced the discontinuation decision in February 2025 and closed Official during the second quarter. Its annual report records a $3.6 million impairment of the Official asset group in the first quarter. That accounting charge is separate from the acquisition price. The deal bought a business; it did not guarantee the business a permanent home.
Keep the question
Official leaves a useful design principle: reduce the effort required to begin. Ask one question. Let each person answer. Surface shared enthusiasm. A couple can copy that routine without downloading anything. A founder can copy the discipline of watching which interactions earn a return visit.
The conditions matter. Both partners must want to participate, and a prompt needs a conversation after it. Quietly collecting answers cannot do that work. Official understood the opening sentence remarkably well. Its short life shows how much must happen after the opening sentence, inside a relationship and inside a company.
