Momentive rarely appears on the box. Its silicones, silanes and specialty additives are the reason thousands of other products can survive heat, moisture, motion and time.

The easiest way to understand Momentive is to look for the small disasters that did not happen. The processor did not cook itself. The circuit board did not corrode. The glass wall did not leak. The catheter stayed soft. The lipstick spread without dragging. Somewhere between a raw mineral and the finished object, a carefully tuned silicone, silane or additive did its quiet work.

Momentive Performance Materials is one of those industrial companies that can be nearly anonymous and almost everywhere at once. Headquartered in Niskayuna, New York, it supplies more than 4,000 companies in over 100 countries. Its network covers more than 40 locations across over 20 countries, serving industries that normally have little reason to share a room: semiconductors and mattresses, aircraft and mascara, pharmaceuticals and paint.

This is not a consumer brand, and that is the point. Momentive sells performance to manufacturers and formulators. Its materials become the flexible seal, insulating layer, slippery additive, transparent bond or heat-conducting bridge inside another company's product. The label on that product belongs to the customer. Momentive's reward is being designed into the recipe.

A portfolio organized around failure

Materials science becomes interesting when a product is pushed. Heat makes electronics less reliable. Ultraviolet light ages coatings. Vibration fatigues connections. Moisture attacks circuitry. A hard polymer can make a wearable device unpleasant; a soft one may tear during production. Momentive's catalog is a response to those trade-offs.

In electronics, the company supplies encapsulants, gels, conformal coatings, adhesives and optically clear materials. Its SILCOOL thermal interface products fill microscopic air gaps between hot components and cooling hardware. Air is a poor conductor, so replacing those gaps with a stable grease, pad or cured compound gives heat a better path out. That matters in EV power modules, telecom gear, appliances, servers and compact consumer devices where more computing is squeezed into less space.

Healthcare asks a different set of questions. Can a material remain flexible after sterilization? Is it suitable for extended contact? Can it be molded precisely at scale? Momentive makes medical-grade liquid and high-consistency silicone rubbers for tubing, catheters, respiratory interfaces, seals, diagnostics and selected implantable components. Its pharmaceutical portfolio also includes simethicone used in gas-relief formulations. The chemistry is related to the electronics portfolio, but the validation, purity and processing demands are entirely different.

Then the map widens. Silicone elastomers seal, insulate and damp vibration in vehicles and industrial equipment. Construction products help glaze and weatherproof buildings. Pressure-sensitive adhesives and release coatings support tapes, labels and delicate electronic films. Niax additives tune polyurethane foam used in insulation, appliances, furniture and bedding. Agricultural adjuvants help sprays spread. Personal-care ingredients change slip, blur, absorption and skin feel.

Momentive's best product may be a behavior: conduct heat here, repel water there, bend for years, cure on command.

The moat is in the application

Competitors such as Dow, Wacker, Shin-Etsu, Elkem, Evonik and BASF also bring formidable chemistry and scale. Momentive's differentiation is therefore not that it alone can make silicone. It is the accumulated ability to formulate a material for a narrow job, help a customer test it, adapt it to a production process, document its performance and supply it across regions.

That collaboration creates a practical business moat. Changing a specialty material inside an approved medical component or a qualified automotive assembly is not like switching office stationery. A substitute may require reformulation, new process settings, durability tests, regulatory review and months of engineering time. Once a material performs reliably, both supplier and customer have reasons to keep the relationship steady.

The model is classic specialty manufacturing: sell ingredients and formulated products, then surround them with application engineers, technical service, samples and local distribution. Some offerings are relatively broad material families; others are highly tailored. The company can enter through a product sample, but the valuable outcome is a specification that repeats across a long manufacturing run.

A new name with old laboratory bones

Momentive itself dates to 2006, when Apollo acquired GE Advanced Materials and formed Momentive Performance Materials. Its technical lineage is much older. In 1940, a chemist at General Electric's research laboratory developed a process that allowed silicones to be produced industrially. The heritage business later introduced early structural glazing materials, silicone polyethers used in textiles and personal care, and spreading agents for agricultural chemicals.

Material culture

Silicone rubber from the GE heritage business was used in the soles of the boots worn on the moon in 1969.

That moon-boot footnote is amusing because it makes an otherwise abstract company instantly physical. But it also captures the core proposition: take a material known for an unusual combination of temperature resistance, flexibility and stability, then engineer it for an environment where ordinary rubber will not do.

Ownership has changed more often than the underlying idea. Momentive's parent combined with Hexion's parent in 2010. The company restructured through bankruptcy in 2014. A Korean investor group acquired it in 2019, and the quartz and ceramics operation separated as Momentive Technologies in 2020. KCC Corporation, the South Korean coatings and materials group, became the majority owner that year and bought the remaining interest in May 2024.

Full KCC ownership gives Momentive an industrial parent with adjacent capabilities and a long investment horizon. It also sharpens the company's reach in Asia. In 2025, Momentive agreed with Jiangxi Hungpai to establish a regional joint venture for organofunctional silanes, materials used to build useful bridges between otherwise incompatible surfaces. The phrase “in region for region” neatly describes the logic: technical expertise travels, but supply needs to be close.

Sustainability, measured in formulation

The chemical industry's sustainability challenge has two layers. A manufacturer must reduce the energy, emissions, water and waste in its own plants. It must also show that its products help customers use fewer resources, make equipment last longer or replace more problematic ingredients. Momentive says its program works across people, products and planet, with goals tied to renewable electricity, emissions, waste, water and the share of new products offering sustainability improvements.

Its 2024 sustainability reporting placed the company in EcoVadis's top 15 percent of assessed businesses, with a Silver medal and a score of 70. More tangible to a product designer are the portfolio changes: PFAS-free coating additives, low-emission polyurethane ingredients, materials compatible with recycled polyols, and silanes intended to improve the energy and wear performance of tires.

Harmonie NatuVel gel provides the friendliest example. Launched in 2025, the 100 percent biobased elastomer gel uses plant-derived feedstocks to give skin-care, sunscreen and color-cosmetic formulas the soft-focus, mattifying and cushioned feel normally associated with silicone gels. It collected ingredient awards across several markets. In 2026, Momentive added NatuDerma, a naturally derived emollient. The products do not eliminate the hard questions around scale, sourcing or lifecycle impact, but they demonstrate how a materials company can make sustainability useful to a formulator rather than merely decorative on a report cover.

Where Momentive fits now

Momentive sits between commodity chemistry and branded finished goods. It needs the scale, process discipline and global plants of a chemical producer, plus the customer intimacy of an engineering consultancy. Its customers are rarely shopping for “silicone” in the abstract. They want a server to run cooler, a tire to roll more efficiently, a medical seal to survive sterilization or a foundation to feel less greasy.

That position is becoming more consequential as physical products grow denser and more demanding. AI servers create punishing heat loads. Electric vehicles combine high voltage, vibration and temperature cycling. Wearable medical devices must be soft, durable and manufacturable. Energy-efficient buildings require better insulation and longer-lasting seals. Each trend creates a problem at an interface: chip and heat sink, glass and frame, sensor and skin, silica and rubber.

Momentive's opportunity is to own those interfaces. Its risk is equally clear. It operates in cyclical industrial markets, depends on energy and raw materials, faces powerful global competitors and must prove that sustainability claims survive rigorous measurement. Product qualification can protect an incumbent, but it can also slow the adoption of a new formulation.

In June 2025, Craig Borkowski returned to lead the company after earlier roles in electronic materials and strategy. A year later, Momentive appointed Jim Knaub chief marketing officer, asking him to translate technical innovation into clearer customer value. That job description says more than it seems. The company's science is only valuable when an engineer, purchasing team or product manager understands exactly which expensive failure it prevents.

Consumers may never learn the name. Momentive can live with that. In specialty materials, invisibility is often proof that everything worked.
