FundApps wants to end Wall Street’s duplicated homework

Hundreds of investment firms face the same regulatory puzzles. FundApps built a business around solving them together. Its merger with SteelEye raises a harder question: can the rest of compliance work that way, too?

The trade is done. The paperwork is just getting started. For an investment firm, owning a slice of a company can trigger a disclosure obligation; a short position, takeover situation or investment in a protected industry can bring another set of rules. Multiply that across countries and portfolios, and an apparently simple question - what must we report? - becomes a daily research assignment.

FundApps sells a way to share that assignment. Its cloud software checks investment positions against maintained regulatory rules, flags obligations and helps prepare filings. The company says it monitors more than $30 trillion in assets across over 100 jurisdictions. That is money passing through its compliance checks, not a portfolio FundApps manages. Its business is keeping track of what other people’s investments require them to do.

The expensive habit of doing it all again

Andrew Patrick White started FundApps in 2010, after developing the idea during a career break in Brazil. The early office was a spare room in a pub. There is something pleasingly appropriate about a business built around shared knowledge beginning somewhere designed for conversation.

James Crowley joined in September 2011 as co-founder and chief technology officer. His account of the role describes leading the technology and product team until July 2018. From the beginning, the assignment required both software development and an understanding of how investment firms actually operate.

The underlying complaint was duplication. FundApps’ founders had seen financial institutions rely on manual processes that produced inconsistent results and high operating costs. Each firm could pay people to study changing obligations and maintain its own calculations. A shared service could spread that work across customers while keeping each firm’s monitoring tied to its own holdings.

“my goal was to eliminate duplicated compliance work across firms”

That is a narrower, more useful promise than making regulation disappear. FundApps brings together legal information, market data and coded rules. Its client community adds another layer: practitioners can compare interpretations and raise questions. The commercial proposition rests on maintaining that collective machinery, not simply delivering an application and leaving the customer to update it.

A rule is only as good as its ingredients

Consider the journey from a holding to an alert. FundApps’ technical documentation describes a positions file containing instruments and portfolios. Clients upload it through an API; the rule engine produces post-trade results. The structure matters because a security’s identity, the quantity held and its relationship to the portfolio all help determine the outcome.

Shareholding Disclosure covers major ownership, short selling and takeover requirements. Position Limits addresses derivatives exposures against exchange and regulator limits. Sensitive Industries tackles another complication: ownership restrictions associated with protected sectors and foreign investment. These are related problems, but they ask different questions of the same investment book.

Filing Manager carries the process toward the regulator by generating and submitting supported documents. AIFMD Annex IV Reporting, launched in March 2025, addresses a different reporting burden: assembling information about funds, exposures and other required fields. Its advertised features include visible calculations, a change history and XML output. Those details matter when somebody needs to explain how a reported number was produced.

The less photogenic work happens upstream. Data Adapter takes a basic positions CSV, obtains information from supported providers and maps it into FundApps’ specification. Its documentation explicitly acknowledges gaps in individual fields and asset-class coverage at Bloomberg and LSEG. Buying a rules engine therefore leaves a practical responsibility: determine whether the data needed for the actual portfolio is present and usable.

Even the API distinguishes between validation and rule processing. A file can fail validation before the rules run; results can include unknowns alongside warnings and disclosures. For a prospective buyer, that is a useful place to start a demonstration. Ask what happens to an incomplete instrument record before admiring the dashboard.

Four weeks to get ready

Viridian Asset Management offers a concrete example. The Hong Kong investment manager wanted to begin trading across several Asia-Pacific markets, with four weeks available to implement disclosure monitoring. In FundApps’ published case study, chief compliance officer Kamila Skowera describes global coverage and access to an Asia-based team as important selection factors.

The Singapore team broke implementation into scheduled tasks and regular check-ins. The case study says the system was ready for launch. This is a vendor-published account, but the operational lesson is specific: a deadline needs a calendar, a defined data process and people awake in the customer’s time zone. A long feature list cannot substitute for those arrangements.

FundApps’ named customers also include Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Quilter and Vontobel. The mix helps explain its place in the market. A pension fund and a hedge fund may invest differently, yet both need defensible disclosure processes. FundApps sells to the teams responsible for those obligations, with the daily workflow as its point of entry.

The subscription includes tomorrow’s changes

This is business-to-business subscription software with a continuing content obligation. The legal rules are part of the product’s usefulness. FundApps’ documentation specifies an aosphere subscription for Shareholding Disclosure; market-data services bring their own dependencies. The buying decision consequently includes the software, content access, data preparation and the staff time needed to operate the process.

A sensible cost comparison would put those requirements beside the internal work they replace: maintaining interpretations, checking positions, preparing forms and preserving an audit history. That is an assessment framework, not a promised saving. The economic case will depend on the firm’s portfolio, jurisdictions, existing licences and volume of reporting.

Nor does FundApps own this problem. Confluence Signal offers disclosure, position-limit and sensitive-industry monitoring, including legal expertise and generated forms. Droit’s Position Reporting uses codified decision logic informed by industry consensus through Endoxa. Shared interpretation and automation are competitive requirements in this market. FundApps has to win on coverage, implementation, explainability and the experience of using those capabilities together.

Its partnerships are part of that argument. The June 2025 Aladdin announcement described an integration for common clients of FundApps and BlackRock’s technology platform. FundApps now presents it as live. Existing SimCorp and Broadridge connections follow similar logic: put specialist compliance checks into the investment workflow customers already use, reducing the need to move data between disconnected systems.

A bigger company, a harder assignment

For roughly a decade, White financed growth internally. SEP became the first external investor in 2021. His explanation for changing course was practical: the company had more room to grow and wanted additional help building for it. The sequence offers a useful counterpoint to the assumption that a software company must raise institutional capital at birth.

FTV Capital invested in July 2025, backing product development and expansion, including potential combinations with other compliance businesses. SEP exited. In November, FundApps and SteelEye announced their merger, supported by further FTV equity. SteelEye brought trade and communications surveillance to FundApps’ monitoring and reporting business, widening the group’s remit to another part of financial oversight.

2026

Frederic Ceyte takes over as CEO.

Frederic Ceyte became chief executive on March 31, 2026. The announcement put the combined group at more than 350 clients, about 250 employees and over £50 million in annual recurring revenue. Those are group figures after SteelEye; ARR is a subscription run-rate measure, not the same thing as annual recognized revenue.

Ceyte’s stated priorities include unifying the platform and deploying agentic AI with clients. The distinction between an announced direction and a finished product matters here. The merger combines businesses with complementary capabilities. The next assignment is making their communications, trades and positions data useful together in customers’ working lives.

Expansion has also reached adjacent tasks. September 2025’s Sanctions Screening launch uses BIGTXN data to check securities against sanctions regimes, including pre-trade checks. A November partnership with WTax connects clients to withholding-tax and class-action recovery expertise. The latter is a relationship between specialists, rather than evidence that FundApps itself has become a tax-recovery business.

People, planet, paperwork

The company’s public personality is less buttoned-up than its subject matter. Its team photographs include colleagues building a bicycle, while its values pages emphasize people and environmental impact. Those commitments have an external reference point: B Lab records certification since December 2018 and a current B Impact score of 106.2, compared with 90.3 in 2022.

There is also evidence of specific spending behind the language. In its 2021 review, FundApps reported matching £20,000 in employee charitable donations. The same review recorded ISO 27001 certification and new integration partnerships. In this business, workplace commitments and information security sit unusually close together: customers are entrusting a supplier with sensitive operational work.

Take the maintenance seriously

The lesson other businesses can copy is straightforward. Find an expensive task that customers repeat, then take responsibility for keeping the solution current. In FundApps’ case, the continuing work includes interpreting rules, maintaining data connections and supporting filings. Its 2021 ASIC connection, for example, addressed a particular regulator’s submission protocol rather than stopping at a generic report export.

For buyers, the corresponding lesson is to test the whole chain. A portfolio with unsupported data needs, a missing content subscription or unresolved exceptions will not become reliable merely because the interface is attractive. For FundApps, the larger group now adds another test: preserving that attention to detail while joining surveillance to the homework it already knows how to do.

Keep following the paperwork
