Hyaluronic acid is one of the most useful molecules in modern medicine and beauty. It cushions joints, lubricates eyes, and plumps skin. It is also stubbornly difficult to use. The molecule is too large to slip through skin on its own, and once it is inside the body, enzymes break it down within days. For decades the industry's answer was blunt: load pre-formed HA into a syringe and inject it, over and over.

Fount Bio, a life-science company founded in 2018 and headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts, was built to break that pattern. Rather than delivering finished hyaluronic acid, Fount Bio delivers the building blocks - and lets them assemble into a durable HA matrix directly inside the target tissue. The company calls the underlying technology the Flī-HA platform, short for functional-ligand hyaluronic acid.

The approach rests on bioorthogonal chemistry, the field of fast, selective "click" reactions honored with the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Fount Bio applies those reactions inside living tissue, where its HA precursors transform into a high-molecular-weight, biostable matrix in situ. The result is a form of hyaluronic acid that can be delivered topically and stays put.

It is a small team - roughly nine people - pursuing a large idea. In February 2024 that idea earned outside validation when the company's lead product, Flī-Derm, was named Innovation of the Year at the IMCAS World Congress in Paris.
