A power plant hiding in the basement

Somewhere in a Swedish suburb, a heat pump switches off for eleven minutes and nobody notices. A neighbour's EV pauses its charge; a home battery quietly discharges into the evening peak. Individually, these are rounding errors. Coordinated across thousands of homes, they behave like a power station that no one had to build. That coordination is the business of Emulate Energy.

Founded in Lund in 2020, Emulate Energy builds white-label software that lets electricity utilities connect, control and monetize the distributed energy resources already sitting in their customers' homes - EV chargers, heat pumps, home batteries, rooftop solar and smart meters. The pitch is direct: turn every home into a grid-ready asset, without asking anyone to change their tariff or their habits.

The idea sits at the center of the energy transition's least glamorous problem. Renewables are intermittent; demand is not. As millions of electric cars and heat pumps come online, the grid needs flexibility - the ability to nudge consumption up or down in real time to match supply. Building more wires and batteries is slow and expensive. Emulate's bet is that most of the flexibility the grid needs is already installed behind the meter, waiting for software to conduct it.

The name is the thesis: the software emulates a physical battery using the ordinary devices a home already owns.
Who It Serves

Utilities, without the vendor lock-in

Emulate sells to mid-sized electricity utilities, energy retailers, distribution system operators and aggregators - primarily across Sweden, Germany, Finland and, increasingly, the United States. The end beneficiary is the household, but the customer is the utility, and Emulate has designed the product around a specific anxiety of that buyer: the fear of handing control of customer relationships to a software vendor.

So the platform ships white-label, keeps the utility in total control, and promises no vendor lock-in. It also asks nothing of the end customer. There is no tariff migration and no behaviour change; the software works with existing fixed-price plans, reducing grid charges first and then monetizing whatever flexibility remains. For a utility weighing a pilot, "your customers won't notice, and you keep the keys" is a quieter sell than most cleantech makes - and an easier one.

Named partners and customers span the Nordic energy landscape and beyond: Skellefteå Kraft, Öresundskraft, Bixia, Telinet Energi, Modity, Göteborg Energi, Greenely, Germany's EnBW, Finland's Helen, and US cooperative-software firm NISC. The problems Emulate solves are the ones utilities feel most acutely today - peak demand that forces expensive grid upgrades, renewable intermittency that threatens stability, and customers who want lower bills without complexity.

The founding technology traces to a co-founder's postdoc at MIT; the go-to-market promise is that a utility need not understand any of it to run a program by tomorrow.

The Model

Software fees, plus a slice of the flexibility

Emulate operates a B2B - or more precisely B2B2C - software model. It licenses its white-label platform to utilities and retailers, who deploy it to their own residential base. Revenue comes from two directions: software licensing, and a share of the flexibility-market value the platform unlocks across ancillary, intraday, imbalance and grid-service programs. As a utility's fleet of connected homes grows, so does the pool of flexibility Emulate can stack across markets - aligning the company's upside with its customers' rather than against them.

The team behind it is small and deliberately deep. Roughly 34 people combine PhDs in control theory, AI and embedded systems with commercial leaders drawn from utilities such as E.ON and from Fortune 200 firms. The company keeps a foot on each continent: an engineering-anchored headquarters in Lund's Ideon Science Park and a commercial base in the Boston area, where CEO Shwan Lamei is based.
