Connor Rouan Is Turning the Ceiling Into an Energy Dashboard

The SiteWorx CEO learned the business from installation sites upward. Now he is betting that the most useful climate technology may be the kind a facility manager can see, measure and switch off.

The unoccupied aisle does not complain. Its lights keep burning, the air keeps moving, and somewhere a meter keeps counting. Weeks later, the cost appears on a utility bill, flattened into a number that says little about the hour, the machine or the empty square footage responsible. Connor Rouan has built his career around shrinking that distance between waste and recognition. At SiteWorx, the industrial energy-control company he now leads, a building becomes something closer to a live instrument: sensors observe it, software interprets it, and controls respond while there is still time to matter.

Rouan did not enter this world through climate slogans or a management title. He came in through integration work while studying at Northeastern University. He learned the product beside customers and resellers, then moved to the manufacturer's side before graduation. The work was concrete. A device had to join a network. A control had to behave correctly. A customer had to trust the result. His formal training - a bachelor's degree in computer engineering and a master's in engineering management - gave him two useful languages. One described the system. The other described the organization required to deliver it.

01 / Field workThe installation site was the classroom

There is a fashionable route through technology in which strategy comes first and physical reality arrives later. Rouan's sequence ran in the opposite direction. Application engineering placed him where a promise made by sales met the peculiar facts of a real facility. Industrial buildings are full of those facts: old fixtures, heavy equipment, radio interference, changing layouts, production schedules and people who cannot pause the operation because a dashboard needs attention.

That experience followed him upward. He moved through design engineering, sales engineering, application engineering leadership and commercial operations. The titles changed, but the translation problem stayed put. The people writing software, the partners installing hardware and the operators paying the energy bill all needed to agree on what success looked like. For Rouan, commercial work was not an escape from engineering. It was engineering with more parties in the loop.

The revealing word is practical. SiteWorx's proposition begins with a simple observation: large buildings contain many systems that consume resources without knowing whether anyone needs them. Occupancy sensors can tell lighting when an aisle is empty. The same signal can help an HVAC system stop conditioning unused space. Power meters can reveal loads that linger after a shift. Temperature, humidity and flow sensors can warn operators when conditions drift. The cloud layer collects the evidence, but the useful moment comes when evidence turns into action.

02 / The product's long tripWhat survived the ownership carousel

Rouan's rise also unfolded inside a product with a complicated corporate biography. SiteWorx came out of Digital Lumens, a Boston industrial lighting company founded in 2008. By 2017, when OSRAM agreed to acquire Digital Lumens, the platform had more than 2,500 installations. The attraction was already larger than lamps. Connected fixtures created an overhead network for sensors, environmental measurements and industrial applications. Lighting supplied the beachhead; data widened the map.

Then came several changes of owner and structure. Digital Lumens assets moved out of the OSRAM orbit. In February 2023, a new SiteWorx Software entity announced that it owned the software suite, brands, service contracts, trademarks and related assets. Eight months later, a core group of employees acquired majority ownership and operating control of the American business. The people who had spent years writing the code, supporting sites and serving resellers were no longer merely preserving a product through somebody else's transaction. They were responsible for the company.

Veteran employees took majority control in October 2023. Rouan became COO, with responsibility centered on commercial operations, reseller relationships and customers.

Rouan's statement at the time was candid about the process. Months of negotiations and hidden labor had preceded the announcement. His attention then turned outward: establish and re-establish relationships with the reseller network, deliver the products customers needed and help facilities reach energy-reduction targets. It was less a victory lap than a service schedule.

Rob Winchester, a longtime software leader, became CEO during the transition while Rouan served as COO. SiteWorx now lists Winchester as an adviser and software contributor, and Rouan as chief executive. The succession reads as another act of continuity. Rouan had accumulated a decade of context across the customer, engineering and commercial sides of the same product. The person asked to lead the business had already seen where its abstractions met concrete.

03 / The wider apertureFrom smarter lights to legible buildings

SiteWorx today presents a broader industrial energy-management platform. Its categories form a memorable industrial checklist: water, air, gas and electricity. The software can gather readings into one view, raise alarms when conditions move outside a safe range, and connect through APIs to existing building, maintenance and reporting systems. Hardware sits on the physical infrastructure. A wireless mesh moves signals to gateways. Software turns the result into controls, comparisons and claimed savings that operators can inspect.

This matters because industrial efficiency is often a visibility problem before it is a machinery problem. A facility may own efficient equipment and still waste energy through timing, settings and blind spots. Rouan has spent his career on that seam. The best intervention may be a new sensor on an old load. The most persuasive climate argument may be a line on a savings dashboard that a plant manager can match to an operational change.

The ceiling is a clever place to begin. It reaches nearly every occupied zone. Lighting fixtures have power. Their position gives sensors a clear view of movement below. Once a network exists overhead, the question changes from “How should we control these lights?” to “What else should this building know?” SiteWorx has answered with environmental sensors, utility metering, equipment alerts and controls that can work alongside the systems a facility already uses.

04 / A life in motionThe operator who keeps moving

Rouan's public life outside the company has its own recurring pattern: teams and motion. At Northeastern, he played men's squash, served as club president and helped organize its first alumni event. The 2016 gathering brought 24 current and former members together. Earlier that year, he won his match in straight games as Northeastern captured a national divisional championship. By his senior season, reports still found him in five-game contests, including one decided by a 13-11 tiebreaker.

His current company biography compresses his Bay Area leisure into a lively list: running, skiing, surfing, biking and hiking. Local running-club records place him not only in race results but among volunteers. Caracole, a Cincinnati community organization, recognized him and several others with a 2023 volunteerism award for years of service and hands-on work assembling kits. These details do not offer a management formula. They do show someone repeatedly joining the activity rather than admiring it from the edge.

The early signal was there before college. Rouan received a national young entrepreneur award in 2014, after starting a company as a high school student. At Northeastern he later returned as a speaker for graduates of the Galante Engineering Business Program. The path between those moments was not a straight founder narrative. It was an apprenticeship inside someone else's technology, followed by the rare chance to help employees take responsibility for it.

Rouan's stated aspiration is modest in wording and large in surface area: practical solutions with real environmental impact. That choice avoids asking facility teams to believe in a distant transformation. It asks them to inspect what happened last night. Which loads ran? Which spaces were empty? Where did a temperature drift? How much did an automated response avoid? The climate story is present, but the daily vocabulary is uptime, cost and control.

This is the useful tension in his work. SiteWorx sells cloud software, yet its credibility lives in physical places. It speaks in dashboards, but the outcome is a motor slowing down, a bank of lights dimming or an alert reaching the right person. Rouan is an executive, but his authority was accumulated through implementation. Even the employee buyout, dramatic on paper, ultimately had to resolve into shipments, relationships and answered support calls.

A building wastes quietly. Rouan's bet is that it can also explain itself. Give the facility enough senses, connect those senses to controls, and make the result legible to the people who run it. The ceiling becomes more than a place to hang a light. It becomes the beginning of a conversation between the physical operation and the software watching over it - a conversation measured in fewer surprises, lower bills and resources no longer spent on empty air.
