The instruction arrived by way of Hollywood. Bob Pragada’s mother had seen An Officer and a Gentleman, the 1982 film in which naval ambition comes with an exceptionally good wardrobe. She suggested Annapolis. When her son asked why, her explanation was wonderfully economical: “The uniforms!” He went to a Chicago library to investigate the Naval Academy. A parent’s enthusiasm had become a research assignment.
Decades later, Pragada is chair and chief executive officer of Jacobs, with a working life that has taken him through naval engineering, presidential facilities, industrial services and global operations. The scale has changed considerably since that library visit. The practical question running through the story is remarkably consistent: how do you get a group of people, and the systems they depend on, to work together?
A film, a library, a commission
Pragada entered the Naval Academy in 1986 and graduated in 1990. Rugby, classrooms and military training made teamwork an everyday requirement. He has recalled the significance of being an Indian American at the academy, and of later recognizing that his own attendance could help other young people imagine themselves there. A choice that began within one family acquired a meaning beyond it.
His family’s American story had already involved engineering. His father came from India and worked at NASA; Pragada was born in Titusville, Florida. In his account of growing up, his mother’s determination and her interest in the service academies occupy a central place. Annapolis became a concrete destination, something to prepare for through school and sport.

The machinery behind the occasion
He served in the Navy from 1990 to 1999, reaching lieutenant commander. His work in the Civil Engineer Corps put engineering inside a service organization. The Navy also sent him to Stanford, where he earned a master’s degree in engineering and management. He remembers studying there in the mid-1990s, as the early internet was opening possibilities outside the military.
One assignment placed him at Camp David as facilities director during the Clinton administration. Presidential retreats have a public life of photographs, meetings and arrivals. Someone also has to keep the place functioning. For an engineer, the setting changes the stakes and the audience, while leaving the obligation to deliver firmly in place.
There was a personal connection, too. During his posting, Pragada met Senator Ted Kennedy and explained his family’s link to a program sponsored by John F. Kennedy. An official encounter briefly connected the history of an immigrant family with the family whose name it had carried across an ocean.
After the Navy came industrial operations. At Kinetics, he served as chief operating officer of a business supplying process solutions for semiconductor manufacturing. The chip industry was part of his working life well before AI data centers became a regular subject of his television appearances.
That continuity helps explain his current vocabulary. He can discuss a technological shift through facilities, operations and delivery because those have been his assignments. The product attracting attention may change quickly. The task of assembling the capabilities behind it remains demanding work.
Leaving, then coming back with a different brief
Pragada first joined Jacobs in 2006. His responsibilities crossed field services, regional management and global sales. These jobs offer different views of the same enterprise: what clients want, what teams can deliver, and how the organization connects the two. His route to the top passed through several of those views.
In August 2014, he left to become president and CEO of the Brock Group, the industrial specialty services company. Its work included the practical business of maintaining and supporting industrial facilities. The appointment gave him responsibility for a company outside Jacobs, before Jacobs became his company to lead.
At Brock, he was already talking about a constraint that technology announcements often leave in small print: people with the skills to do the work. In 2014, he argued that construction needed to attract newcomers with a prospect of sustained development and a career. Recruiting for an immediate opening alone would leave the longer problem unresolved.
He returned to Jacobs in 2016. The following year brought CH2M, an acquisition with substantial water, infrastructure and environmental expertise. Pragada led its integration. By November 2019, he was president and chief operating officer, with oversight of global operations. The brief had grown from managing parts of the company to coordinating the whole.
When Jacobs announced the succession from Steve Demetriou, it pointed to Pragada’s operating record and his role in executing strategy. He became CEO on January 24, 2023. The title followed years of responsibility for the business underneath it.

A company redraws its boundaries
His promotion also coincided with a consequential revision of what Jacobs would contain. In September 2024, its Critical Mission Solutions and Cyber and Intelligence businesses combined with Amentum. Demetriou became executive chair of Amentum. Pragada added the Jacobs chair position, becoming the fourth person to hold it in the company’s history.
Separating businesses is a different management exercise from adding them. People, client relationships and operating structures have to find their place on either side of a corporate boundary. The announcement can be expressed in a sentence. Making the resulting organizations function is a much larger assignment.
The remaining Jacobs placed greater emphasis on infrastructure and advanced facilities, alongside consulting. The company’s activities still covered a considerable range, from transportation and water to complex manufacturing. Its new boundaries gave Pragada a clearer framework for explaining which combinations of capabilities Jacobs wanted to bring to clients.
His connections extend beyond the company. He has served on Eaton’s board since 2021 and sits on the boards of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and Dallas Regional Chamber. In September 2024, the U.S.-India Business Council named him a Global Leadership Award recipient, recognizing his contribution to commercial ties between the two countries.
The cloud comes down to earth
Listen to Pragada discuss AI infrastructure and the conversation soon reaches things you can touch. In his September 2025 appearance with Jim Cramer, he talked about power, cooling, water and digital twins. The technology story moved beyond computing equipment to the facilities and utilities that allow that equipment to perform.
By March 2026, he was describing Jacobs’ involvement across chip manufacturing, utility infrastructure and data centers, including its place in NVIDIA’s partner ecosystem. In May, speaking with Liz Claman, he again emphasized the connections across those activities. His argument for Jacobs rests on the breadth of the engineering problem.
There is an appealing reality check in that view. The cloud sounds light. Its physical requirements are rather less airy. Plans for additional computing capacity bring questions about sites, electrical supply, cooling and the coordination of specialized teams. Digital ambition arrives with an extensive list of practical appointments.
For Pragada, that creates a commercial opening grounded in familiar work. A company with experience across manufacturing, energy and water can bring several disciplines to the same client problem. Whether that combination succeeds depends on how effectively the disciplines work together. Breadth creates an opportunity for coordination, along with the responsibility to make it useful.
Fewer handoffs, more responsibility
PA Consulting adds another part of that proposition. Jacobs first invested in the consultancy in March 2021. On March 20, 2026, it completed the purchase of the remaining equity, announcing the transaction three days later. Upfront consideration was approximately £1.2 billion, or about $1.6 billion.
“Clients increasingly seek fewer interfaces and greater accountability”

The idea is to bring strategy, digital innovation and engineering delivery closer together. A client facing a complicated capital program needs more than an answer about what to do. It also needs a workable route through design, technology and execution. Pragada’s case is that Jacobs and PA can help cover more of that journey together.
It is an intelligible promise, and one that places a burden on management. Buying the remaining shares establishes ownership. Delivering a more connected service requires the people inside the business to make the connection real. His operating background will be relevant to that work long after the transaction announcement has passed.
The work waiting behind the number
In August 2026, Jacobs reported a $28.9 billion backlog for its fiscal third quarter, up 27.3 percent from a year earlier. It also raised its fiscal-year guidance for the third consecutive quarter. Backlog describes work ahead. For the person leading the company, it also describes commitments that teams will have to fulfill.

Pragada’s public remarks about mentorship return to his academy years and the habits of discipline, adaptability and teamwork. When he spoke to Naval Academy audiences in 2023, he stressed the value of sharing experience between military and private-sector leaders. The connection to Annapolis has survived the change in his job description.
At home, there are less formal exchanges of expertise. His sons have influenced his taste in rap. A chief executive can manage a global organization and still receive cultural instruction from the next generation. His uncle’s advice supplies a compact rule for the larger business: “forever be humble, but always with confidence.”
That balance is a reasonable place to leave him. Pragada has helped change the shape of Jacobs and now has to make its connected capabilities work for clients. The ambition is visible in the transactions and the markets he discusses. The test will arrive through the efforts of many people, doing the practical work his career keeps returning to.
