The story of Austin Air Systems starts with a man watching his wife breathe. Richard Taylor noticed that Joyce, who had struggled with respiratory illness her whole life, always seemed to do better in a hospital room. Medications had not fixed it. Diet had not fixed it. But something about that clean, filtered hospital air did. So in 1990, in a leased space on Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York, Taylor - a former music-club owner with no background in filtration - set out to bottle that hospital-room feeling and put it in the corner of his own bedroom.

Austin Air is a manufacturer, first and last. Its catalog is small on purpose. The flagship HealthMate is the direct descendant of Taylor's first unit. Who buys a steel box of clean air

The customer list runs in two directions. On one side are individuals: allergy and asthma sufferers, people with chemical sensitivities, families in wildfire zones, and anyone who has ever Googled what mold does to a house. On the other side are institutions - schools, hospitals running clinical research, and government agencies buying for emergencies.
