Valkyrae

She left YouTube exclusivity on the same date she started streaming. January 8, 2025 - tenth anniversary, thirty-third birthday, return to Twitch. The math is too tidy to be accidental.

A streamer who decided streaming was the warm-up.

Rachell Hofstetter, who answers to Rae and goes by Valkyrae in lobbies and box offices, sits on the ownership group of a $190 million esports house and runs an anime-leaning studio out of Los Angeles. The day job is still going live at midnight to play a silly game with friends. The portfolio behind it is no longer cute.

Her week looks like this in 2026: stream three or four nights, record Wine About It with QTCinderella, take a Hihi Studios meeting about a webtoon called Bad Influence, sign off on a 100 Thieves apparel drop, sleep four hours, repeat. She has never pretended this is sustainable. She has also never slowed down.

The arc is easy to misread because the framing has shifted three times. In 2018 she was the first female content creator at 100 Thieves, a sentence that aged into a footnote three years later when she joined the ownership group alongside Drake, Scooter Braun, and Dan Gilbert. In 2020 she was the Among Us streamer who put Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a lobby with Lil Nas X. In 2024 she became a studio founder. Pick a year, get a different Valkyrae.

Strip the awards and she is still the kid from Moses Lake, Washington, who watched her mother encourage her gaming habit and who took an associate's degree from community college before clocking in at GameStop. The pseudonym fuses Valkyrie and Rae. She picked it on Twitch in 2015. Twitch is also where she is again, having spent five years on a YouTube exclusive deal that produced a Game Award, three Streamy nominations, and the kind of growth that bends graphs.

The Among Us miracle

Late 2020 was the inflection point and nobody saw it coming, including her. Her first three months on YouTube averaged 1,500 concurrent viewers. Then a six-year-old social deduction game caught fire. By autumn she was peaking past 100,000 concurrent. Disguised Toast, Sykkuno, Corpse Husband, Pokimane, and Valkyrae built a recurring cast that pulled in PewDiePie one week and a sitting US congresswoman the next. By December the Game Awards handed her Content Creator of the Year. Twelve months earlier she had been a Twitch mid-tier. Twelve months later she would be a co-owner of the org that signed her.

The Among Us run mattered for a reason streamers rarely admit on stream: it proved that warmth scales. Valkyrae's lobbies were not technically remarkable. They were friendly, anxious, easily flustered, and shaped like a hangout. Gen Z viewers parked themselves there and would not leave. The lesson, which she has been compounding ever since, is that the product was always the room, not the game.

The RFLCT week

October 2021 went sideways. Valkyrae launched RFLCT, a skincare line aimed at gamers, with a marketing claim that blue light from screens damaged skin. Yale dermatology disagreed loudly. Within two weeks the brand was shuttered. She went live, apologized, and said the criticism was warranted and valid. The episode is the only commercial setback on the resume and it became, paradoxically, a credibility moment. She did not litigate. She did not lawyer up. She owned it on camera, said she was contractually bound but no longer wanted to be associated with the product, and waited. The audience came back larger.

100 Thieves, the chip

On April 7, 2021, six months after the Among Us boom, 100 Thieves added Valkyrae and CouRageJD to the ownership group. The company had just raised at a $190 million valuation. She had been at the org as a creator since 2018. The promotion read as recognition. The cap-table impact reads better in 2026: she is now a partner in one of the most-watched gaming brands on the planet, with a hand in apparel drops, content strategy, and the org's relationship with Drake's camp.

Hihi Studios and the second act

In September 2024 she filed papers for Hihi Studios, a media company aimed at developing graphic novels, TV, and film with anime-inspired sensibilities. The first announced project, in June 2025, is a webtoon called Bad Influence. The pitch is more revealing than the title. Hihi is not a creator-led merch shop. It is an IP company. The bet, if you read it correctly, is that the next streaming-adjacent fortunes will be made by people who own the characters, not the channels. Valkyrae intends to be one of them.

Sis-A-Thon and the IRL pivot

February 24, 2025: Valkyrae and Brittany "Cinna" Watts started a week-long IRL streaming marathon in Los Angeles. They called it Sis-A-Thon. It was supposed to start in January but the Southern California wildfires pushed it. The streams included rollerblading, late-night food, and a stalker incident on the last night at Pacific Park on Santa Monica Pier - a reminder that the format has costs the platforms still do not fully absorb. Sis-A-Thon 2 ran in November. The franchise is now a thing.

Voice work, cameos, the other reel

The voice acting did not start as a vanity hobby. She appeared in music videos for Machine Gun Kelly ("DayWalker") and Bella Poarch ("Build a Bitch," "Inferno") in 2021. In 2022 she voiced a Hannya Squad member in the English dub of Tribe Nine and Squad Commander Red in Netflix's Sonic Prime. In January 2025 she voiced Ratchet, the lead in animated feature Goldbeak. She filmed a thirty-second cameo for A Minecraft Movie in April 2025 that the editors cut for time. The pattern: she takes work that the streaming audience would not necessarily reward but that the next career obviously requires.

The room she sits in

From April 2023 to July 2024 Valkyrae lived with three other streamers - Fuslie, Kkatamina, and TinaKitten - in a household nicknamed "The Roomies." It became a content engine, a stabilizer, and, occasionally, a soap opera. The roommate era ended quietly. Wine About It, the podcast she joined as co-host in July 2025 alongside QTCinderella, is the next iteration of the same idea: build the room, broadcast from it, do not pretend it is a set.

What she keeps doing right

The discipline you can extract from a decade of receipts: she ships, she apologizes when wrong, she does not retreat from a category after a loss, she keeps her circle small, and she lets the work compound. The Forbes 30 Under 30 nod in 2022 and the Sapphire Award at the Streamer Awards in 2024 are the kind of credentials that look like the past. They are not. They are the foundation under whatever Hihi Studios becomes.

"All of the hate, doubt, concerns, and criticisms are all warranted and valid."- Valkyrae, on the RFLCT skincare launch, October 2021

The line is unusual for the era. Most creators in 2021 reached for the lawyers. Valkyrae went live, said the obvious thing, and absorbed the bruise. Two weeks later RFLCT was shut down. Four years later it is the only entry in the bad-decision column, and even that one is footnoted: she said the company would not publish its blue light research and that she was contractually bound but ready to step away.
