The Dispatch

The bottleneck nobody photographs

Australia's clean-energy story is usually told in turbines and solar panels - the photogenic hardware of a transition. Symphony Infrastructure Partners works one step down the chain, on the part that rarely makes the brochure: the substations, switchyards and transmission lines that actually connect a renewable project to the grid.

Founded in Sydney in 2022 by Steve Butler, Symphony develops, delivers, owns and operates high-voltage grid-connection infrastructure. A wind farm can have the land, the turbines and the capital and still stall for years waiting on a connection. Symphony exists to remove that single point of failure, and it has built the business around a plain promise printed across its website: grid connection, delivered with certainty.

It is a business-to-business company. Its clients are not households but the developers of wind, solar and battery projects, the operators of data centres and AI factories, and the gas, mining and industrial firms that need dependable high-voltage links to the network.

The scale is already substantial for a company only a few years old. Symphony reports having managed more than 11.7 gigawatts of connections, commissioned over 7.4 gigawatts, delivered upward of 100 high-voltage substations and constructed more than 5,000 kilometres of powerlines - work carried out by an in-house national workforce of over 1,300 people.

That last number is the tell. Where many infrastructure firms sub-contract the specialist trades, Symphony insources them. The logic is simple: on a grid connection, every hand-off between separate contractors is a place where the schedule can slip. Own the whole chain and you can stand behind the word "certainty."

"We found strong alignment with Blackstone on understanding the scale, complexity and opportunity of the energy transition."

Products & Services

Every step of the connection, under one roof

Symphony's offer is a single integrated lifecycle. Rather than selling one stage and handing the rest to others, it covers the connection from first strategy sketch to decades of operation.

01

Concept & Grid Strategy

Connection scoping and grid strategy planning that give a project a clear, de-risked path to the network.

02

Engineering & Design

High-voltage engineering and design for switchyards, substations and transmission lines.

03

HV Construction

Construction of switchyards, substations and transmission lines delivered by a 1,300+ in-house team.

04

Testing & Commissioning

Systematic testing and commissioning to bring connection assets safely online.

05

Operations & Maintenance

Ongoing O&M and lifecycle management once the connection is energised.

06

Asset Ownership

Long-term ownership of connection assets, letting clients move capital and risk off their balance sheet.

The Business Model

Three ways to partner

Symphony earns across development, construction, operations and long-term ownership. Clients pick how much of the chain they want it to carry.

Model 01

Development Partnership

Full lifecycle - Symphony develops, funds, builds, owns and operates the connection so the client can focus on generation.

Model 02

Delivery Partnership

Design through operations - Symphony engineers, constructs, commissions and runs the asset while the client retains ownership.

Model 03

EPC + Operations

A hybrid engineering-procurement-construction plus operations arrangement for clients wanting a defined delivery scope.

The Founder

A second infrastructure act

Steve Butler had built independent infrastructure once before. He founded Stilmark and grew it into Australia's leading independent mobile-network tower developer and owner. In 2022, after Stilmark acquired Vodafone Australia's national tower portfolio, OMERS Infrastructure bought the business and rebranded the combined assets "WaveConn."

Symphony applies the same instinct - independent, own-and-operate infrastructure - to a bigger and messier canvas: the electricity grid. The pattern that worked for towers, Butler is betting, works for connections.

"Australia is at the beginning of its energy transition journey, and we couldn't be more excited to partner with Symphony."

The Money

Inside the A$488M Series A

In 2024 Symphony closed one of Australia's larger energy-transition platform raises. The structure paired equity from Blackstone with senior debt from Commonwealth Bank, funding a series of five acquisitions to assemble an integrated platform.

Where It Fits

Vertical integration, back in fashion

The Australian market for high-voltage delivery is crowded with capable engineering and construction contractors and transmission specialists. Symphony's wager is that clients increasingly want fewer of them, not more - one accountable partner across the whole connection rather than a relay of sub-contracts.

Its differentiator is therefore structural rather than technical: it will own and operate the asset it builds, absorbing capital and risk that a traditional contractor hands back to the client at practical completion. That model reads as a bet that certainty and balance-sheet relief are worth paying for.

The timing tracks a national ambition. Australia has set out to become a renewable-energy "superpower," and every gigawatt of that plan depends on connection infrastructure that is currently a constraint. Rising demand from data centres and AI factories only tightens the competition for grid capacity.

That is the space Symphony has claimed: the picks-and-shovels layer beneath the transition, connecting both the new clean generation and the heavy digital loads that will consume it. It is why an investor like Blackstone - which has framed energy transition as a multi-decade, roughly US$100 billion opportunity - wrote the cheque.

Questions

The quick briefing

What does Symphony Infrastructure Partners do?

It develops, delivers, owns and operates high-voltage grid-connection infrastructure - substations, switchyards and transmission lines - that links renewable energy, storage and data-centre projects to Australia's electricity grid.

Who founded Symphony and when?

It was founded in 2022 by Steve Butler, who previously built Stilmark into Australia's leading independent mobile-tower company, later rebranded WaveConn after OMERS Infrastructure acquired it.

How much funding has Symphony raised?

Symphony raised a A$488 million Series A in 2024 - A$300 million in equity led by Blackstone and a A$188 million senior debt facility from Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Who are Symphony's customers?
