Everyone is racing to get to space. Stef Crum is building the trip home.

A Georgia Tech PhD turned founder, Crum bet Reditus Space on the least glamorous part of the mission: coming back. The result is a fridge-sized capsule that survives Mach 29 and flies again.

Most people building space companies are obsessed with one direction: up. Bigger rockets, cheaper launches, more mass to orbit. Stef Crum looked at the same industry and became fixated on the opposite arrow. Getting to space, he decided, was basically a solved problem. The hard, unsexy, actually-valuable part was getting back down in one piece - and doing it cheaply enough to do again next month.

That inversion is the whole thesis of Reditus Space, the Atlanta startup Crum runs as CEO and co-founder. And it has carried him a long way in a short time: a Georgia Tech PhD, a spot in Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, a $7.1 million seed round, a place on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Transportation and Aerospace, and, as of July 2026, a finished spacecraft sitting in a hangar waiting for a Falcon 9.

01 / THE IDEAA factory in orbit needs a way home

The pitch takes a minute to sink in, because it starts with a fact most people don't know: some materials simply come out better in space. In microgravity there's no sedimentation and no convection, so mixtures don't settle and separate the way they do on Earth. Crystals grow more uniformly. Drugs, biologics, and semiconductor substrates can form at a level of atomic homogeneity that's impossible under gravity's thumb.

The catch has never been making the stuff up there. It's getting it back. For decades, returning anything from orbit meant relying on the International Space Station - expensive, slow, scheduled years out, and wrapped in bureaucracy. If microgravity manufacturing was ever going to become a real industry, someone had to build a reliable, repeatable ride home. Crum's word for the old model is a bottleneck he thinks has finally broken.

Reditus's answer is a spacecraft called ENOS. Crum describes it, disarmingly, as roughly the size of a small family fridge - about 200 kilograms. It launches on a rideshare, operates in orbit for around two months hosting customer payloads, then reenters at something close to Mach 29 and parachutes down for recovery off the coast of Florida. The design goal that makes the economics work: more than 80 percent of the vehicle's mass comes back intact, ready to fly again.

02 / THE ORIGINFrom cis-lunar math to a company

Crum did not arrive at re-entry by accident. His PhD research at Georgia Tech was in cis-lunar orbit determination - the deeply technical work of figuring out where objects are in the vast space between Earth and the Moon, and how to move them around efficiently. He'd also done hypersonics research with the Georgia Tech Research Institute and worked on satellite missions and reentry projects with NASA and the U.S. Space Force. Before all of that, he'd founded Da Vinci Satellite, a satellite mission nonprofit.

The company itself came together with Will Sherman, a fellow aerospace PhD student who would become Reditus's CTO. The two sketched the concept during graduate research, pushed it through Georgia Tech's Create-X accelerator, and officially launched Reditus in October 2024. Sherman committed hard enough to drop out of the PhD program to build it full-time. Crum finished his - earning his master's and doctorate in 2025 - and walked straight from the lab into running a venture-backed company.

There's a small tell in the name of the spacecraft. Enos was the chimpanzee NASA launched into orbit in 1961 and, crucially, brought safely home. For a company whose entire reason to exist is the return trip, naming the vehicle after a famous survivor of re-entry is either a nice coincidence or a very on-brand choice.

03 / THE PLACEA space company in Atlanta, on purpose

Crum could have set up in Los Angeles or Houston with everyone else. He stayed in Atlanta and made an argument out of it. The city, he points out, sits on a large aerospace base - it's the space slice of that industry he thinks is missing.

Building there is partly a bet that talent and cost lean in his favor, and partly a bet on being early to a place before it's obvious. The Reditus team already pulls engineers from SpaceX, Blue Origin, JPL, and the Department of Defense, which suggests the pitch works well enough to relocate people to Georgia.

04 / THE TWISTOne capsule, two very different customers

Here's where the business gets more durable than a single market would allow. The same vehicle that ferries a pharmaceutical R&D payload to orbit can, with a change of mission, play the villain in a defense exercise. Because ENOS comes screaming back through the atmosphere at hypersonic speed, it doubles as a Mach 25-plus target vehicle - something the Department of Defense needs to test missile interceptors against, both above and inside the atmosphere.

That's not theoretical. Reditus was added to the Missile Defense Agency's SHIELD contracting pool in December 2025, picked up a Navy technology-transfer grant for hypersonic modeling, and has had discussions with the Air Force Research Laboratory. Crum frames the defense conversations plainly - detection first, he says, and eventually kinetic engagement.

It's a smart way for a hardware company to survive its own timelines. Building spacecraft is slow and capital-hungry; having a second customer with deep pockets and urgent needs buys the runway to keep iterating on the first.

05 / THE OPERATOR“Just try and do things”

Ask Crum for advice and you get something closer to a shrug than a manifesto. His guidance to undergraduates is four words with a caveat attached, and it reads like the operating system behind a two-year sprint from research idea to finished spacecraft.

That temperament shows up in how Reditus talks about itself - three flat principles of precision, iteration, and innovation, more workshop than mission statement. The company describes what it's chasing as, in Crum's words, genuinely world-changing technologies: purer drugs, better semiconductor substrates, medical treatments that can only be produced where gravity isn't in the way. The unglamorous middle step, the part he owns, is making sure all of it can get back to a lab on the ground.

For now the whole thesis waits on one launch. ENOS is built. The manifest is real. And a founder who decided the interesting arrow points down is about to find out, at roughly Mach 29, whether he was right.
