PMK Entertainment and the Name That Came Back From the Dead

When a famous Hollywood publicity firm lost its place in a corporate merger, its people did not scatter. They picked up the relationships, revived an old name, and moved the whole conversation to a new room.

There is a peculiar kind of immortality available to a Hollywood publicity agency. The company can be acquired, merged, renamed and finally removed from the organization chart. Yet if the publicists still know whom to call, and the clients still take their calls, the useful part of the firm remains alive. In November 2025, that abstraction acquired an old three-letter name: PMK.

PMK Entertainment was launched inside Michael Nyman's Acceleration Community of Companies, or ACC, after R&CPMK was dissolved during the combination of its parent, Interpublic Group, with Omnicom. Cindi Berger, the longtime R&CPMK leader, became chief executive. Alan Nierob became president. A large group of former colleagues and clients crossed with them into ACC's network. The press release described a new agency. The roster made it feel more like a very organized change of address.

The thing that moved was trust

The easiest mistake is to read this as a branding story. It is really a logistics story about trust. Publicists sell judgment under time pressure: whether to answer, what to say, who should say it, which invitation matters and which apparent emergency can wait until morning. That judgment lives in people, not a trademark.

PMK's launch roster made the point. Publicly named clients included Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Billie Jean King, Jerry Bruckheimer and institutions such as The Grammy Awards, Tribeca Festival and The Paley Center. This is not one customer type. It is a collection of people and organizations for whom public attention is both an asset and a hazard.

Five services, one scarce commodity

The firm's menu runs from talent representation and entertainment publicity to strategic communications, crisis counsel, event strategy and brand partnerships. The categories sound broad because the underlying problem is broad: attention arrives in several forms, at inconvenient speeds, with consequences that rarely stay in one channel.

Talent

Build a public profile over years, not merely around opening weekend.

Strategy

Shape executive visibility, reputation, awards and media narratives.

Entertainment PR

Launch film, television, streaming, theatre, music and live work.

Events

Run premieres, festivals, fundraisers and awards-season rooms.

Partnerships

Connect brands and talent through endorsements, integrations and collaborations.

Crisis

Make decisions when the stakes rise and the margin for error contracts.

Competitors can offer similar lists. The Lede Company, 42West, Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis, align and Rogers & Cowan all operate in overlapping territory. PMK's distinction is not a secret tool. It is the combination of veteran entertainment specialists with ACC's broader network of advisory, data, creative and communications firms. The pitch is intimacy with scale nearby, rather than scale sitting on top of the client.

A failure on the org chart

What failed first was not the publicity work. It was the corporate container. R&CPMK had been created in 2019 by combining two large entertainment agencies already owned by IPG. By 2025, as IPG was being folded into Omnicom, reporting indicated that the combined agency no longer had a place in the new structure. The R&CPMK name was sunset. Parts of the operation were sent elsewhere.

That changed Berger's options. She reached out to Nyman, her former PMK*BNC partner and the founder of ACC. The response was remarkably fast: PMK Entertainment took the talent and entertainment-publicity focus; other colleagues joined ACC Advisory and DKC. Los Angeles Business Journal later reported that the move went from phone call to action quickly. What might have become a dispersal became a recombination.

What did the maneuver cost? There is no public price. No acquisition value, funding round or valuation was announced. That absence matters. This was presented less like a purchase of hard assets and more like the movement of professionals and accounts into a new network. The valuable inventory was continuity.

Why the old initials still work

PMK reaches back to around 1980, when Pat Kingsley's Pickwick PR merged with Maslansky/Koenigsberg. The name later became PMK*BNC, then entered the Rogers & Cowan combination, then shrank inside the abbreviation R&CPMK. Reviving it in 2025 was a compact explanation: new entity, familiar lineage.

Berger herself supplies the bridge. She began at PMK as a receptionist and eventually ran the agency. Nierob started at Rogers & Cowan as an assistant in 1979. Between them sits the kind of institutional memory that cannot be recreated with a rebrand workshop. Berger's often-repeated advice is equally unfashionable and useful: if you mess up, fess up. In a trade associated with spin, blunt truth becomes a positioning device.

The portable part

  1. Name the asset that survives the structure. At PMK, it was trusted judgment and client relationships.
  2. Move before uncertainty becomes drift. The new home was arranged quickly enough to preserve continuity.
  3. Use history as shorthand, not decoration. The revived name explained the transition in three letters.
  4. Join a network that fills gaps. ACC adds adjacent strategy, data and communications capabilities.

This play is not universally portable. It depends on clients whose loyalty is anchored in specific advisers, leaders with enough credibility to hold a group together, and a new parent willing to preserve specialist autonomy. It is weaker in businesses where contracts cannot move, the product is capital-intensive, or the departing brand owns the trust more completely than its people do.

But in entertainment publicity, the firm often sits in the background by design. Its best work makes somebody else look prepared, timely and inevitable. PMK Entertainment's first campaign was therefore its own formation. It converted corporate displacement into continuity, an obsolete abbreviation into a signal, and a potentially awkward question - “what happens now?” - into an answer clients could recognize.
