A fragmented database has something in common with a difficult negotiation. Each side may be accurate on its own terms. Trouble begins when the names, definitions and assumptions fail to line up. Jonathan Stambolis has spent his career in that gap. He worked first with contracts, then with diplomats, then with institutions trying to make sense of scattered information. Zenysis, the software company he co-founded in 2015, is the most visible expression of a skill he had been rehearsing for years: getting incompatible systems to produce a shared picture.
His route there does not read like a conventional founder biography. Stambolis studied economics and law at Macquarie University, practiced corporate law in Sydney and became a senior associate at Clayton Utz. Alongside the legal work, he co-founded PodProperty, a service designed for people buying property together. It translated a knot of ownership rules and agreements into something customers could actually use.
That early venture matters because it shows the pattern before the larger company arrived. Stambolis was not chasing software as an identity. He was interested in the infrastructure around a consequential decision: who owns what, which obligations belong to whom, and how a complex arrangement becomes legible enough for ordinary people to enter it.
A deliberate turn toward the world
In 2009, Stambolis returned to study, completing a master’s in international relations and international law at the University of New South Wales. He finished first in his cohort. The decision was a clean break from a promising legal track, but not from the habits law had taught him. International institutions also run on language, incentives and carefully negotiated definitions. The room was larger. The method remained recognizable.
His postgraduate study led to the Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York. A later Australian Senate account named Stambolis among five unpaid interns who worked at the mission, covered their own rent and travel, and performed at what the senator described as an extraordinarily high level. It is an unusually concrete detail in an otherwise polished résumé. International careers can be made to look inevitable after the fact. This one included a self-funded bet.
Stambolis went on to advise Australia’s Permanent Representative, work on international negotiations and serve as Manager of Public Diplomacy during Australia’s successful campaign for a UN Security Council seat. He later advised in the Executive Office of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The work required a feel for both the formal mechanism and the human map around it: what the document says, who needs to agree, and which disagreement is actually blocking progress.

The passport line is tidy, but his use of it was practical. He moved from Sydney to New York, and from transactions to public institutions. The real change was in the unit of analysis. A lawyer can focus on a client and a deal. A diplomat has to understand a field of countries, agencies, advocates and funders, each operating with its own definitions and timelines.
Where institutions met software
After advisory work at the UN and an international financing organization, Stambolis joined Palantir Technologies. From 2012 through 2014, he worked on strategic partnerships tied to global programs and humanitarian response. It placed him close to a recurring operational problem. During a crisis, many organizations arrive with their own tools and reporting processes. More information is produced, yet the institution responsible for a decision can end up with a less coherent view.
This is where his background stopped looking eclectic and started looking specific. Law taught him to examine definitions. Diplomacy taught him to reconcile interests. Partnerships taught him that good technology can still fail if the surrounding institution cannot adopt it. The product opportunity was not merely a better chart. It was the connective tissue between systems already in place.

Stambolis has explained the distinction in plain terms. One approach is to build a single replacement system, an expensive project that asks everyone else to conform. The other is to help organizations use their existing investments more effectively. Zenysis chose the second path.

The quote reveals a pragmatic streak. Enterprise technology likes the clean slate because the clean slate is easier to explain. Institutions rarely have one. They have systems that are politically owned, locally configured, contractually protected or simply too embedded to remove. Treating that history as a constraint to understand, rather than an error to erase, changed what Zenysis needed to build.
A diplomat and an engineer start with the interface
Stambolis co-founded Zenysis with Ian Webster, an engineer whose earlier work included Google and the data project Asterank. Their pairing made structural sense. Webster brought the experience to build fast data infrastructure. Stambolis brought the experience to navigate governments, international organizations and partnerships. One side understood how to connect information at speed. The other understood why a technically correct answer might still be unusable inside a complex institution.
Zenysis entered Y Combinator’s Winter 2016 batch. It grew with a different rhythm from a typical consumer startup. Institutional software depends on trust, implementation and long relationships. A dashboard can be demonstrated in an afternoon. Getting many teams to rely on a shared analytical view takes much longer. It asks for technical performance and a steady understanding of how decisions actually move.
By 2022, the company said its software was used by governments in nine countries across three continents. That June, Zenysis announced a $13.3 million Series B led by the Steele Foundation for Hope, with Peter Thiel and 500 Startups participating. The financing was presented as fuel for a wider geographic footprint and deeper investment in products and partnerships.
The round is a milestone, but the more interesting measure is elapsed time. Seven years passed between founding and Series B. Public-sector adoption can reward endurance more than spectacle. A founder has to survive procurement cycles, local requirements, shifting partners and the basic fact that a customer’s institution will outlast any product release.
Use what exists, then make it coherent
On Australian radio, an interviewer pressed Stambolis on whether data reconciliation had become a trivial technical task. His reply was compact: “I wouldn’t describe it as trivial.” The exchange is useful because it catches the difference between a demo and a deployed system. Matching two columns is easy. Resolving inconsistent names, definitions, reporting standards and locations across many sources, while preserving the confidence of the people who own them, is organizational work expressed through software.
His public comments return to this point. Data has value when a decision-maker can see it in context, alongside the other facts that change its meaning. Integration is not glamorous work. It is cleaning, mapping, harmonizing and agreeing. Those are verbs a former lawyer and diplomat would recognize.
There is also a quieter leadership clue in Zenysis’s expansion to Paris. Asked why the company chose the city, Stambolis cited talent, international connectivity and proximity to important institutions. He also mentioned quality of life. He wanted a place where the team could live well, and planned to spend half his own time there. Geography, in this telling, was not a pin on an expansion map. It was part of how a durable team might work.
Stambolis describes himself through the work more often than through a founder persona. His public record is dominated by institutional interviews, company announcements and partner events. The consistent aspiration is to expand the company’s reach while improving the usefulness of information already held by public institutions. The ambition is broad. The method is deliberately unromantic.
The overlooked product is often the bridge between systems people already depend on.
A nonlinear career with a straight through-line
Look quickly and Stambolis’s path jumps categories: economics, law, property, diplomacy, enterprise technology. Look again and each move adds a layer to the same problem. How do people act together when the underlying structure is complicated? A contract aligns owners. A negotiation aligns countries. A data platform aligns information. None eliminates disagreement or mess. Each makes it manageable enough to proceed.
This is the most portable idea in his story. Career capital does not compound only inside a single title or industry. It can compound around a recurring problem. Stambolis followed fragmentation across professions until he and Webster could turn it into a company.
The result is less a leap from diplomacy to software than a change in medium. The old work happened through clauses, briefings and negotiated language. The newer work happens through pipelines, common structures and analytical views. Both depend on precision. Both fail when one party assumes everyone means the same thing.
For Stambolis, the decisive insight was not that institutions lacked information. They had plenty. They lacked a reliable way to see it together. His career supplied the same lesson slowly: the pieces become more powerful when someone takes responsibility for the connections.
