Independently wants proof before the first invoice

Hiring a freelancer is easy. Proving they belong outside payroll is the harder job Independently wants to make routine.

Tuesday is the dangerous day. In Jeff Nugent’s telling, everyone wants the contractor working and the billing started. The supporting paperwork can wait. Once money begins moving, the unfinished file tends to stay unfinished. Independently, the company he co-founded, is built around getting that file completed while the engagement is still being arranged.

The quick read
  • Checks contractor engagements and assembles the evidence behind each assessment.
  • Sells to enterprises and workforce providers, with integrations into existing hiring systems.
  • Lists plans from $50 per worker per month, plus prepaid and enterprise options.

There is something wonderfully unglamorous about this proposition. The flexible-work economy offers access to specialists, shorter commitments and talent beyond a company’s immediate geography. Independently concentrates on the administrative question underneath those promises: can the organization explain why it engaged this person as an independent business?

A decision needs a memory

The company describes a three-stage process. Workers and companies supply information and documents. A compliance engine applies jurisdiction-specific analysis and produces a score and recommendations. Onboarding follows, accompanied by monitoring and a defense file for the engagement. Its homepage describes human-guided AI and coverage across more than 50 jurisdictions.

The distinction between a result and its supporting record is the useful part. A result tells the next person what to do. A record lets someone later examine how that result was reached. In a company with several departments, suppliers and hiring managers, the second job is easy to neglect precisely because the first job feels urgent.

DISA’s product description makes the file tangible: survey responses from the worker and hiring manager, submitted documents, compliance scoring and the regulatory logic used. The output is called a Certificate of Determination. Business registration, tax forms and insurance evidence can sit alongside the assessment. The point is to preserve the reasoning with its inputs.

The AI has a boundary

Nugent’s February 2026 interview with Ascen introduces a revealing qualification. AI helps parse documents and catch anomalies, he says, but testing produced unacceptable errors in judgment. He describes Independently as software built with lawyers’ advice to support employer decisions.

“However, we will never have AI make the judgment calls.”

That boundary makes the business more interesting. An automation product has to choose which burdens it can remove responsibly. Extracting information and organizing a repeatable process are useful jobs in themselves. A buyer should distinguish those capabilities from a promise that a machine can settle every difficult employment question. The founder’s account supplies a reason to make that distinction.

Get inside the system already in use

Nugent arrived with experience in staffing, vendor management and employer-of-record services. The Contingent Workforce Institute identifies him as a co-founder of Independently and describes his earlier involvement in People 2.0. This is a business built by someone familiar with the organizations between a worker and the company buying their time.

That background helps explain the positioning. Independently’s intended buyers include enterprise HR, legal and procurement teams, staffing firms and workforce platforms. Its website offers API or CSV intake and webhook results. Contractors participate in the process; platforms can embed validation within their own onboarding. The software is designed to work across an existing supplier network.

In April 2024, Flentis announced an integration with its FlentisPRO vendor management platform. The announcement described classification in more than 25 countries, automated documentation and resources to help workers meet contractor requirements. It is a concrete distribution choice: put the assessment where the contingent workforce is already being managed.

The January 2026 DISA partnership extends that approach into screening. The announcement combines DISA’s background-checking capabilities with Independently’s classification intelligence. The commercial logic is straightforward. Checking a person’s background and assessing an engagement answer different questions, but both can belong before work starts. One established workflow can introduce the other.

Human Cloud added another route in March 2026, highlighting an Independently IC Verification certification for solutions on its platform. Together, these relationships suggest a market position between hiring technology and the organizations using it. Manual reviews and bundled workforce services remain alternatives. Some of those providers can also become channels.

There is also a worker-facing part of the proposition. Independently’s website describes education, small-business referrals and a portable compliance profile. For a contractor moving among clients, repeated administration is an obvious nuisance. For the purchasing organization, a clear process gives everyone a shared set of expectations. Those interests can overlap, even when the enterprise is the party choosing the system.

The arithmetic is refreshingly visible

Independently publishes three buying options in US dollars: $50 per worker per month, $240 for a prepaid check covering up to 12 months per worker, and a custom annual unlimited license. The enterprise option lists single sign-on, premium support and custom integrations. This is a business-to-business software model with both usage-based and annual purchasing routes.

At five engaged months, monthly list charges reach $250. Compare scope and terms as well as duration.

The protection language deserves the same precision. Independently markets insurance-backed compliance; its public subscription terms contain warranty disclaimers and liability limits, and exclude indemnification for promotional programs. The relevant agreement and coverage therefore matter to the purchase. A defense file and an insurance promise perform different jobs.

Finish the file while everyone is listening

The operating lesson is practical: collect both sides of the engagement story, retain the evidence and put completion inside onboarding. An organization can copy that discipline before buying software. Automation becomes more attractive as the number of engagements, suppliers and locations makes consistent follow-through harder.

The approach depends on truthful inputs and a working relationship that matches the assessment. A tidy file cannot compensate for inaccurate answers or managers changing how the work is performed. Independently’s emphasis on monitoring acknowledges that an engagement continues after its first questionnaire. Tuesday is only the beginning.

That is the appeal of the company’s narrow focus. Someone still has to ask the questions, supply the documents and take responsibility for the engagement. Software can make those steps easier to complete and easier to revisit. The file becomes useful when it reflects what actually happened.
