GT Medical Technologies makes one thing exceptionally well: GammaTile, an FDA-cleared, bioresorbable radiation implant for operable brain tumors. During surgery to remove a tumor, the neurosurgeon lines the resection cavity with soft collagen tiles embedded with Cesium-131 radioactive seeds. Radiation begins immediately - at the moment residual tumor cell counts are lowest - and stays focused on the tumor bed while sparing healthy brain tissue. Then the tile dissolves. No second procedure to remove it.
The approach is called surgically targeted radiation therapy, and it rearranges the usual timeline of cancer care. Conventional treatment asks a patient to heal from surgery and then return, weeks later, for external beam radiation - time in which stray cancer cells can regroup. GammaTile compresses that gap to zero.
The company that built it did not set out to be a company at all. In 2011, five brain tumor specialists at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix kept seeing the same heartbreak: patients whose recurrent tumors were operable, but who had already received all the external radiation their healthy tissue could safely absorb. The clinicians asked whether radiation delivered from inside the cavity could give those patients another chance. Six years later, in October 2017, they incorporated GT Medical Technologies to carry the idea through FDA clearance.

The market for brain tumor radiation is built around big machines and repeat visits - external beam radiation and stereotactic radiosurgery systems like Elekta's Gamma Knife and Accuray's CyberKnife, plus tumor-treating fields from Novocure. Those approaches bring the patient to the radiation.
GT Medical inverts it. GammaTile is placed once, inside a surgery that is already happening, and delivers its dose from within the tumor bed. The differentiators are timing (radiation starts the day of surgery), focus (dose concentrated at the cavity), and convenience (a bioresorbable device that needs no removal).
