Greypoint Industries Wants to Make Drone Killers Cheaper Than the Drones
Four founders, one of them ex-infantry, are mass-producing autonomous interceptors to counter drone swarms - and betting that the economics of air defense are about to flip.
There is a piece of arithmetic that keeps defense planners awake. A commercial drone, bought online and rigged with an explosive, can cost a few hundred dollars. The armored vehicle it destroys can cost several million. Send those cheap drones in a swarm, and the math only gets worse for the side doing the defending. Greypoint Industries, a four-person company in Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch, was started to argue with that arithmetic.
The pitch is blunt: mass-produced autonomous interceptors that defeat drone saturation for a fraction of the cost of the targets. In plainer terms, a small, cheap flying machine that a soldier can launch to knock an attacking drone out of the sky - and that does not bankrupt the person who fires it. The company calls the interceptor soldier-deployable and fire-and-forget, which is a way of saying you point it in the right direction, let go, and it does the rest.
The ProblemWhen cheap becomes a weapon
For most of the last century, the expensive, precise, human-piloted machine won. The drone era inverted that. What matters now is not one flawless aircraft but a thousand disposable ones, and the side that can build cheaply and build a lot has the advantage. Ukraine and the Middle East turned this from a theory into nightly footage. Militaries that spent decades buying small numbers of exquisite systems suddenly needed a way to stop large numbers of crude ones - without spending a missile worth six figures on a target worth three.
That is the gap Greypoint is aiming at. The traditional counter-drone answer - a radar, a jammer, a guided interceptor costing far more than the drone - does not survive contact with a swarm. Fire ten of those at a hundred incoming drones and you have won a single skirmish and lost the budget. Greypoint's whole design constraint is that its interceptor has to be cheap enough to fire without a second thought.
There is a second problem hiding inside the first one: attention. A soldier facing a swarm does not have time to identify each threat, calculate an intercept, and squeeze a trigger a hundred times. Fear, noise, and fatigue all work against precision at exactly the moment precision is needed. That is why Greypoint keeps returning to the word autonomous. The interceptor is meant to do the tracking and the terminal work itself, so the person launching it can go back to staying alive. Fire-and-forget is not a marketing flourish here; it is a claim about how many decisions a human should have to make while under attack.
The phrase soldier-deployable carries its own weight. It rules out anything that needs a truck, a trained crew, or a fixed installation. Whatever Greypoint ships has to fit into the load a person already carries and survive the abuse of the field. That is a harder engineering problem than building something bigger and more capable, and it is the constraint the founders seem most attached to.
The ApproachDon't chase every drone
Alongside the interceptor, Greypoint has described a second system it calls LEGION - an autonomous swarm designed to identify, geolocate, and track the radio emitters on a battlefield. Jammers, command posts, and the operators flying the drones all give off signals. LEGION is built to find them, turning hidden targets into known coordinates and letting a force act before it is acted upon rather than swatting at threats one at a time.

Detect each incoming drone, then spend a costly interceptor on it, one by one, until the magazine - or the budget - runs dry.

Make interception cheap and autonomous, and separately hunt the operators and emitters coordinating the swarm in the first place.
It is a subtle shift in where you point the effort. Intercept the drones you must, but also find the people and hardware directing them. A swarm without coordination is a lot less frightening than a swarm with it. It is also a more efficient use of resources: every operator you locate is potentially dozens of drones you never have to shoot down.
What can a force actually do with this? In practice, the interceptor gives a small unit a way to survive contact with drones it could not previously answer - a portable shield rather than a promise that a distant air-defense battery will notice in time. LEGION, meanwhile, turns the electromagnetic clutter of a battlefield into a map. Signals that once meant only "something is out there" become "something is out there, and here is where." For a commander, that is the difference between reacting to an attack and disrupting it before it starts.
The TeamFrom the infantry to the workshop
Greypoint was founded by four people who describe themselves as lifelong friends, with backgrounds that reach into the Canadian Infantry and into hardware engineering at places like General Dynamics, Bosch Quantum Sensing, and TerraSense Analytics. That infantry thread matters more than it might seem. Someone who has carried gear into the field tends to have strong, specific opinions about weight, cost, and whether a thing actually works when it is cold, wet, and nobody is watching.
The company's origin story includes a win at Canada's first Defence Tech Hackathon, where the team proposed using satellite data and drones to detect and monitor unidentified vessels in the Arctic - a sovereignty problem rather than a battlefield one. From there the group formalized into Greypoint, became a founding member of a new Canadian defence alliance known as ACDC, and demonstrated geolocation capability with the Canadian Armed Forces before landing in Y Combinator.
The BusinessSelling hardware, not seats
Greypoint is a manufacturer, not a software subscription. It intends to design and build its systems largely within North America - Canadian materials, Canadian labor - and sell to Western and allied armed forces, the kind of customer that buys through defense procurement rather than a credit card. That is a slower, heavier path than a typical startup, and it is also the point. In a market defined by who can produce cheaply and at scale, owning the manufacturing is the strategy, not an afterthought.
The sovereignty angle gives it a second story to tell. As allied governments grow uneasy about depending on foreign supply chains for critical defense gear, a company that keeps design and production on home soil has a pitch that goes beyond specifications. Greypoint is leaning into it. Canadian materials and Canadian labor are not just cost lines; they are an argument to a government buyer that this capability cannot be switched off from somewhere else.
There is a broader shift behind Greypoint's presence in a Y Combinator batch at all. For most of the last two decades, the accelerator's signature companies were software - things you could ship overnight and scale without a factory. Hardware, and defense hardware especially, was considered too slow, too capital-hungry, too entangled with government to fit the model. That assumption has been loosening. A defense manufacturer sitting in the same batch as consumer apps is a small sign that the industry's center of gravity is moving toward companies that make physical things for hard, unglamorous problems.
The MarketA crowded, urgent field
Greypoint is not alone. Counter-drone is one of the busiest corners of defense tech, with established names like DroneShield and Dedrone, well-funded newcomers like Anduril, and a wave of startups all promising to solve the same problem. Many of them are excellent at detection - telling you a drone is coming. Fewer are focused on the cheap, physical business of defeating it once it arrives. What Greypoint is betting on is that narrower position: the cheapest, most producible, most soldier-friendly interceptor, made in North America. Whether that thesis holds depends on execution that a four-person team has only started to prove.
The risks are the ordinary ones for a company this young, made sharper by the industry. Defense procurement is slow and relationship-heavy; a product that works in a demonstration still has years of testing and paperwork between it and a soldier's hands. Manufacturing at scale is its own discipline, distinct from building a working prototype. And the competition includes companies with hundreds of employees and far deeper pockets. Greypoint's answer to all of it is focus - one hard problem, one clear constraint, and a team that has been in the field the product is meant to serve.
For now the company is early - a small seed, a first batch, a handful of demonstrations. The relocation from Vancouver toward San Francisco, the ACDC membership, the hackathon trophy, and the early work with the Canadian Armed Forces are the kind of signals that suggest a team taking itself seriously without yet having anything to sell at scale. That gap between promise and production is where most defense startups either grow up or quietly disappear.
But the problem it picked is not going away, and the arithmetic that started this story keeps getting more lopsided. Every month, cheap drones get a little smarter and a little more plentiful, and the cost of ignoring them climbs. Greypoint's whole reason for existing is to make that math a little less comfortable for the side sending the drones - to give a soldier a cheap, autonomous answer to a cheap, autonomous threat. Whether four founders can build it at the scale the pitch demands is the open question. The pitch itself is hard to argue with.
