Delegasi Does the Books So the Cafe Owner Doesn't Have To

A Bandung fintech backed by Y Combinator is chasing the least glamorous problem in Indonesian small business: the accounting nobody has time to do. Connect the POS, upload the receipts, and the financial statements arrive on their own.

The founders of Delegasi did not set out to build an accounting company. In early 2021, Okky Pratama and Anshorimuslim Syuhada - friends since college, more than twelve years by then - were trying to fix hiring for restaurants and cafes. They pitched owners on a way to find staff. The owners listened politely and then, almost every time, changed the subject to the same thing: the books.

Not payroll. Not marketing. The accounting. Who had time to reconcile a drawer of receipts against a bank statement after a fourteen-hour day on the line? Delegasi's two founders heard that answer enough times to stop defending their roadmap and start rebuilding it. The hiring tool went in a drawer. The company that came out of the pivot is what got them into Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch.

What Delegasi does now is narrow and specific: it is an automated accounting service for Indonesian small businesses, starting with restaurants and cafes. An owner connects their point-of-sale system and food-delivery data, uploads receipts, bank statements and inventory counts, and Delegasi produces the financial statements and analysis. No manual entry. No accounting knowledge required. The company describes itself as the first virtual financial manager in Indonesia.

"Accounting is always a hassle for small business owners. As they need to handle lots of things, finding time for accounting is too hard." - Delegasi, on why they built it
The problem

01The software that everyone bought and nobody used

There is no shortage of accounting software in Indonesia. That was never the gap. Delegasi's founders kept meeting owners who had already paid for a full year of some tool and then quit using it inside the first month or two. The subscription kept renewing. The bookkeeping did not get done.

The reason is quiet but important: most accounting software still assumes you are, on some level, an accountant. It asks you to categorize, to reconcile, to know what a chart of accounts is. For a cafe owner juggling suppliers, staff and a lunch rush, that is one more skill to learn on top of a dozen others. So the tool sits unused, and the owner goes back to a shoebox and a gut feeling about whether the month went well.

Accounting is the task that loses the fight for the owner's time. Delegasi's bet is to remove it from the schedule entirely.

How it works

02Connect, upload, done

The product is built around a workflow that a busy owner can finish without thinking about debits and credits. Delegasi pulls in the transaction data that already exists and does the reconciliation in the background.

1

Connect

Link your POS and food-delivery service data so sales flow in automatically.

2

Upload

Add receipts, bank statements and stock opname (inventory) records.

3

Receive

Financial statements and F&B-tailored analysis, ready - no manual input.

The last step is the whole point. Delegasi does not hand back a blank ledger for the owner to fill in. It hands back the finished statements and an analysis written for how restaurants and cafes actually make and lose money - food cost, margins, the shape of a good week versus a bad one.

"Business Intelligence for everyone." - Ans Syuhada, co-founder & CTO
Who it's for

03Starting where the pain was loudest

Delegasi's first customers are the exact owners whose complaints redirected the company: restaurant and cafe operators. It is a deliberate wedge. Instead of a general-purpose accounting tool for everyone, Delegasi speaks one industry's language first. The analysis knows what a food business looks like, which makes the output useful on day one rather than after a lot of setup.

Indonesia has an enormous base of small food businesses, and almost none of them run a finance team. That is the market Delegasi is aiming at - the unbuilt back office of neighborhood F&B, where the choice today is usually a spreadsheet, a part-time bookkeeper, or nothing at all.

How it's different

04Done-for-you, not easier-to-do

Most accounting tools compete on being simpler to operate. Delegasi competes on a different axis: not making the owner operate anything. The distinction sounds small and is not. "Easier software" still leaves the work with the person who has no time for it. "Done for you" moves the work off their plate.

The competitive set is the usual suspects of Indonesian bookkeeping - established software, part-time bookkeepers, spreadsheets - plus the very common option of doing nothing. Delegasi's argument against all of them is the same: the owner shouldn't have to become an accountant to know whether they made money this month.

The people

05An MBA who reads statements for fun, and a builder

Okky Pratama, the CEO, has an MBA from MIT Sloan and was Senior VP of Business & Operations at Modal Rakyat, part of Fazz Financial Group, before Delegasi. His own bio notes he reads financial statements as a hobby - a useful trait when your customers would rather do almost anything else. Anshorimuslim "Ans" Syuhada, the CTO, is an Institut Teknologi Bandung graduate with a background across product and data-intensive systems, and an active presence in Indonesia's tech community.

The pairing maps neatly onto the product: one founder who loves the thing the customer dreads, one who can build the machine that hides it from them. Delegasi was accepted into Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch, with Gustaf Alstromer as the group's partner.

The model

06B2B, and pointed at a big quiet market

Delegasi is a B2B service: small businesses pay to have their bookkeeping and financial analysis handled from data they already generate. Fintech, SaaS and B2B are the three tags the company carries. The team is small - eight people out of Bandung - and the strategy is to go deep in one vertical before going wide.

Where it fits in the market is the interesting part. This isn't a flashier delivery app or a slicker menu. It's the financial infrastructure underneath thousands of food businesses that have never had any. If that layer gets built, the owner finally gets to close the laptop and trust the number - which, for someone who's been running on instinct, is the whole product.
