COMPANY / LOGISTICS / NOWPORTS

Nowports makes freight less of a guessing game

A container carries two loads: the goods inside it and the uncertainty surrounding it. Nowports built a business around helping Latin American companies manage both.

There is a peculiar thing about a shipping container. You can put a seal on its doors, assign it a number and watch it cross an ocean. Yet ask a business when its goods will arrive, which document is missing or what the final bill will be, and the answer may require a small expedition through somebody’s inbox. The steel box is standardized. The conversation around it often isn’t.

THE QUICK READ
  • Nowports coordinates ocean, air and ground freight for international businesses.
  • Its platform gathers shipment updates, documents and invoices in one place.
  • Financing and cargo protection extend the relationship beyond booking transport.

Nowports works on that conversation. It is a digital freight forwarder: an intermediary that organizes the movement of goods through a network of transportation providers. Customers bring a route, a load and a deadline. Nowports combines operational help with a platform for following the shipment. Its stated mission is to simplify international trade in Latin America. A large ambition, expressed through some satisfyingly small tasks.

The container’s second cargo

Start with the documents. A bill of lading, an invoice and a permit may refer to the same shipment while living in different places. Nowports’ platform places them together. Its shipment map shows updated arrival estimates; alerts flag changes. The financial view gathers invoices and payments. Each function addresses a recognizable irritation: calling for a location, hunting for an attachment, reconciling a bill after the month has closed.

The platform’s browser access also matters. A logistics manager can look up an operation without installing another application. Reports can be downloaded, and updates scheduled. These are modest conveniences until multiplied across a busy department. The point is to reduce repeated clerical work and give the next person enough information to continue the job.

The box travels once. The work around it keeps changing hands. Services and eligibility vary by market.

There is a human counterpart to the screen. Nowports describes dedicated account executives and a team with decades of industry experience. Its current website claims more than 5,000 customers and a network connecting over 90 countries. Those are company figures. The useful distinction is that global reach comes through a network; it does not require a Nowports office at every destination.

The customer who needed it most

Alfonso de los Ríos grew up around his family’s freight-forwarding business. Maximiliano Casal combined software experience with work in traditional logistics. They met at a Stanford summer bootcamp in 2017, built an early product and joined Y Combinator’s Winter 2019 batch. Their description of those early days is pleasantly literal: selling during the day, coding at night.

The important discovery came later. In a 2023 interview, de los Ríos said it took roughly three years to recognize that medium-to-large enterprises needed Nowports more urgently than the smaller businesses initially targeted. Retail, automotive and manufacturing became its focus. That is a useful distinction for a founder: enthusiasm for a product and dependence on it produce different buying decisions.

Two founders, one very conspicuous unicorn. Nowports’ 2022 announcement artwork puts the celebration right behind the people doing the work.

For these customers, a late component can disrupt production. Visibility earns its keep when somebody has time to adjust. The lesson a reader can copy is practical: identify the customer whose routine becomes expensive when information is missing, then organize the product around that routine. A prettier map alone is a weak reason to change suppliers.

The money inside the box

The goods in transit are also money in transit. An importer may have paid a supplier before it can sell the inventory. Nowports’ financing offering addresses that interval. Its current services page advertises Mexico financing with payment terms up to 120 days, subject to approval, alongside inventory financing and factoring. The shipment relationship supplies context for a credit decision.

Protection adds another service around the same operation. Nowports facilitates cargo and container coverage through partners; it does not itself become an insurer. Its protection material names Chubb Seguros and VAIS. Coverage, exclusions and claims arrangements still matter. Putting the application beside the shipment makes administration easier, but the terms determine what happens when the cargo is damaged.

This gives Nowports several commercial opportunities within one customer relationship. The core service is freight forwarding, with shipment-specific quotations and platform access accompanying cargo movements. Additional services can deepen that relationship. Buyers should request an itemized quote: route, cargo dimensions, transport mode and timing make a universal freight price meaningless. Credit terms require their own assessment.

After the confetti

In May 2022, a US$150 million Series C led by SoftBank Latin America Fund valued Nowports at US$1.1 billion. The company had announced a US$60 million Series B the previous December. Investors were paying for expansion, technology and a broader financial offering. The valuation describes that transaction; it is a dated milestone, rather than a live scoreboard.

Investment raised at a $1.1 billion valuation. Funding is capital for the business, not the price customers pay.

Expansion carried costs. In 2023, Nowports confirmed layoffs to Montevideo Portal and described them as an effort to improve efficiency. It did not confirm the number of departures. That episode belongs beside the funding announcement: a company moving physical goods must manage people and operations as carefully as its software.

In January 2025, Coneksion announced a partnership to connect Nowports with carriers, shippers and operational systems, including bookings, tracking and electronic shipping documents. This is the plumbing behind a useful dashboard. A shipment record becomes more trustworthy when updates flow between the organizations that actually handle it.

Ask better questions before booking

Alternatives include established freight forwarders, regional specialists and digital providers such as Flexport. Nowports’ proposition is Latin American trade expertise combined with operational service, visibility and adjacent financial tools. Compare providers on a real route. Ask who handles exceptions, which charges are included and whether your team can work from the documents shown in a demonstration. Bring your accounting team into that conversation, too. A logistics platform can show an invoice clearly and still leave the buyer with reconciliation work. The demonstration should follow the shipment through to the bill.

“At the end of the day we can’t control whether or not there are delays.”

A tracker cannot remove congestion or settle a customs question by itself. A borrower still needs approval; a protected shipment still has coverage conditions. For a simple, occasional shipment, the advantages of a shared workspace may be smaller. For an operation where several departments need the same answer, Nowports offers a concrete possibility: fewer searches for information, and more time to decide what to do with it.
