Founded in 2018 and out of stealth in 2022, Nile sells campus networks the way streaming services sell movies - as a subscription. Its Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) offering bundles the hardware, the software, the security, and the round-the-clock monitoring into a single recurring fee, with contractual guarantees on coverage, capacity, and availability. Customers stop owning switches and start buying connectivity.
The pitch lands because of who is making it. Co-founders Pankaj Patel, Cisco's former chief development officer, and John Chambers, who ran Cisco for two decades, worked together for nearly 25 years before starting over with a blank page - and taking direct aim at the company they helped make dominant. Joining them are co-founders Suresh Katukam and Sri Hosakote, also Cisco veterans.
Nile's founding insight was not that networks are hard to build - they clearly aren't, given how much of the internet runs on gear the founders once shipped. It was that networks are expensive and fragile to operate. Enterprises spend an estimated $75 billion a year just keeping networks running: patching, troubleshooting, chasing coverage complaints, reconfiguring VLANs and access-control lists by hand.
That operational tax is the entire opportunity. By automating design, deployment, monitoring, and repair, Nile aims to remove human dependence from the network - what it markets as a "self-driving" system. AI lays out the design, provisions the equipment, watches every packet, and resolves many issues before a ticket is ever filed.
Security is handled the same way: designed in rather than added on. Every device is isolated by default under a zero-trust model, with end-to-end encryption and automatic patching - so there are no trusted zones for an intruder to move through laterally.

Nile's early adopters skew toward organizations tired of managing networks themselves: Stanford University, the University of Denver, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, equity-management firm Carta, and Pitney Bowes. Higher education is a natural fit - sprawling campuses, heavy guest traffic, lean IT teams.
What separates Nile from Cisco Meraki, HPE Aruba, or Juniper Mist is less any single feature than the shape of the deal. Traditional vendors sell you hardware and wish you luck; Nile sells an outcome and puts coverage, capacity, and availability in the contract.
