Every research university faces the same quiet math problem. A mass spectrometer can cost half a million dollars and sit idle most of the month. A flow cytometer, an HPLC rig, a real-time PCR machine - each is expensive, specialized, and rarely used at full tilt. Multiply that across a continent where research budgets are thin, and you get a lot of science that simply never happens.
Nawah Scientific was built to answer that math. Founded in Cairo in 2015 by Omar Shoukry Sakr, the company operates what it calls a "cloud lab": a network of advanced laboratories that customers reach remotely. A PhD student or a food exporter submits a sample or a testing request through an online platform, Nawah runs the analysis on centrally owned equipment, and the results come back digitally. No instrument to buy, no facility to maintain - just access, charged per test.
The name is deliberate. "Nawah" is the Arabic word for nucleus, and Sakr has described his vision as building "a nucleus of very high tech scientific equipment located in one place." Concentrate the hardware; let a region orbit it. A decade on, that nucleus has processed more than a million samples for clients in over 30 countries, and in December 2025 it closed a $23 million Series A - a rare, sizeable raise for African deep-tech.

Nawah organizes its work into four business units, each pointed at a different slice of the applied-science economy. Together they cover the tests behind everyday products - the protein figures on a food label, a drug's stability under heat, the safety of a water sample.
Molecular biology, microbiology and viral assays, cell-based work, flow cytometry, PCR and real-time PCR, ELISA and biomarker analysis for academics and biotech teams.
Certified food safety and quality testing - nutritional labeling, food microbiology, foodborne-virus detection, water quality and halal testing for producers and exporters.
Formulation support, stability studies, API testing, drug-delivery systems, plus analytical characterization via HPLC and mass spectrometry.
Production of certified reference materials for instrument calibration and quality control, underpinned by ISO and other accreditations.
The problem Nawah tackles is access. Advanced instruments are expensive, and in much of the Middle East and Africa they are scarce, unevenly maintained, or locked behind institutions. Researchers with good questions often lack the tools to answer them; companies that need certified testing to export sometimes have nowhere local to get it. Science stalls not for lack of talent, but for lack of infrastructure.
Nawah's difference is structural. Traditional contract labs test what you send and stop there; in-house labs force every institution to buy and idle its own gear. Nawah instead behaves like shared infrastructure - one core of equipment, opened up remotely, spreading the cost of each instrument across many customers. It is closer in spirit to a utility than to a single testing service, and it is one of the few outfits offering that remote-access model tuned specifically for the region.
Funding follows structure. Biotech has long struggled to raise on the continent - in 2021, fintech captured the lion's share of African venture capital. Sakr has recalled investors telling him plainly that they had no comparable company to benchmark him against. His response was to keep building until Nawah itself became the benchmark.
The Series A is being deployed on three fronts: a 10,000-square-metre global research center in Rwanda, doubling laboratory capacity in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and further expansion across North Africa and Europe. The heavy, physical nature of the business - real labs, real instruments - is reflected in the deal's structure, a blend of equity, debt and grant funding rather than equity alone.

Omar Shoukry Sakr came to entrepreneurship the long way. He earned a PhD in nano drug delivery systems at the University of Geneva, completing it in 2015, then took an MBA at Hult International Business School in London. A 2017 placement at a Berlin biotech company is where the startup mindset clicked. He has been candid about the cost of building, too - describing years of 18-hour days, six days a week, before therapy in 2019 pushed him toward a more sustainable pace. The company kept growing.

In market terms, Nawah occupies the layer beneath the visible economy of drugs, foods and consumer goods - the testing and R&D infrastructure those products depend on. Its rivals are of two kinds: the in-house labs of universities and corporations, and the global testing and contract-research firms such as SGS, Eurofins and Bureau Veritas. Against pure cloud-lab peers - US pioneers like Emerald Cloud Lab and Strateos - Nawah's edge is regional: a remote-access model designed for the realities of the Middle East and Africa.
Its customers span PhD students and universities to pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, agriculture and chemical companies. What they buy is not a product so much as capability - the ability to run advanced, accredited analysis without owning the machine. For a region trying to move up the value chain from raw exports to research-backed goods, that capability is the point.
