The Company That Wants Blockchain Borders to Disappear

LayerZero wants blockchains to behave less like rival islands and more like one programmable network. Its bet is that the winning bridge will not feel like a bridge at all - but its configurable security model makes the builder part of the defense.

The most useful thing LayerZero Labs makes is something its customers would rather their own customers never notice. Open a wallet, send a stablecoin, trade an asset, cast a governance vote: the action may begin on one blockchain and finish on another. LayerZero is the courier in the walls, carrying the instruction between two systems that do not naturally speak. When the trip works, there is no border booth and no little sign telling the user that a packet just crossed a digital jurisdiction.

That is a tidy outcome for a spectacularly untidy market. Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, Aptos and scores of newer networks keep separate ledgers, execution environments and communities. Their differences are often the point. They are also a practical nuisance for a developer who wants one application, or one token, to reach users everywhere. Traditional bridges answered that nuisance by locking an asset on one chain and issuing a wrapped stand-in on another. Every new wrapper created another pool of liquidity, another contract to trust and another place for accounting to go sideways.

LayerZero's answer is not a universal blockchain. It is a transport protocol: immutable endpoint contracts on each connected chain, a set of independent parties that verify messages and executors that deliver them. The company says the network now reaches more than 170 blockchains. In 2026 it reported 160 million lifetime messages and about $260 billion in value moved. Those are company figures, but the customer list makes the scale less abstract: PayPal USD, Paxos, Ondo Finance, BitGo, Fireblocks, Ethena and the State of Wyoming have all used its rails or standards.

A postal service for smart contracts

CEO Bryan Pellegrino has described LayerZero's messages as “internet-packaged messaging between computers.” The phrase is useful because “messaging” otherwise conjures chat bubbles. A LayerZero message can tell a destination contract that tokens were burned on the source chain, that a vote was cast, that collateral changed or that another smart contract should run. The protocol is agnostic about the content. It is closer to registered mail for software than WhatsApp for wallets.

The unusual part sits in the middle. Most interoperability systems ask applications to inherit a common validator or guardian set. LayerZero V2 lets each application choose Decentralized Verifier Networks, or DVNs, and combine them into its own security stack. One issuer might require attestations from its own infrastructure, Google Cloud and a zero-knowledge provider. Another could favor a different mix of cost, speed, jurisdiction and reputation. Execution is separate and permissionless: if a designated executor refuses to deliver, someone else can pay the destination gas and finish the job.

That modularity is LayerZero's clearest distinction from Chainlink CCIP, Wormhole and Axelar. It reduces the chance that one compromised shared set imperils every application at once, and it lets regulated issuers retain control. It also declines to make the hardest choice for the builder. A flexible security menu is only safer when someone orders well.

One asset, not a suitcase of disguises

The Omnichain Fungible Token standard, mercifully shortened to OFT, packages that messaging model for token issuers. Instead of creating unrelated wrapped copies, an issuer can preserve one total supply across chains. A transfer debits supply on the source and credits it on the destination after the chosen verifiers attest to the message. The issuer keeps control over features such as pauses, blocklists, rate limits and verifier selection.

For PayPal USD, that meant self-custodied tokens could move between Ethereum and Solana without a trip through PayPal or Venmo. Paxos selected a verifier stack that included its own infrastructure, Google Cloud and LayerZero Labs. Ondo built a different arrangement for tokenized Treasury products, mixing its own verifier with independent providers. The pattern matters more than the logos: one standard, several security recipes.

Developers can go beyond tokens. OApps send arbitrary state and contract calls across chains. ONFT contracts apply a similar idea to non-fungible tokens. LayerZero Scan lets a user inspect a message's journey, a kind of parcel tracker for an object with no physical address. Stargate, the best-known application built on LayerZero, adds liquidity pools and a bridge interface for moving native assets. The consumer sees a swap; the protocol sees messages, attestations, gas and delivery.

Who pays for invisible plumbing?

LayerZero is an open protocol, but LayerZero Labs is a commercial company. In 2026 the company finally described its revenue lines with unusual specificity. It operates executors and destination-gas services, earning margins on transactions. It charges commercial fees to connect new chains. Its Value Transfer API takes basis points on token movement for wallets, treasuries and stablecoin settlement. Console, an operations product for issuers, is sold through annual subscriptions.

Independent DVNs and executors collect fees too. A separate, governance-controlled protocol fee can be activated to buy and burn ZRO, the ecosystem's token. Stargate generates transfer, swap and liquidity-management revenue. This creates a layered business: the basic language is open, while reliable delivery, managed operations and distribution are services. It resembles commercial open-source software more than a tollbooth owned by one bridge operator.

Venture investors priced that possibility aggressively. After a $6 million round in 2021 and a $135 million financing in 2022, LayerZero Labs raised $120 million from 33 investors in April 2023 at a $3 billion valuation. Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, Circle Ventures, Samsung Next, OpenSea Ventures, Christie's and BOND participated. The valuation belongs to a louder crypto era. The company now has to justify it with quieter things: enterprise integrations, recurring software and message volume.

The freedom to configure badly

LayerZero's design makes a strong promise: a properly configured application can remove reliance on LayerZero Labs. The italicized phrase should be properly configured. In April 2026, attackers poisoned the internal RPC data used by the LayerZero Labs DVN while an external provider was also under denial-of-service attack. One application had allowed that DVN to stand alone for high-value transfers. The company said the core protocol was unaffected, but its own verifier had become a single point of failure.

The lesson in the incidentModular security can isolate risk, but only if an application uses more than one independent source of truth. Choice does not remove responsibility; it relocates it.

LayerZero's response was unusually direct. It apologized, stopped serving one-of-one configurations through its DVN and recommended at least two verifiers, with three to five preferred. Defaults began moving to a minimum three-of-three setup. The team announced a second verifier client in Rust, stronger RPC quorums, higher multisig thresholds and anomaly detection in Console. Those changes do not erase the incident. They do illustrate the market's central argument over interoperability: is standardized security safer than configurable security, or merely less adaptable?

Chainlink CCIP offers a shared, defense-in-depth system with a separate risk-management network. Wormhole has a guardian model and deep roots in non-EVM ecosystems. Axelar uses a proof-of-stake validator network. Hyperlane, like LayerZero, emphasizes modular security. Buyers are not choosing a simple speed winner. They are choosing which parties to trust, how much configuration to own and what failure can spread.

From DeFi tool to financial back office

LayerZero's early customers were decentralized exchanges and crypto-native applications. The newer pitch addresses asset issuers, compliance teams and treasury desks. Fireblocks embedded LayerZero into its tokenization engine. Centrifuge is pairing tokenized-fund infrastructure with multichain distribution. Worldpay, Fidelity's Center for Applied Technology, Deutsche Telekom and Google Cloud operate production DVNs that applications can select. Keeta and LayerZero have announced work on making tokenized commercial-bank deposits portable across public networks.

This is where LayerZero fits in the market: below the wallet and the financial product, above the individual blockchains. It does not issue PayPal USD or Ondo's tokenized stocks. It helps those assets circulate. It does not decide an application's trust model. It provides the contracts, verifier market and delivery rails with which the application expresses one. The ambition is infrastructure broad enough for a game item, a governance vote and a regulated fund share to use the same underlying grammar.

The company is also stretching outward. Console turns protocol configuration into enterprise software. Zero, an announced high-throughput blockchain for trading, payments and settlement, moves LayerZero closer to owning an execution environment as well as the routes between them. That expansion could deepen the ecosystem or make the formerly neutral courier look more like a city planner. It is an open question worth watching.

The great trick would be making “cross-chain” sound as dated as “long-distance call.”

For users, the payoff is straightforward: an application can reach the asset and network they need without forcing them through a maze of wrappers and manual bridge screens. For developers, the payoff is reach, standards and control. For institutions, it is distribution with an explicit security and compliance design. None of that makes cross-chain risk vanish. It makes the machinery inspectable, configurable and, on a good day, invisible.
