The Story

A bank for the borderless economy

Klickl belongs to a small class of crypto companies that led with paperwork. Founded in Abu Dhabi in 2017, it set out to answer an unglamorous question - how do you move money, hold value and get paid across borders when the world's financial rails don't trust one another? Its answer was to become a regulated Web3 open-finance platform: part exchange, part payments company, part custodian, wrapped inside licenses that most crypto firms treat as an afterthought.

Today the company operates from two financial hubs at once - Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong - and describes itself as the region's first fully licensed Web3 banking service. Its entity in the United Arab Emirates is authorized by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) with broker-dealer and custody permissions. It also holds Virtual Asset Service Provider status in Poland, opening the European Union, and is registered as a Money Services Business with FinCEN in the United States.

The product line reads like a retail bank that happens to run on blockchains. Through Klickl Exchange, users trade spot and futures, convert coins in one click, and settle fiat over-the-counter. Around it sits an ecosystem: multi-currency global accounts, virtual IBANs, fiat on and off ramps, custody, and the Klickl Card and Klickl Pay for spending digital assets in the real world.

What sets the company apart is less any single feature than its distribution model. Rather than run one global platform fighting local rules everywhere, Klickl uses an "Alliance Exchange" approach - licensed local partners in each market. That footprint now spans the UAE, Kenya, Poland, Canada, the United States, Malaysia and Hong Kong, aimed squarely at the MENA region and other emerging markets.

In December 2024 investors validated the thesis. Klickl closed an oversubscribed $25 million Series A at a $125 million valuation, co-led by Web3Port Foundation and Aptos Labs. That infrastructure-heavy investor base is a tell: this is a company building rails, not chasing traders.

"This funding empowers us to expand our Web3 banking services, focusing on emerging markets across MENA and beyond." Michael Zhao · Founder & CEO, Klickl

Where It Fits

Regulation as the moat

In a market crowded with Gulf-based challengers - Rain, BitOasis, Fuze, CoinMENA - and global giants like Binance, OKX and Coinbase, Klickl's edge is a compliance-first posture across three jurisdictions at once. Where many exchanges launch first and seek approval later, Klickl stacked ADGM, EU and US licenses before scaling.

Its business model spreads risk across several revenue lines: trading and OTC fees, card and payment interchange, custody and settlement, B2B and enterprise SaaS, and a token-based PayFi ecosystem. The Alliance Exchange network turns local regulation from a barrier into a distribution channel.
