The Dispatch

A word factory in Jakarta

Most conversational AI companies chase a demo. Kata.ai chased a language. For nearly a decade the Jakarta firm has been building natural-language technology tuned to Bahasa Indonesia - the informal, abbreviation-heavy way Indonesians actually message - and turning it into chatbots and AI agents that answer bank customers, screen job applicants and take orders around the clock.

The story begins not with Kata.ai but with a failure. In 2015, Irzan Raditya and his co-founders launched YesBoss, a text-message concierge you could ask to book a table, order food or run an errand. It leaned on humans behind the scenes and did not scale into a lasting business. But it produced something more valuable than revenue: a corpus of how real Indonesians phrase requests, and a conviction that the conversation itself was the product.

In 2016 the team pivoted. Instead of serving consumers directly, they would sell the language engine to enterprises. Kata.ai - "kata" means "word" - was born, and with it the Kata Platform, an end-to-end system for building chatbots and voicebots that understand local speech rather than a stiff, translated English.

That bet on local language turned into a moat. Global chatbot vendors could localize, but few had trained deeply on the slang, spelling variants and code-switching of Indonesian messaging. Banks, telecom operators and consumer-goods giants - the businesses fielding millions of customer questions a day - found in Kata.ai a partner that understood both their customers and their compliance obligations.

Today the platform powers roughly 56 million monthly active users and has handled more than two billion conversations. Its client roster reads like a directory of Indonesian enterprise: Bank Rakyat Indonesia in banking, Unilever in consumer goods, Telkomsel in telecommunications. The work is largely invisible - a WhatsApp reply here, an automated call there - which is precisely the point.

What It Does

From chatbot vendor to AI-agent company

Kata.ai builds the conversational layer between a business and its customers. Where it once shipped scripted chatbots, it now ships AI agents - software that can hold context, pull from company documents and act across channels, with WhatsApp as the dominant last mile in the Indonesian market.

The problems it solves

  • Support teams drowning in repetitive questions at all hours
  • Customers who live inside messaging apps, not web forms
  • Service that has to work in colloquial Bahasa Indonesia, not textbook English
  • Enterprises that need automation wired into SAP, Salesforce, Oracle and Zendesk
  • The cost and delay of building a chatbot from scratch

Who uses it

More than 200 enterprise and government clients across banking and financial services, telecommunications, FMCG and retail, healthcare and insurance, automotive and public agencies. Named users include Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Unilever, Telkomsel and healthtech firm Prixa. The platform serves an estimated 56 million monthly active users.

The Business

How Kata.ai makes money - and why it wins

Business model

B2B SaaS and enterprise licensing. Kata.ai sells subscription access to its platform and AI-agent products, plus GenAI consulting and custom deployment work. Pre-built integrations with Oracle, SAP, Salesforce, Zendesk and HubSpot lower the barrier for large accounts. Third-party trackers estimate revenue around $11M ARR - a figure Kata.ai has not publicly confirmed.

Where it fits in the market

Kata.ai competes with global conversational-AI platforms such as Kore.ai, Yellow.ai and Haptik, and regional players like Qiscus, as well as horizontal LLM tools. Its edge is depth in Bahasa Indonesia and long-standing relationships with Indonesian banks, telcos and government - a home-market advantage that generic global vendors struggle to match.
