The Company Behind the Speaker Is Building the Brain of the Car

You may know the speaker. You probably do not know the company inside the dashboard. HARMAN has spent seven decades turning sound science into a sprawling business across homes, stages and more than 50 million vehicles.

The odd thing about HARMAN International is that its least famous name owns some of the most familiar names in sound. The portable speaker says JBL. The studio microphone says AKG. The tasteful orb in a living room says Harman Kardon. A Lexus may advertise Mark Levinson, while a BMW carries Bowers & Wilkins. Behind those badges sits a Stamford, Connecticut company that also builds cockpit computers, vehicle software, panoramic displays, telematics and driver-monitoring systems. HARMAN is easy to hear and surprisingly hard to see.

That invisibility is useful. HARMAN can sell a $100 speaker to a shopper, a six-figure sound system to a venue and a multi-year electronics program to an automaker without asking the corporate brand to do the persuading. What travels between those businesses is the engineering: the study of how people perceive sound, the industrial craft of making hardware survive its environment and the software required to keep increasingly complicated systems coherent.

A receiver was the first act of integration

The story begins in 1953, when Sidney Harman and Bernard Kardon formed Harman Kardon. Their early insight was less romantic than the hi-fi mythology that followed: people did not necessarily want separate tuners, amplifiers and control units. They wanted good sound in a manageable object. The Festival D1000 receiver put multiple components into one enclosure. That instinct - combine specialist parts, hide the complexity and improve the experience - still describes much of the company.

HARMAN acquired JBL in 1969, the year JBL transducers helped power Woodstock. It bought Soundcraft in 1988 and Becker Radio in 1995. By then, sound had become a route into the car as well as the living room and concert hall. Samsung bought the modern HARMAN International for $8 billion in 2017, retaining its workforce, headquarters and brands. The acquisition gave Samsung an immediate position in automotive electronics, a market where supplier relationships and validation histories take years to reproduce.

The scale is no longer hidden in a footnote. HARMAN says more than 50 million vehicles use its audio and connected-car systems. In March 2025, the company reported a record $45 billion backlog of awarded automotive business. That backlog is an estimate of lifetime program sales, not a stack of firm purchase orders, but it reveals the long clock of the industry. A headphone can be refreshed next season. A cockpit platform must be won, engineered, certified and supported across a vehicle generation.

The dashboard has a timing problem

Drivers carry a phone with a fast processor, familiar apps and frequent updates into a car designed years earlier. That contrast makes even an expensive new vehicle feel old. Automakers cannot simply copy the phone business. A dashboard has to tolerate heat, cold, vibration, patchy connectivity and safety rules, then remain serviceable long after a handset would have been recycled.

HARMAN's answer is the Ready portfolio, a collection of pre-developed systems that carmakers can configure instead of assembling every feature from scratch. Ready Upgrade pairs cockpit domain controllers with validated software and over-the-air updates. Ready Connect handles 4G, 5G and satellite connectivity. Ready Care watches for distraction or fatigue and can prompt an in-cabin response. Ready Aware uses connected data to warn about hazards beyond a driver's line of sight. Ready Vision QVUE places a slim, bright information surface near the base of the windshield using Samsung's display technology.

In 2026 the company pushed those parts closer together. Ready StreamShare can create up to four personal media zones in a cabin. Ready CQuence provides cloud-based development, testing and a runtime hypervisor for mixed-criticality computing. HARMAN says its update technology already reaches more than 80 million vehicles and its Type-1 hypervisor runs on more than 20 million electronic control units. The pitch is no longer one better screen or one better amplifier. It is orchestration.

Three markets, three different clocks

HARMAN's customer list starts with ordinary listeners buying headphones, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, turntables and amplifiers. It continues through musicians, producers, cinemas, hotels, houses of worship, schools, retailers, corporate offices and enormous venues. Professional installations at places such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and UBS Arena turn sound into infrastructure: it must be intelligible in a bad seat, controllable by an operator and dependable when nineteen thousand people are waiting.

Automakers are the third and strategically central group. HARMAN supplies branded audio and electronics across manufacturers that include BMW, Cadillac, Ford, Genesis, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Toyota and others. Here the company solves two problems at once. It gives a carmaker technology that is difficult to develop and validate alone, and it gives the buyer a recognizable badge that can make an option package easier to sell.

The business model changes with the room. Retail and e-commerce move branded devices. Dealers, distributors and integrators sell professional systems. Automakers award long programs that combine hardware, software, engineering and support. App marketplaces, downloadable vehicle features and ongoing updates add the possibility of revenue after the car leaves the factory. In each case, HARMAN earns money by reducing a different kind of uncertainty: Will this sound good? Will it work in this venue? Will it pass validation and remain current?

A moat built from awkward combinations

Competitors can match HARMAN one aisle at a time. Bose, Sony, Sonos, Sennheiser and specialist hi-fi makers compete for listeners. Bosch, Continental, Aptiv, Panasonic Automotive and Visteon compete for vehicle systems. QSC, Yamaha, Shure and others meet it in professional AV. The harder task is copying the overlap: consumer brand recognition, controlled-listening research, professional deployment, automotive-grade integration and Samsung's displays and electronics.

That combination lets an idea migrate. Directional audio can begin as acoustic research and become a warning that appears to come from a hazard. A premium listening brand can become a trim-level differentiator. A display developed with Samsung can be adapted to the brightness and durability of a windshield environment. HARMAN's useful expertise is translation, not simply invention.

The company sells sound three times: as an object, as infrastructure and as part of a moving software system.

Buy audio, sell services, add perception

Three transactions in 2025 made the strategy unusually legible. HARMAN paid $350 million for Sound United, adding Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, Polk Audio, Definitive Technology, HEOS, Classé and Boston Acoustics. It then completed the sale of its roughly 7,000-person Digital Transformation Solutions unit to Wipro, trimming a broad engineering-services business while keeping a multi-year relationship with the buyer.

In December, HARMAN agreed to buy ZF's advanced driver-assistance systems business for €1.5 billion. The deal, expected to close in the second half of 2026 subject to approvals, would bring smart cameras, radar, ADAS software and automotive compute, plus about 3,750 employees. The logic is that perception and cockpit experience are converging. A car that knows what is happening around it can decide what to show, what to say and where a warning should sound.

There are risks in the tidy story. A huge stable of audio brands can produce overlap and channel conflict. Automakers are trying to own more software and customer data themselves. Big technology companies want the dashboard, while traditional suppliers are not standing still. The pending ZF integration would add thousands of people and safety-critical systems to a company already balancing very different product cultures.

Science with a sense of theater

HARMAN's public values are conventional - integrity, innovation, teamwork and respect, inclusion, excellence - but its work has a pleasing contradiction. The engineering is obsessive so the technology can disappear. The best stadium system is noticed when every word arrives clearly, not when the audience admires a line array. The best car system turns a hazard into an understandable cue without creating another distraction.

The company has accumulated three Technical Grammy Awards and, by March 2026, 807 design awards for 528 products since 2013. It also reports more prosaic work: science-based targets to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions 50 percent and Scope 3 emissions 30 percent by 2032 from a 2024 baseline; recycled materials in audio products; and lower-impact logistics. Those targets matter because almost all of its reported footprint sits in the supply chain and use of products, not in the office lights.

The through line is still the integrated receiver. Put many difficult components together. Make the controls understandable. Let someone else enjoy the result. HARMAN now performs that trick at several scales, from a pair of headphones to an arena to a car that can see, listen, speak and change after it is sold. The corporate name may remain backstage. The machinery is moving toward center stage.
