Gregory Garrabrants and the bank that outgrew its name

An engineer, a lawyer, and an investment banker walk into the same career. At Axos, Gregory Garrabrants has spent nineteen years working out what a bank can become when its delivery system keeps changing.

Picking a bank’s name sounds like the sort of task a chief executive might finish over lunch. Gregory Garrabrants brought in people with doctorates in linguistics. There were consultants, research, trademark questions, internet addresses to check, and four finalists. The survivors of this exercise were four letters: Axos. He declined to disclose the other three names. Even discarded bank names, apparently, could enjoy the privacy of a Swiss account.

The exercise, completed in 2018, makes a useful introduction to Garrabrants. Here was someone prepared to put a seemingly subjective question through a process. “The difficulty with picking names is that everybody thinks they’re an expert,” he said. He had noticed that people readily deferred to specialists about wireless technology, yet felt entirely qualified to pronounce on a corporate name. Linguistics, meet the committee.

There was a substantial business beneath the lettering. Bank of Internet USA had started operating in 2000. Garrabrants arrived seven years later. During his tenure, the institution expanded into a collection of consumer, commercial, and securities businesses. Its identity had become harder to fit inside a name that described how a customer connected to it.

A résumé with several operating systems

His preparation for this job was unusually varied. At the University of Southern California, he studied industrial and systems engineering, with a minor in economics. At Northwestern, he earned both a law degree, magna cum laude, and an MBA from Kellogg with highest distinctions. The sequence supplied several ways to examine an institution: its processes, its obligations, its financial choices.

Before graduate school, he worked in Deloitte’s financial advisory and litigation support practices. He later clerked for U.S. District Judge Steven V. Wilson. His legal experience included summer associate positions at Skadden, Munger Tolles, and Morrison & Foerster. Those are rather different rooms from a software planning meeting, although all reward attention to what a small detail might eventually cost.

McKinsey put him alongside financial-services management teams working through strategy, organizational design, and risk. Goldman Sachs brought investment banking, capital and liquidity questions, and balance-sheet advice. Before Axos, he was a senior vice president leading corporate business development at IndyMac. He also became a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the California Bar. His professional toolkit had acquired a considerable number of drawers.

“I am very intellectually curious,” he said in 2019. Looking back on the different roles, he described learning structured ways of approaching problems from intelligent colleagues. His explanation makes the résumé easier to read. Each move offered another view of financial institutions; eventually, he wanted an institution in which he could put his own view to work.

The opportunity came in October 2007. BofI Holding’s board unanimously chose him as chief executive. Chairman Jerry Englert described a candidate with a combination of strategic and financial skills. Garrabrants’s own announcement was less expansive: he was fortunate to join the team already there. The appointment placed him in charge of an existing bank, with an existing history and customers.

He would later explain that the company was small enough for him to make a substantial difference. He had presented his plans to the board in detail. By March 2008, he had also joined the boards of the parent and the bank. The consultant and adviser now had responsibility for the decisions after the presentation ended.

When the delivery method becomes ordinary

Consider the original name. At the turn of the millennium, telling people a bank lived on the internet conveyed a proposition. By 2018, much of ordinary life arrived through a screen. The old name could also suggest that personalized service was absent, Garrabrants explained during the renaming. That was an awkward implication for a business expanding the ways it served customers.

The parent became Axos Financial in September 2018; the bank became Axos Bank on October 1. The shares moved from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange under AX. Garrabrants described the brand as a closer fit for a business serving personal, business, and institutional clients. The new identity gave the institution room to explain its products without first explaining its delivery method.

A more consequential construction project had been underway behind the sign. Work on the consumer platform called Universal Digital Bank began in 2016, and it launched in summer 2018. Axos was adding products and partnerships alongside it. The combination mattered: a new name could attract attention, but the account still had to do something useful once the customer logged in.

The ambition was to make additional financial services easier to connect and offer through the platform. This is where his background starts to feel relevant to the product. A system has to accommodate new parts without making every addition a separate rebuilding exercise. The customer sees a useful choice; the institution has to arrange the machinery that makes the choice work.

The arithmetic gets bigger

The company’s longer financial record shows how much the scale changed. Consolidated assets were about $1.42 billion in fiscal 2010, $5.82 billion in 2015, and $13.85 billion in 2020. By June 2025, they were $24.78 billion. Those numbers describe the company rather than the personal achievement of any single executive, but they establish the size of the organization he was directing.

Growth also changed the contents of the business. The 2025 annual report described contributions from asset-based lending, equipment leasing, mortgage warehouse lending, and lender finance. Consumer deposits included a bundled checking-and-savings product, Axos ONE. Commercial treasury services and specialty deposit businesses supplied other channels. A bank that customers encounter through one account can contain many businesses they never see.

Verdant Commercial Capital added another connection. Axos announced the equipment-finance acquisition in September 2025 and closed it on September 30. Verdant worked with vendors and financed equipment across specialized industries. Garrabrants’s stated logic included replacing more expensive funding with deposit funding and offering other services to manufacturers and dealers. The purchase linked the financing of equipment to the broader relationships surrounding its sale.

That logic requires execution. A manufacturer, a dealer, and the eventual equipment buyer have different needs. A bank may see opportunities to serve several of them, but the relationships do not assemble themselves. The attraction is in the connections; the work sits inside each account, referral, credit decision, and system that needs to function after the acquisition announcement.

His tenure has also brought challenges to the bank’s lending approach. In June 2024, short seller Hindenburg Research alleged weak underwriting and problems in the commercial real estate portfolio. Axos disputed the report, calling it incomplete and misleading, and emphasized senior secured positions and collateral protection. The competing claims put a central banking question into public view: what risks sit behind the returns?

A growth chart offers little help with that question by itself. Loan quality, collateral, funding, and the recognition of losses need their own examination. Garrabrants’s story includes both expansion and arguments about how that expansion was achieved. An institution can become larger while remaining subject to close questions about the judgments on which its business depends.

The next constraint is the cost of building

By late 2025, he was describing another round of platform work. Axos Complete included a professional workstation for clearing and custody clients. The retail-facing platform was taking the name Axos Client Portal as its purpose broadened beyond banking. His explanation focused on getting banking products and workflows into the hands of advisers, broker-dealers, and their customers through more connected technology.

In January 2026, he returned to the economics of that work. He said Axos had often possessed more technology ideas than it could afford to develop. AI-assisted coding, he believed, could bend that cost curve. The enthusiasm had a specific object: being able to respond to customer needs more quickly while balancing the expense of development against the rest of the business.

“I am very intellectually curious.”

The next acquisition extended the theme. In July 2026, Axos agreed to buy Arc Technologies, a cash-management and capital-markets platform serving technology and growth companies. Arc brought financial software and AI capabilities; Axos brought banking products, distribution, and capital resources. The deal closed on July 20. Garrabrants described an opportunity to serve businesses across their development, with more of their financial needs connected in one offering.

The year-end figures had meanwhile reached approximately $30 billion in consolidated assets and $490.4 million in annual net income. Those are useful measures of scale. They also make a small detail from the previous year’s anniversary reflection more striking. In recalling the people behind Axos, Garrabrants remembered a book his former secretary had kept for more than a decade.

It contained photographs of babies born to employees. She would bring it in, turn the pages with him, and tell stories about the children. He said the visits made him smile and reminded him how much it mattered to do his job well. Here was another record of growth, one that needed neither a ticker symbol nor a financial chart.

There is a place for the bell, the balance sheet, and the carefully researched name. The album supplies a quieter ending. After the advisers have left and the new software has shipped, people still have to live with the results of the decisions. The engineer’s problem keeps acquiring more human dimensions.
