Blue Shipped a Keyboard. It's Really Building a Way to Run Your Phone by Voice.

The Y Combinator S25 startup, founded by veterans of Google Assistant, Google DeepMind, and Apple Vision Pro, is starting with the most repeated action on a phone - typing - and aiming at something much larger.

If you download the Blue app today, you get a keyboard. Not a robot, not a chatbot with a personality, not a floating orb. A keyboard. You tap the little globe icon, start talking, and the words you say arrive as clean, punctuated text - a text message, an email, a note. The company's whole marketing promise fits on one line: it is faster to speak than to type. About four times faster, Blue says.

That is a modest thing to sell. It is also a deliberate one. Because the company behind that keyboard, a Y Combinator Summer 2025 startup called Blue, is not really in the dictation business. It is trying to build the thing every voice assistant has promised and none has delivered: a way to tell your phone what to do and have it actually go do it.

The ProductWhat Blue actually does

There are two Blues, and the gap between them is the story. The first is live right now: the Blue Smart Dictation Keyboard for iPhone, available on the App Store and powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT. You install it as a system keyboard, and instead of typing you speak. The model does the cleanup - turning half-formed spoken thoughts into text that reads like you meant to write it. The pitch is speed. Thumbs are slow; talking is not.

The second Blue is the one the founders talk about when they describe why the company exists. It is a small USB-C dongle that plugs into your iPhone, paired with an app. You say what needs doing - send a follow-up, reply to a thread, book something - and Blue opens the right app, does the work, and tells you when it is finished. The company describes it plainly as the only voice assistant on iOS that can control every app on your phone. Internally, they have called it a next-generation Siri competitor.

The keyboard, in other words, is the front door. It is the product people will install, open, and use dozens of times a day. The dongle and the app-controlling assistant are what all that daily use is meant to lead toward.

It helps to be precise about what "control every app" means, because the phrase gets thrown around loosely. Blue is not describing a smarter search box or a assistant that hands you off to another app and wishes you luck. It is describing software that performs the taps and swipes itself - the kind of operating-a-screen behavior that until recently only a person could do. That is why the company frames its work around computer-use rather than conversation. The talking is the easy half.

The ProblemThe thing that killed a decade of assistants

Voice assistants have been able to hear you for a long time. Say "reply to Sarah, tell her I'm running late" to almost any of them and the transcription will be perfect. The failure has never been in the listening. It is in the doing - actually opening Messages, finding the right Sarah, composing the line, and sending it without you touching the screen.

That gap is where Siri, the early Google Assistant, and a graveyard of startups have stalled. They answer questions well and take actions badly. Blue's bet is that the model layer has finally gotten good enough to close that gap, and that the company that closes it first - on the device a billion people already carry - wins something large.

There is a reason the doing is so much harder than the hearing. Answering a question is a single step: you ask, the model replies. Completing a task is a chain - open the app, wait for it to load, find the right contact, handle the pop-up, notice the send button moved, recover when something goes wrong. Each link is a chance to fail, and a chain is only as reliable as its weakest one. That is the engineering problem Blue is really taking on, and it is why the company is willing to start with a keyboard rather than promise the full chain on day one.

Starting narrow is part of the plan. Blue says its assistant will be best at messaging and email at launch - not everything, not yet. Those are the two places where typing on a phone is most frequent and most annoying, which makes them the most honest place to prove that "the doing" works before promising it for all 200 apps on your home screen.

The TeamWho is building it

Blue's founders have spent their careers inside exactly the systems they are now trying to out-build. Omar Abdelaziz, the co-founder and CEO, spent more than half a decade leading teams on Google Assistant and at Scale AI, and he holds one of the world's first patents in LLM-based computer-use - the technical heart of getting a model to operate software the way a person would.

Peter Krogh, a co-founder, spent two decades designing voice-first dialog systems and was most recently a design lead at Google DeepMind working on Gemini Live's actions - the difference between a chatbot that talks and one that reaches into apps. Muhammad Farhan Hossain, the third co-founder, is a hardware and manufacturing engineer who was on the early Apple Vision Pro team and shepherded prototypes into production. That combination - voice, LLM computer-use, and consumer hardware at scale - is unusual, and it maps neatly onto a company that has to ship both an app and a physical dongle.

The StrategyWhy a keyboard first

It would be easy to read "we shipped a keyboard" as a retreat from "we are building an AI that runs your phone." It is closer to the opposite. A keyboard is one of the highest-frequency surfaces on a device. People touch it hundreds of times a day, mostly without thinking. Siri, by contrast, is something most people reach for only when they are driving or desperate.

Win the keyboard and you win a place in the daily habit loop. Every dictated message is a small proof that speaking to your phone is faster and less annoying than tapping - and every one of those sessions is a data point and a relationship the company can build on when the larger assistant arrives. It is the patient version of a very ambitious plan: earn the everyday behavior first, then extend it from "type this for me" to "do this for me."

There is also a hard truth about consumer AI buried in the choice. Demos are cheap and habits are expensive. A flashy assistant that impresses once and gets deleted is worth less than a plain tool someone opens without thinking on a Tuesday afternoon. By leading with the least glamorous surface on the phone, Blue is optimizing for retention over applause - a trade that rarely makes for a good launch tweet but tends to make for a better company.

The MarketWhere Blue fits

On one side sit the platform assistants - Apple's Siri and on-device dictation, Google's Assistant and Gemini. They own the operating system and the microphone, which is an advantage Blue cannot match, but they have also spent years training people to expect very little from them. On the other side sit fast-moving voice-input apps like Wispr Flow, which have shown there is real demand for dictation that is quicker and cleaner than what the phone ships with.

Blue is positioned between the two and pointed past both. It enters through the same door as the dictation apps - a better keyboard - but its ambition is the assistant territory the platforms have failed to hold. The wager is that being independent lets Blue move faster than Apple or Google on the hard part, the acting, while a physical dongle gives it a foothold the pure-software competitors do not have.

The BusinessModel, money, and what's next

Blue is a consumer company. The dictation keyboard reaches people through the App Store, with an early-access program running at heyblue.com and a subscription referenced in the company's materials. The USB-C dongle and its companion app form the longer-term commercial layer - hardware plus software, sold to people who type on their phones all day. On the money side, the picture is early: Blue has raised a seed round of roughly $130,000, and Y Combinator is the named backer from the S25 batch, with partner Tyler Bosmeny listed as the group lead.

The company is small - a senior founding team rather than a large staff - and its public footprint is deliberately narrow. There is a keyboard you can install, a waitlist you can join, and a promise about what comes next. What Blue is asking people to do is start speaking to their phones for the small stuff, and to keep the habit long enough that the bigger product has somewhere to land.

Whether that arrives on schedule is the open question. Plenty of well-credentialed teams have looked at the same gap between hearing and doing and decided it was a decade away. Blue's answer is to not wait for the whole thing - to ship the piece that works today, use it to earn a place on the keyboard row, and build the assistant in public from there. It is a quieter plan than "we are replacing Siri," and probably a smarter one.
