Contact Center Mobile SDKs Need a Harder Audition

Your support SDK becomes part of your app’s reputation. Put UJET, Zendesk and Intercom through six practical tests before you put one in your customers’ hands.

Picture a customer opening your retail app to report a damaged delivery. She types the order number, uploads a photograph and asks for a call. The agent answers with a question: “What seems to be the problem?” The photograph has disappeared. Her patience follows it.

A sales demonstration can make every button look obliging. A buyer’s evaluation must discover what happens between the buttons. When customers seek help inside your app, the contact center mobile SDK becomes part of the product they judge. Its failures wear your name.

The gap is already visible. UJET’s June 2025 research, drawing on 200 retail CX leaders across the U.S. and Europe, reported that 67% of retailers had not digitized customer service for the mobile phone era. Treat that as a dated survey finding, then investigate your own experience. Start with six tests and insist on evidence from your app.

01 / Make both phones earn their place

Give iOS and Android separate auditions. Ask the vendor for its supported operating systems, release history, upgrade instructions and known limitations. Have your developers integrate the proposed production SDK into a representative build; a polished sample app cannot reveal conflicts with your navigation, permissions or dependencies.

Walk through the ordinary inconveniences: large text, a screen reader, a rotated screen, a denied microphone request, an incoming call and an app reopened from a notification. Repeat on older devices your customers actually use. Check that back navigation returns to the right place and that support does not trap someone outside checkout.

Your acceptance evidence should include the device matrix, accessibility findings, integration effort and the owner of each unresolved defect. “Available on both platforms” is the beginning of the examination.

02 / Measure the baggage

Build the same app with and without the SDK. Compare download and installed size, cold launch, responsiveness, memory, battery use and crash behavior. Agree acceptable budgets with the app team before the vendor sees the results. A threshold invented after the demonstration is a compliment disguised as a test.

UJET says each SDK adds about 8 MB to the app-store download and that every release is tested for memory leakage. Those are useful claims to verify in your own builds, rather than universal performance guarantees.

Open and close support repeatedly, attach media, background the app and resume it. Profile memory across those cycles. Keep a baseline build and a written rollback route. Ask how quickly the supplier investigates a crash and whether you can disable a troublesome release without waiting for the next full app rollout.

03 / Escalate the problem, keep the evidence

Return to the damaged delivery. Put the order identifier, chat history and photograph into the conversation, then move to voice. Ask the receiving agent to explain the problem before the customer does. That small reversal makes missing context painfully obvious.

UJET describes chat-to-phone transitions that retain context; its omnichannel offering also describes presenting customer context when a call connects. Verify the actual journey with your routing rules, agent workspace and account configuration.

Try a second agent, a callback and a temporary network interruption. Record which fields, messages and attachments survive each handoff, and when they become visible. Separate a supported path from a path that requires custom integration. A conversation should travel with its evidence; the customer should not have to act as its courier.

THE BUYER’S RULE

04 / Look inside the CRM

The demonstration is only halfway over when the agent smiles. Open the CRM record. Check that the conversation belongs to the correct customer, that the order identifier is searchable and that the media is accessible to the next authorized agent.

UJET’s mobile SDK page describes passing app context into CRM records and storing media and event data there. Ask to see that behavior in your chosen CRM, including permissions, retention and deletion workflows. A connector logo tells you very little about the record it creates.

Test a returning customer, two customers with similar names and a failed write. Decide which system owns the record, how duplicate events are handled and how support staff discover integration failures. Leave with a field map and a trace of one complete interaction. Buying integration means buying its behavior on an untidy Tuesday.

05 / Verify a person, then end their session

Authentication deserves its own script. UJET offers device-based verification using Face ID or a fingerprint. Zendesk documents server-issued JWTs for authenticated messaging; Intercom’s iOS documentation likewise describes JWT-based Messenger security. These describe different parts of the identity journey, so do not score them as interchangeable features.

Ask how your signed-in app user maps to the support identity, what a biometric check authorizes and what the agent sees after success. Then test cancellation, unavailable biometrics, an expired credential, logout and an account switch on a shared phone.

The pass condition is explicit: the right person reaches the right history, verification status is clear, and the next account cannot inherit the previous customer’s conversation. Have the security owner review credential handling and fallback behavior. A graceful login is pleasant; a clean logout is essential.

06 / Send the photograph while the call is live

A broken hinge is easier to show than to describe. During a voice session, capture a photograph and send a short video. Confirm that the agent receives usable media and that the call continues. Distinguish sending a recorded clip from a live video call; require whichever your service actually needs.

UJET says its SDK supports sending and receiving photos and videos without disconnecting a call. Put that promise through poor connectivity, permission denial, an oversized attachment and an interrupted upload. Look for useful progress messages, recoverable errors and a clear way to cancel.

Check the saved CRM record afterward. The evidence must remain available under the permissions you agreed. Record file limits, compression, supported formats and retention. A camera button is merely an invitation; the test ends when the agent can use what arrives.

Give every vendor the same scene

Put UJET, Zendesk and Intercom on the same evaluation sheet. Zendesk’s documentation lists separate Messaging and Talk SDKs for iOS and Android. Intercom documents native mobile Messenger installation. Ask each supplier which products, licenses and integration work deliver your complete chat-to-voice journey. Do not infer an end-to-end capability from the presence of an SDK.

Use one customer scenario, one device matrix and one evidence standard. Grade each requirement as demonstrated, dependent on additional work, or unproven. Keep price alongside the engineering cost, agent workflow and ongoing release burden. Leave empty cells empty until someone supplies proof.

Bring the app engineer, contact center lead, CRM owner and security reviewer to the final session. Each should sign off on the behavior they will inherit. Then replay the damaged-delivery case from opening the app to closing the record. The best audition ends with the customer explaining herself once.

Questions worth asking

How do you evaluate a contact center mobile SDK?

Test iOS and Android usability, app size and performance, chat-to-voice context, CRM records, authentication and media sharing in a representative build of your own app.

How much size does UJET’s mobile SDK add?

UJET says each iOS or Android SDK adds about 8 MB to the app-store download. Measure the actual difference in your own release build.

Can UJET share photos and videos during a voice call?

UJET says its SDK can send and receive photos and videos without disconnecting the call. Test delivery, error handling and CRM access in your configuration.

What should a chat-to-voice escalation test include?

Include a customer identifier, chat history and attachment. Check that the receiving agent can access the relevant context without asking the customer to repeat it.

How should buyers compare UJET, Zendesk and Intercom?

Run the same customer scenario and device matrix for all three. Confirm the exact SDKs, licenses and integrations needed, and record each requirement as demonstrated, dependent on additional work, or unproven.
