Sophia Says

"My music has always been very personal...I have no choice. It's vulnerable just to sing, or to make something."

"People are always messaging me saying I'm 'like if Ethel Cain and 070 Shake had a baby,' and I think that's kind of true."

"I had a flip phone for years, and that was the only game I really had on there. I could never win, so I googled it - and the advice was something super abstract, like 'Move your cards with intention.'"

On naming her second EP

"I'm not much of a perfectionist, I just want it to be listenable."

On her production philosophy

"I need to be present in my life and pay attention to the things around me in order to write about them."

On why she uses a flip phone

"You have to treat everything as a big deal, take every little celebration."

"I try to keep things the same as they always have been, creating music for an audience of no one, just for myself."

Things Worth Knowing

  • She built a studio inside a nightclub basement - disassembling it before doors opened every night - to record her second EP.
  • The Instagram handle @insignificantfunds is a comment on the economic reality of being a self-funded DIY artist.
  • Her vocal chain uses Fresh Air - a free plugin. She doesn't lean on heavy EQ or compression on purpose.
  • She made the "You Could Hate Me" video with friends at a beach - just 4 days before the song's release.
  • Friends actively discourage her from cutting her hair. This has become a minor recurring detail in interviews.
  • She aspires to eventually score films. The whole "best album of all time" thing she says with characteristic deadpan understatement.
  • Despite 8.6M streams on one song, she still lives with two of her brothers in Vancouver.
