RAILBED / PAYMENTS & PERMISSION

Railbed Welcomes Legal Sellers. Providers Can Still Say No

A lawful business can still lose its route to payment. Railbed’s rules reveal where platform eligibility ends and the card provider’s decision begins.

Imagine the shop is ready. The product is lawful, the price is clear, the first customer has arrived. Then the payment service declines the business. The merchant reaches for the obvious defence: “But it’s legal.” In payments, that is the beginning of the conversation.

Railbed pitches itself to businesses other processors turn away. Its acceptable-use policy, updated 5 October 2026, welcomes several categories that often encounter restrictions. Read the conditions, though, and the welcome becomes more precise: goods must be lawful where the merchant operates and where each buyer lives, while the providers and card networks involved impose rules of their own.

There are three decisions here. The law decides whether the sale is permitted. Railbed decides whether the business fits its platform. The independent provider decides whether to handle the payment. A yes at one desk cannot sign for the others.

THE THREE TESTS Each has its own decision-maker
  1. 01
Is the sale lawful?Product · seller location · buyer location
  2. 02
Does Railbed allow it?Category conditions · rights · verification
  3. 03
Will the provider accept it?Independent terms · identity checks · network rules

Passing one test does not settle the next.

Three doors, three different keys

Stripe’s restricted-business policy makes the distinction plain. It separates prohibited activities from businesses requiring additional due diligence. Dating and matchmaking fall into the latter group, with country-specific prohibitions; adult content falls into the former. Approval for a restricted business is specific to its service offering and can be changed or withdrawn.

Square’s US payment terms take another route. Its unsupported-industries section includes betting, adult entertainment, certain membership and subscription activities, and remote sales of age-restricted products. Square also says it, its processor or acquiring bank may decide an applicant cannot use the service. A business licence does not settle that decision.

Railbed’s own policy expressly allows providers to apply tighter restrictions. That matters more than any cheerful category list. Platform eligibility describes who may use the software; provider acceptance determines whether the proposed transaction can proceed.

A bottle, a buyer, a border

For supplements and nutraceuticals, Railbed’s welcome depends on lawful sales and medical claims the law permits. A seller cannot turn a capsule into a promised cure merely by finding a checkout willing to display it. The general ban on deceptive advertising applies alongside the category conditions.

Hemp and CBD products must be legal where sold. Read that with the opening rule: both the business’s location and the buyer’s location count. A lawful home market is no passport for the next destination. Any legally required age or consent checks remain the merchant’s responsibility.

Vape and e-cigarette sellers have more explicit conditions: products must be lawful, buyers must meet the legal age, and sellers must satisfy applicable age checks, registrations and taxes in their own and their customers’ locations. The policy offers conditional access, not a universal age threshold or a worldwide product clearance.

Consent cannot be supplied at checkout

Adult creators, platforms and apps face a different set of questions. Railbed requires consenting adults, performer age and consent verification, and buyer age gates where required. It prohibits sexual material involving minors and sexual depictions of people without their consent. The content and the people represented in it matter as much as the merchant’s business registration.

For an adult AI app, calling the output synthetic does not answer those questions. The same policy’s prohibitions on sexual content involving minors and people depicted without consent still set boundaries. A fictional companion and an unauthorised sexual depiction of a real person present different issues; the category label cannot erase that distinction.

The policy does not publish a complete technical verification standard for every AI model or creator workflow. What it does establish is the seller’s responsibility to satisfy the applicable consent, age and legal conditions before accepting payment.

Dating sells a different promise

An adults-only dating service may sell introductions, membership access, profile boosts or message credits. Those offers should be assessed on their actual features. Treating every dating purchase as adult content misses both the product and the separate scrutiny that dating businesses face.

Railbed’s dating page describes memberships sold as passes and boosts purchased through checkout. It also says cards are not automatically rebilled: when a pass expires, the member chooses whether to pay again. That detail belongs in the offer. A monthly pass and an automatically renewing subscription create different expectations.

Explicit content adds another layer. Railbed’s dating page directs platforms allowing it to the adult-content requirements. The sensible reading is cumulative: adult dating eligibility does not excuse missing performer verification where the service also hosts adult content, and a payment provider retains its own acceptance decision.

A DETAIL THAT CHANGES THE OFFERA monthly pass ≠ an automatic rebill

Railbed’s dating page says members choose each renewal. Describe that choice accurately.

A gaming licence has edges

For iGaming and gambling, Railbed requires licences covering the markets served and buyers located in those markets. Its prohibited-use list separately bars gambling without the required licences. A licence is therefore tied to the actual operation and audience, rather than a decorative badge on the homepage.

Consider an operator authorised in one market. Connecting its checkout does not enlarge that authorisation or make customers elsewhere eligible. Before opening another territory, the operator must establish that its licences cover that market and that it can lawfully serve those buyers.

A payment connection cannot confer permission to operate. Railbed may request information about products, licences and verification processes, and merchants must answer promptly and truthfully. It can stop future payments or close accounts for policy breaches. The licence folder needs to survive more than a glance.

The promise survives the payment

Courses and coaching get their own test: describe the offer honestly, and support any income or results claims. A polished sales page cannot make evidence appear. The acceptable-use policy also bars scams, fake reviews and misrepresentation, so the claims around the course count alongside the lessons inside it.

Digital-goods sellers must have the right to sell their inventory. Railbed explicitly excludes stolen keys, hacked accounts and fraudulently obtained items. Possessing a code does not establish permission to resell it; the merchant needs a legitimate basis for the sale.

Then comes the dissatisfied customer. Railbed’s terms put refunds on the merchant: publish a policy that complies with the laws where you sell, disclose it and honour it. The software’s inability to reverse a settled payment does not extinguish the seller’s obligation to return money when required.

Follow the money to the decision

Railbed’s terms describe software connecting buyers to independent, licensed on-ramp providers. Those providers charge the buyer and convert the payment to USDC; a payment infrastructure partner forwards it to the merchant’s Polygon wallet. Railbed says it does not itself charge cards or hold the funds.

That division explains the remaining checks. Providers independently decide whether to accept payments or request identification. Routing recommends a provider; it guarantees neither acceptance nor an exemption from ID. Helping buyers evade checks or splitting payments to dodge limits is prohibited.

Card disputes remain with the provider under its own and the networks’ rules. Merchants still own delivery, product legality and refunds. Before launching, establish what you may sell, whom you may sell it to and who will carry the payment. Then make the offer match the evidence. A checkout button is a useful servant. It is a poor character witness.

THE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Before you open checkout

Does being legal guarantee payment-provider approval?

No. Legality, Railbed eligibility and independent provider acceptance are separate decisions. Providers may apply stricter rules or decline payments.

Can supplements, CBD and vape sellers use Railbed?

Railbed welcomes qualifying lawful sellers. Products must be legal in merchant and buyer locations, with required age checks and other obligations met. Supplements cannot carry unlawful medical claims; provider rules also apply.

Do adult creators and dating apps face the same conditions?

Their obligations depend on their actual services. Adult content requires consenting adults, performer age and consent verification, and buyer age gates where required. Adult dating services hosting explicit content must also address the adult-content conditions.

Does connecting Railbed let an iGaming operator enter new markets?

No. Operators need licences covering the markets they serve and must accept only buyers in those markets. Checkout access does not extend a licence.

Who is responsible for refunds after a Railbed payment?

The merchant must disclose and honour a refund policy compliant with the laws where it sells. Railbed’s inability to reverse settlement does not remove refund obligations; card disputes are handled by the on-ramp provider.
