The Dispatch
In the fall of 2023, a 13-pound book landed on the world's coffee tables. Bob Dylan: Mixing Up the Medicine ran 1,100 images deep into a vault almost nobody had seen - the Bob Dylan Archive, handwritten lyrics, contact sheets, scraps of a half-century. The man who pried it open had been waiting since he was twelve.
Nicholas Callaway saw Dylan play the Academy of Music in Philadelphia in 1966, on the eve of the tour D.A. Pennebaker filmed for Dont Look Back. He has called Dylan his "North Star" ever since. The book, he says, was "58 years in the making." That is the tell. Callaway does not chase the next title. He waits for the right one and then refuses to make it small.
Today he runs Callaway Arts & Entertainment from New York, with outposts in East Hampton, Los Angeles, London, and Riyadh. The company calls itself a content and intellectual-property shop - print and e-books, computer-animated TV, mobile apps, lifestyle brands, and now the Callaway Nomadic Museum, a set of immersive, traveling experiences. The through-line across all of it: take something rare, reproduce it better than anyone thought possible, and make owning it feel like an occasion.
The recent catalog reads like a syllabus for the last century of culture - The Beatles: Get Back, Leonardo by Leonardo, Mark Rothko, the three-volume Sistine Chapel, then Dylan. Each one is less a book than a feat of engineering. The Nomadic Museum extends the same instinct off the page: if you can render a fresco at true scale on paper, why not build a room you can walk into?
Exhibit A
For five years, Callaway worked with the Vatican Museums and the Bologna art house Scripta Maneant on a single object. A team climbed a 33-foot scaffold and photographed Michelangelo's ceiling across 67 consecutive nights - the only hours the chapel sits empty - capturing every inch in gigapixel detail.
The result: an 822-page set, 24 by 17 inches, color-matched against the actual frescoes so the printed plates read at true life-scale. Botticelli, Perugino, and Michelangelo at the size their makers intended. Only 1,999 copies exist worldwide - 600 of them in English - and there will never be a reprint. The price tag, famously, is $22,000, and you cannot return it.
It is the kind of project that sounds like vanity until you hold it. Then it sounds like the only sane way to do it.

Three Bets That Paid
Madonna's most notorious book arrived sealed in Mylar with an aluminum cover. It moved roughly 1.4 million copies and became the best-selling illustrated book of its time. Theater, bound.
A children's tea party by David Kirk became 5 million books, 70+ titles, a Nick Jr. series, and a Target aisle. Proof that Callaway's eye worked at any age.
An interactive iPad version of that 1994 spider book caught Apple's attention. Kleiner Perkins funded Callaway Digital Arts; every app it shipped reached #1, including Endless Alphabet.
Exhibit B
For most of the 1980s and 1990s, Callaway's reputation was built on weight - on books you needed two hands to lift. Then the iPad arrived, and he did something publishers of luxury objects almost never do. He went weightless.
The hinge was that 1994 spider. An interactive iPad version of Miss Spider's Tea Party caught the attention of Apple, and the interest ran straight to the top: Steve Jobs himself took notice. In August 2010, with an investment from Kleiner Perkins, Callaway founded Callaway Digital Arts, opening in New York and San Francisco to build children's apps for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad.
The discipline that made the books work translated cleanly to the screen. Callaway Digital Arts shipped interactive titles with marquee partners - Sesame Street: The Monster at the End of This Book, Thomas & Friends, and the widely loved vocabulary game Endless Alphabet. The scoreboard was unambiguous: every Callaway Digital Arts app reached #1 in its category. In 2012 he co-founded Happy Studio and launched the Martha Stewart CraftStudio app, pushing the same craft-first instinct into a new medium again.
It was a reminder that Callaway's real product was never the paper. It was the standard - and the standard travels.

Long before the apps and the museums, Callaway built a list that few houses could match for sheer ambition. His imprint specialized in the design, production, and publication of high-quality illustrated books on art, design, fashion, and photography - and the names attached tell the story better than any mission statement.

Range like this is rare for a reason. It demands a publisher willing to learn an entirely new subject for every project, and a temperament that treats a children's bedtime story and a 9/11 visual history with the same seriousness. The list also explains the bankruptcy headlines that occasionally followed the company - Callaway Arts & Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 along the way - because making the most expensive, most ambitious version of an object is a high-wire act by design. He kept walking the wire anyway, and the books kept arriving.
