Mawaad Environmental Services The steel industry's leftovers, reborn as roads.

Every ton of steel produced leaves behind a stubborn residue: slag, the glassy, mineral by-product skimmed off molten metal. For most of the industry's history, slag was a disposal problem - hauled away, piled up, buried. Mawaad Environmental Services looked at the same material and saw inventory.

Founded in 2018 by Ismail Fahmy and headquartered in Dubai's Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Mawaad (MES) is a materials processing and resource-recovery company. Its business is deceptively simple to describe and hard to execute: take the slag and by-products off a steel producer's hands, recover the metal still trapped inside, and refine what remains into graded construction materials that builders actually want to buy.

The company's tagline - "minimizing waste, maximizing value" - is less slogan than operating instruction. In the first half of 2021 alone, MES reported processing and selling 300,000 tons of steel slag, keeping it out of landfill and out of the quarry pipeline at the same time.

The pitch to a steel mill is not charity. It is: let us pay you, or relieve you of a cost, for something you were going to throw away. That reframing - from liability to revenue line - is the whole idea.

Fahmy came to slag from clean energy. He spent about 15 years in renewables before founding Mawaad - including a stint as a Programme Officer at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and as Managing Director at Dii, the Desertec initiative to bridge renewable power across continents.

That background frames the company's thesis: even the cleanest energy still sits on top of a heavy, waste-generating industrial base. If you want measurable environmental impact, the volume is in the waste stream - and Fahmy went where the tonnage was.
