Before a building can rise, someone often has to make the water leave. The work begins below the future lobby, beneath the parking garage and under the clean geometry of the architect's rendering. Groundwater follows its own schedule. Marcus Gwynn has made a career inside that quiet contest between the construction plan and the ground as it actually exists.
Gwynn is a Maryland construction operator at Griffin Fluid Management, the company long known as Griffin Dewatering. Public listings have described him first as an equipment manager and, more recently, as branch manager for Maryland. The change in title suggests a wider circle of responsibility, but the heart of the job remains practical: help turn an engineered idea into a site that is ready to work.
That means pumps, wells, treatment equipment, pipe and people. It also means the arrangements surrounding them: a bid won, a permit in hand, material sourced, a delivery made and a crew able to begin. None of this arrives with a ribbon cutting. The operating system under the jobsite
Construction dewatering sounds like a single action, rather as surgery sounds like a person holding one shiny instrument. In practice, it is a system designed around soil, depth, groundwater and discharge requirements. Shallow excavations can use closely spaced wellpoints connected to a common header. Deeper work may require individual deep wells with submersible pumps. Water that picks up iron, sediment or other contaminants may need treatment before it can be discharged.
Gwynn's public project record sits at the junction of those technical choices and the physical world. Colleagues have credited him with Griffin's Beltsville business-development, project and operations teams on work across the Washington region. One project near Audi Field called for 18 deep wells, each extending 60 feet, tied into roughly 1,200 feet of HDPE header pipe. Another in Falls Church used 30 deep wells and about 1,000 feet of header to support a residential and retail development with two levels of underground parking.
These figures are more than construction numerology. Every well represents drilling, placement, power and connection. Every foot of header has to reach the site and fit the system. A project manager may see a critical path; an operator sees the collection of objects and decisions that make the path real.
Buzzard Point, measured twice
At Buzzard Point, the water problem required 17 gravel-packed wells, two piezometers and a treatment system. The sequence is worth noticing. Griffin's team first tested water from an existing monitoring well to understand what treatment would be required. The design included iron sequestration while keeping both cost and physical footprint contained. Once part of the dewatering system was installed, the team ran a pump test and gathered more water-quality data to sharpen the expected flow rate.
Testing continued while installation advanced, avoiding a separate pause in the work. Gwynn was among the Beltsville team members publicly thanked for their contribution. It is a small window into his world: learn enough to begin, keep measuring, and refine the plan without losing the day.
The piezometers in that system did not remove water. They measured pressure. That distinction makes them a useful emblem for operations. Good management is not merely force applied in the desired direction. It also needs a way to know whether the ground is responding.
Ambition meets inventory
Gwynn's path did not begin and end at the equipment yard. He attended Bowie State University. He was also CEO and co-founder of Why You? LLC, an entrepreneurial venture that left a brief public trace in a 2016 LinkedIn article called “New Client Alert!” The article began with a dictionary-style definition: “AMBITION - A strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.”
There is an appealing distance between that sentence and the later project work. Ambition is a large word. Equipment is specific. A pump has a capacity. A pipe has a diameter. A truck has an arrival time. The career of an operator is where a desire to achieve something is forced, usefully, to meet inventory.

The founder chapter and the construction chapter need not be treated as opposites. Both ask the same adult question: can an idea survive contact with detail? At Griffin, detail includes fleet readiness and project preparation. A colleague's project recap thanked Gwynn and teammates for “relentlessly bidding & winning projects” and making sure permits, materials and equipment were handled. That line is nearly a job description for turning commercial promise into field reality.
His public profile also records a volunteer role as a mentor with Howard County Public Schools. There is no elaborate manifesto attached to it. The plain fact is enough. Mentoring, like equipment management, is enabling work. Its best result happens later, often outside the helper's view.
A short tribute says plenty
Construction companies contain unusually long institutional memories. When Griffin celebrated Larry Duhaime's 63-year career and the expertise he had shared with colleagues, Gwynn left a three-word response in capital letters: “THE GOAT!!!” It is not a polished executive quotation, which is precisely why it lands. The comment recognizes mastery without dressing it up.
Another public note, written when a colleague moved on to a new role, praised her willingness to teach and assist. Taken together, the moments show Gwynn participating in the ordinary social maintenance of a working team: honor experience, thank the teacher, mark the departure. A fleet can be inventoried. Knowledge travels person to person.
That matters in groundwater control, where a drawing cannot anticipate every stubborn fact beneath a site. Soil changes. Flow differs from an estimate. Water quality adds treatment needs. The useful organization combines engineering with people who recognize what the instruments and the excavation are saying.
The dignity of readiness
Griffin has operated since 1934. Its modern scope stretches across dewatering, treatment, sewer bypass, mechanical flushing and specialist rentals. Gwynn's work in Maryland belongs to that larger system, but its scale is still local and immediate: a branch, a jobsite, a piece of equipment that needs to be there.
There is a temptation to make leadership abstract as responsibility grows. Operations refuses. The higher the role, the more expensive a forgotten coupling can become. The branch manager inherits the same physical truth that faced the equipment manager: water moves, machines wear, deliveries take time, and optimism is not a backup pump.
This is why Gwynn's public career feels instructive despite its low volume. It offers no grand personal mythology. It shows an expanding radius of practical responsibility. Founder. Equipment manager. Branch manager. Mentor. Team member thanked alongside others after complicated work. The story is not about appearing indispensable. It is about building conditions in which a project can continue.
Equipment leadership also has a peculiar relationship with time. The fleet is accumulated experience made physical. A high-flow pump belongs to jobs where volume is the problem. A high-pressure pump answers a different demand. Submersibles live down in the work; wellpoint pumps pull through a connected field of small wells. Treatment vessels, flowmeters and separators solve problems that appear only after water starts moving. Keeping those categories straight is not clerical neatness. It is how a branch preserves options before the next set of site data arrives.
Then comes maintenance, the less photogenic twin of preparedness. Pumps work around sediment, weather and long operating hours. Hoses, fittings and engines cannot be assumed ready merely because they are present. For someone whose career has crossed equipment management and branch responsibility, the fleet is both balance sheet and promise. A rented machine carries the company's word to the field. It must arrive as the right answer, not simply as available inventory.
The same discipline applies to water treatment. Moving groundwater out of an excavation is only half a solution when the discharge has to meet a permit. Flow and chemistry can change the system, which is why sampling and monitoring mattered at Buzzard Point. Operations becomes a loop: observe, choose, deploy, measure, adjust. It is not glamorous, but glamour is a poor instrument for reading a piezometer.
The finished building will eventually hide the wells. The header pipe will leave the site. The treatment tanks will move to another job. People will park below grade, walk into the lobby and never wonder how the ground stayed stable long enough for the structure to be made. For an operator, that forgetfulness is not an insult. It may be the cleanest proof that the work did what it was supposed to do.
