DAIVIN! makes breathable oxygen out of the water around you. One founder, one very stubborn idea, and a bet that air is an energy problem - not a logistics one.
A scuba tank is a promise you make to yourself before you get in the water: this much air, no more. When it runs low, the dive is over, no matter what you were doing down there. DAIVIN!, a one-person deep-tech company in San Francisco, looked at that promise and asked a blunt question - why carry the air at all?
The company's answer is a diving rig with no tank. Instead of hauling compressed gas, a DAIVIN! diver wears a lightweight vest and a battery belt. The vest runs electrolysis on the water passing through it, splitting H₂O into breathable oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen goes to the diver. The limit on the dive is no longer how much air fits in a cylinder - it's how much charge is left in the battery.

Air as an energy problem
The reframe is the whole company. Traditional diving treats breathable air as something you store and transport: fill a cylinder at the surface, strap it on, monitor the gauge, refill it later. DAIVIN! treats air as something you generate on the spot, given two inputs it can count on underwater - water and electricity.
Put that way, the problem stops looking like scuba and starts looking like power. That shift is what lets the founder talk about the same product reaching well past diving: high-altitude rescue, crisis-zone response, aircraft, hospitals, and eventually space, where hauling pressurized oxygen is expensive and dangerous in exactly the same way it is at 40 meters.

Why the tank is the weak link
Diving is, by one comparison the company cites, roughly a thousand times more dangerous than flying. A lot of that risk traces back to pressurized gas and the human choreography around it: managing supply, watching for narcosis and toxicity, and the plain fact that you can run out. DAIVIN!'s pitch is that removing the tank removes a whole category of failure and replaces it with something engineers know how to make redundant - a circuit.
And redundancy is where the design gets serious. DAIVIN! describes a quadruple-redundant architecture with three independent power paths per electrolyzer, so that a single failed wire doesn't stop gas generation. There's also a palm-sized emergency battery that can buy up to an extra hour of breathing, and the whole system can be recharged with solar. For life support, that layering isn't a feature list - it's the entire point.
The product, and who it's for
DAIVIN!'s flagship concept is called SPRING, which the company bills as the world's first tankless diving technology. The reachable depth in the design targets around 200 meters, or 650 feet, without the nitrogen narcosis or oxygen toxicity that shadow conventional deep dives.
The earliest customers are the people for whom air limits are a daily constraint: professional and commercial divers, elite and remote-operations teams, and responders working in crisis zones. From there the list widens to high-altitude climbers and, over a longer horizon, aviation, medical, and space applications. A quick note of honesty the company itself makes: the systems are described as conceptual and pre-launch. This is a design and a thesis at a very early stage, not a product on a shelf.
The one-person deep-tech company
DAIVIN! is, for now, a team of one. The founder, Leo Kankkunen, is an electrical engineer with about seven years in the trade and the distinction of being the youngest person in Finland to earn the country's highest national electrical certification. He's also a certified diver and a military veteran - which is to say the person building life-support gear has spent real time both under the water and around high-stakes electrical work.
That background matters because the DAIVIN! bet is essentially an electrical engineer's read on a mechanical industry. Where the dive world sees gas management, Kankkunen sees a power and circuit problem. It's the kind of cross-disciplinary angle that makes a hundred-year-old category suddenly look moveable.

The incumbents are the makers of scuba tanks, nitrox systems, closed-circuit rebreathers, and surface-supplied air for commercial diving - mature technology, refined over decades, but all built on the same premise of stored, pressurized gas. DAIVIN!'s differentiation is a single word: generation. If it works and it's safe, it doesn't just compete with a tank; it removes the reason to have one.
That's the size of the bet, and the size of the risk. Life support is unforgiving, hardware is slow, and a single founder is a thin margin for a category this serious. But the framing is clean, the redundancy thinking is right, and the market - anyone who has ever watched a pressure gauge tick down - is not small.
