The Story

A dollar figure for the thing nobody could measure

Ask a security team how safe a company is, and you usually get a chart: red, yellow, green. Ask the CFO to make a budget decision from that chart, and the conversation stalls. CyberSaint, a cybersecurity software company founded in Boston in 2016, was built around a more uncomfortable question - how many dollars of risk are we actually carrying, and which fix reduces it the most?

The answer lives in its flagship product, the CyberStrong platform. It consolidates security and compliance data, automatically scores an organization's controls against frameworks like the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and translates the result into financial terms using models such as FAIR and NIST 800-30. The pitch is not a prettier dashboard. It is a common language between the people who run security and the people who sign the checks.

CyberSaint was founded by George Wrenn, Padraic O'Reilly, and Scott Schlimmer. O'Reilly, who remains as Chief Innovation Officer, has become a recognizable voice on cyber risk quantification. Jerry Layden, who joined as chief revenue officer in 2018, stepped into the CEO seat in 2021 and has steered the company's commercial growth since.

The company describes CyberStrong as the platform for the convergence of security operations, continuous compliance, and risk management - moving customers, in its own words, "from assessment to boardroom." In March 2024 it raised a $21M Series A led by Riverside Acceleration Capital to push that model into more markets.

Products & Services

One platform, three hubs

Compliance Hub

Continuous compliance

Automated framework assessment and control scoring across NIST, CIS, ISO and more - with framework harmonization so a single answer maps to every standard, replacing the annual spreadsheet with continuous control monitoring.

Risk Hub

Risk quantification

Cyber risk expressed in financial terms using the FAIR model and NIST 800-30, plus benchmarking and scenario simulation so leaders can weigh exposure and return on security investment (ROSI).

Executive Hub

Boardroom reporting

Risk heat maps, executive dashboards, and board-ready reports that turn thousands of technical findings into a strategic narrative decision-makers can act on in minutes.

"CyberStrong enables enterprises to master their cyber risk posture and drive executive alignment by translating cyber risk into financial terms."

The Problem & The Edge

Why "82% compliant" isn't an answer

Most enterprises run a dozen overlapping frameworks and answer the same control question many times over. Assessments are done by hand, once a year, and are stale the day they ship. And when the findings pile up - tens of thousands of them - the hardest part isn't spotting problems, it's deciding what to fix first with a single budget.

CyberSaint's differentiation is to attack all three at once. It harmonizes frameworks so you answer once. It monitors controls continuously instead of annually. And it uses patented AI - built on a graph neural net engine - to rank findings by the risk-in-dollars they actually remove. Competitors such as RiskLens, SAFE Security, Balbix, Kovrr, and LogicGate each touch parts of this; CyberSaint's bet is the convergence of compliance, operations, and quantification on one platform.

Customers & Business Model

Who buys it, and how it sells

CyberSaint sells CyberStrong as B2B SaaS - annual subscriptions tiered by hubs, users, and frameworks. Its customers span energy, insurance, healthcare, travel, and financial services, and include named brands such as Duke Energy, Allstate, TripAdvisor, MDU Resources, Expeditors, and Midmark. The company says Fortune 50 titans and high-growth startups alike rely on the platform, and that customers have collectively managed tens of trillions of dollars in cyber risk through it.

The through-line across those industries is regulatory pressure and board scrutiny. As AI-driven attacks and resilience-focused regulation mount, static, manual assessments no longer satisfy auditors or directors. That macro shift - not a feature war - is the tide CyberSaint is trying to ride, and the reason its 2024 raise leaned so heavily on the word "expansion."
