Reading the slide, one algorithm at a time

A pathologist's diagnosis still begins the way it did a century ago: a thin slice of tissue on a glass slide, stained and studied under a microscope. Qritive, a Singapore healthtech company founded in 2017, is trying to make that slide smarter without asking the lab to throw out its microscope. Its software digitizes the whole-slide image, then runs artificial-intelligence modules that flag, grade and classify cancer for the pathologist to confirm.

The company was spun out of research at the National University of Singapore. Co-founder Aneesh Sathe earned a PhD in mechanobiology and built computer-vision systems to identify cancer cells; co-founder Kaveh Taghipour completed a PhD in natural-language processing. Together they framed cancer diagnosis as, in part, a machine-vision problem - and built a platform around it.

That platform is called Pantheon. It handles case management, slide viewing, synoptic reporting, telepathology and integration with lab information systems in a single window. On top of it sit the AI modules - prostate, colon, breast, gastric, lymph node metastasis and immunohistochemistry - that do the pattern recognition. The design choice that matters most is that all of it is vendor-agnostic: a lab can adopt the AI without replacing its existing scanners.

The payoff Qritive points to is consistency. In a collaborative study with Singapore General Hospital, the company's immunohistochemistry module was shown to reduce diagnostic subjectivity and discordance by 9.4 percent. In a field where two experts can grade the same slide differently, that number is the pitch.
