Billions of tonnes of plastic never reach a recycling bin. It blows out of open dumps, slips off the back of trucks and washes down rivers - what the industry calls "fugitive plastic." Polymateria's answer is not another compostable cup or a plea to recycle harder. It is a chemistry fix: a masterbatch additive that manufacturers blend into ordinary polyolefin plastics on the lines they already run.
Treated this way, a bag or a wrapper behaves normally through its useful life. If it is recycled, good. But if it escapes into the open environment, a time-controlled process kicks in. The plastic breaks down into a bioavailable wax, and microbes, bacteria and fungi consume the wax - leaving only carbon dioxide, water and biomass. Crucially, and unlike many "degradable" plastics that simply shatter into fragments, Polymateria's material is designed and independently tested to leave no microplastics behind.
That claim is the whole company. It is also why Polymateria spent years turning a lab result into an audited British Standard rather than a marketing slogan.

The problem it solves. Recycling systems miss enormous volumes of plastic, especially in regions that lack collection infrastructure and often receive exported waste. Polymateria frames its technology not as a replacement for recycling but as a safety net for the plastic that recycling never captures - designing for the failure case, not just the ideal one.
Why it is different. Oxo-degradable additives fragment plastic into microplastics; compostable bioplastics like PLA typically need industrial composting to break down and don't help litter in the wild. Polymateria's edge is real-world, open-environment biodegradation that is independently certified - and time-controlled, so the plastic stays strong until it needs to disappear.
Polymateria grew out of Imperial College London, and the deep expertise shows in where it chose to compete. Making a plastic degrade is easy; making it degrade fully, safely, in real outdoor conditions, and on a predictable schedule is hard. The team's work sits at the intersection of polymer formulation, biodegradation science and eco-toxicity testing - running the OECD eco-toxicity tests that regulators and brands look for, and proving the end products are non-toxic to soil and aquatic life rather than just invisible to the eye.
The clearest expression of that expertise is BSI PAS 9017. Rather than self-certify, Polymateria helped establish an external benchmark for the biodegradation of polyolefins in the open-air terrestrial environment - the first of its kind - and then became the first to meet it. For a young company, getting a British Standard written around a category is a rare kind of moat: rivals can imitate a marketing claim, but they cannot shortcut an audited, third-party test regime. It also reframes the whole conversation from "trust us" to "here is the certificate."

Its distinct wedge is open-environment biodegradation with third-party proof - the moat is less the claim than the audited standard that competitors cannot simply copy.
The approach has critics. Environmental groups including WWF and Keep Britain Tidy have warned that anything labelled "biodegradable" risks encouraging people to litter. Polymateria's counter is that the littering is already happening at scale - particularly where waste is exported to countries without recycling infrastructure - and that a plastic which returns safely to nature is better than one that persists for centuries. It is a genuine debate, and the company leans on its testing and certification to make the case rather than dismissing the concern.
