Hosts build a custom invite page, send it as a link, and watch the guest list fill in real time. By early 2025 it was averaging more than half a million people doing exactly that every month, in over 100 countries.
Most software wants you to open an app. Partiful just wants you to open a text.
For two decades the digital invitation was a settled, joyless category. Evite looked like 2004 and never quite left. Paperless Post charged you coins for stamps you couldn't lick. Facebook Events curdled along with Facebook. And the alternative - a sprawling group text where "who's bringing chips?" buries the actual address - was somehow worse.
The chore wasn't sending the invite. It was everything after: chasing RSVPs, re-sending the address, counting heads, fielding the same three questions, and never quite knowing who would show. Shreya Murthy and Joy Tao both went to Princeton, both spent years at Palantir, and - in a detail too tidy to invent - didn't actually meet until a mutual friend introduced them afterward. They had the engineering pedigree to build serious software. They pointed it at something most serious engineers wouldn't touch: making birthday parties easier.
Then they launched, more or less, into a global pandemic. An app about gathering people in person arriving precisely when gathering in person was banned is the kind of timing that ends most startups. Investors were skeptical of a "party-planning startup" run by two first-time female founders. The bet looked, briefly, like a punchline.

Partiful's actual innovation is mundane and total: a guest never has to install anything. The invite is a link; the RSVP is a tap; the reminders, updates, and address changes ride over text to people who never knew there was an app at all. Under that simplicity sits the full hosting toolkit - date polls, spot limits, custom questionnaires, shared photo albums after the night ends, and payment collection through Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal.
The other half of the appeal is pure personality. The cover art is the canvas. People make invites with lime-green Brat-album parodies, or a dinner party fronted by Shrek in sunglasses. It is the rare consumer app people open because they want to, not because they have to.
That distinction matters more than it looks. An invitation is a tiny act of self-expression - the first thing your guests see, before the snacks or the playlist. Older tools treated it as a form to fill out. Partiful treats it as a flyer for a night that hasn't happened yet. The result is that hosts spend a few extra minutes fussing over a cover photo not because they have to, but because it's the fun part. Engagement, in other words, isn't manufactured with notifications. It's a side effect of people enjoying themselves.

A cult following is charming until you have to show a chart. Partiful's caught up. In the first quarter of 2025 it averaged roughly half a million monthly active users - a figure it says climbed about 400% year over year - and added some two million new users across the year. The audience skews 20-to-30, with a noticeable concentration among startup founders, where a Partiful invite became its own quiet status symbol.
Free to host, fun to share, and - finally - a business underneath it.
Most apps monetize by gating the thing you came for. Partiful did the opposite. For five years the core stayed free - no premium tier, no paywall on your own birthday. The plan was patient: become the place people genuinely want to gather first, then build paid features around what they're already doing. Ticketing, launched in 2025, was the first real test of that idea. Group Order, with its flat $5 delivery fee, is the second.

The competition isn't another scrappy startup - it's the operating system on your phone. Holding ground there means staying the thing people choose, not the thing that comes pre-installed.
What's working in Partiful's favor is the same thing that nearly killed it. Gathering is a habit, not a feature, and habits are sticky. The platforms can copy the buttons; they can't easily copy the muscle memory of a generation that now reaches for Partiful the way an earlier one reached for Evite or a paper card. Each party invites people who aren't yet users, who host their own party, who invite more people still. The growth loop is the product, and the product is people having a good time. That is a hard thing to out-feature.
So back to that buzz at 9:41 PM. A few years ago that text would have been a wall of logistics, or an Evite no one opened, or a calendar invite destined to be declined by accident. Now it's a glowing card with the host's terrible, perfect cover photo, a button that already knows your answer, and a guest list you can watch fill up. The chore became the fun part. That was the whole bet - and it's paying off one party at a time.
They didn't reinvent the party. They just made the invitation worth opening.
