Every car owner in Singapore has, at some point, stared at a form they didn't understand. A dealer's offer that felt low but couldn't be checked. A COE deadline creeping up with no clear sense of whether to renew or let the car go. Motorist was built for exactly that moment of not-knowing - and the company's decade-long wager is that the not-knowing, repeated across millions of drivers, is itself a business.
What Motorist actually does
Motorist describes itself as a "super app for vehicle owners," which is a tidy way of saying it refuses to pick a single lane. Where most automotive startups choose one transaction - selling a used car, comparing insurance, arranging a loan - Motorist tries to sit across the entire ownership cycle. A driver can value and sell a car, buy a used or new one, renew a Certificate of Entitlement, book a pre-COE inspection, compare motor insurance, arrange financing, handle paperwork, or scrap and export a vehicle at the end of its life. Smaller utilities round out the app: fuel prices, parking rates, causeway traffic checkpoints, a loan calculator.
The through-line is administrative dread. Car ownership in Singapore is unusually paperwork-heavy - the COE system alone is famously complex - and Motorist's product is essentially a wrapper that makes those obligations legible and, where possible, transactable in a few taps. It doesn't try to change the rules of Singapore's car market. It tries to be the least painful way to navigate them.
An origin in one bad sale
The company's founding story is almost mundane, which is part of its appeal. In 2015, Damian Sia tried to sell his own car for the first time. He found the process inefficient and time-consuming, and - by his account - ran into dealers happy to exploit a first-timer's inexperience. The frustration became a thesis: the automotive trade runs on the customer's lack of knowledge, and a platform built on transparency could win the trust that brokers routinely spent.
Sia was not a first-time founder. Before Motorist he had cycled through a string of tech ventures - SeekSquare, Quotations, DirectCars, Suburb - accumulating the kind of unglamorous reps that rarely make headlines but tend to precede a company that sticks. Motorist began as a straightforward car-dealing platform and, over the following years, widened into the lifecycle ecosystem it is today.

Who uses it, and the problem it solves
Motorist's users are, broadly, everyday drivers - people who own one car and interact with it in bursts: a renewal here, a sale there, an insurance decision every year. That episodic relationship is precisely the difficulty. Consumers touch the car market too rarely to become expert in it, which is what leaves them exposed. Motorist's answer is to convert those anxious, infrequent questions into a standing product they can open at any time.
On the other side sits a B2B network of more than 3,300 certified automotive partners and dealers who agree to operate by the platform's rules. That network is arguably the harder thing Motorist built - a marketplace is only as trustworthy as its supply side, and assembling thousands of vetted partners is slow work that can't be shortcut with a funding round. Cumulatively, the company says it has served around 1.8 million motorists and facilitated more than S$3 billion in vehicle transactions.

The business model, and the moat
Motorist makes its money the way marketplaces tend to: commissions and fees on facilitated transactions - car sales, scrap and export - plus referral and commission income from financial products such as loans and motor insurance. The informational tools are free, which is the point. Free utilities keep drivers opening the app between big decisions, and when a big decision arrives, the transaction happens inside Motorist rather than at a dealership across town.
That bundling is also the differentiator. Singapore has capable single-purpose players - marketplaces like Carro and sgCarMart, insurers and brokers, classified listings on Carousell. What few of them attempt is the full lifecycle under one login. Motorist's bet is that a driver who sold a car through the platform will come back to insure the next one, and renew the COE after that. Deepening the relationship with an existing user, rather than endlessly chasing new ones, is the quieter half of the strategy.
Funding & backers
Motorist's early capital came from notable Singapore operators: angel and seed backing from JobsCentral co-founders Der Shing Lim and Shao-Ning Huang, and Zopim co-founder Royston Tay, in a seed round reported at roughly S$1.2 million. The step-change came in 2024, when Tokyo Century Corporation - a large Japanese leasing and finance group - led a US$60 million Series A, followed by an additional US$3 million from Tokyo Century's Singapore leasing arm. A strategic backer of that kind reads less as a growth-stage flyer and more as a bet on Motorist becoming regional infrastructure for vehicle transactions.

Where it fits in the market
Motorist sits at the intersection of three markets that usually operate separately: the automotive marketplace, consumer fintech (loans and insurance distribution), and everyday driver services. Its expertise is less in any one of those than in stitching them together and keeping the seams trustworthy. With Series A capital and a strategic leasing partner, the company has pushed the same model into Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, launching localized vehicle super apps on the assumption that opacity in car ownership is a problem common to every market in the region.
Whether that assumption holds across borders is the open question of the next few years. For now, the pitch is consistent with where it started - transparency as the product, the boring admin layer of car ownership as the opportunity.
