The quiet merchant behind the SNIPES wall

Dimitrios "Jimmy" Lessen spent 30 years learning to read youth culture through what actually sells. In February 2024 he took over merchandising for SNIPES USA - and inherited one of retail's harder jobs: deciding what a kid wants before the kid does.

Walk into a SNIPES store and the first thing you notice is the wall. Rows of sneakers, stacked to the ceiling, glowing under bright light like a museum that lets you touch the exhibits. It looks effortless. It is the opposite of effortless. Every box on that wall represents a decision - how many, which colorway, which size run, which store, which week. Multiply that by hundreds of stores and thousands of styles, and you have the job that lands on the desk of Dimitrios Lessen.

Lessen, who most people in the industry call Jimmy, became Chief Merchandising Officer of SNIPES USA in February 2024. The title sounds corporate. The work is anything but abstract. Merchandising is the discipline of predicting demand and translating it into physical inventory sitting in the right place at the right moment. Get it right and the wall sells itself. Get it wrong and you are staring at markdowns and dead stock. Lessen has been getting it mostly right for about 30 years.

01 / The apprenticeshipLearning the business from the inside

Before SNIPES, Lessen was a Foot Locker person - the kind of career that only makes sense if you actually love the product. He joined Foot Locker Europe in 2013 and stayed seven years, moving through roles from Divisional Merchandise Manager for footwear up to Vice President and General Merchandise Manager. Those years were not just about buying shoes. They were about building the machinery of modern retail: assortment planning, financial planning, allocation, replenishment, and the unglamorous but decisive art of e-commerce.

One colleague from that era, digital consultant Dennis Mühlenstädt, worked alongside Lessen from 2013 to 2020 as Foot Locker Europe expanded its online business across multiple countries and languages. The description Lessen earned was plain but telling - a "great leader, good student of the business and expert in his field." Notice the phrase "student of the business." Thirty years in, and the word people reach for is still student.

In 2020 he crossed the Atlantic, taking over as VP and General Merchandise Manager for Foot Locker North America and Global Men's Footwear. This is a serious perch. It means sitting across the table from the biggest names in footwear and deciding, on behalf of a giant retailer, what to bet on. It is a job measured in millions of pairs and built on something you cannot put in a spreadsheet: trust with the brands that make the product.

02 / The moveWhy a Foot Locker lifer went to a German challenger

SNIPES is not the obvious next step for a Foot Locker executive. It is a German company, founded in Cologne, that grew up inside street and sneaker culture and treats its stores less like shops and more like community hubs. It has expanded aggressively in the United States - from 64 stores to more than 350 in a few short years - which is exactly the kind of growth that makes the merchandising job both thrilling and terrifying.

Brian Forde, the retiring SNIPES USA Chief Merchandising Officer
Big shoes, literally. Lessen followed Brian Forde, a 40-year industry veteran, into the CMO seat.

The timing was dramatic. Lessen arrived in the middle of a leadership reshuffle: SNIPES founder Sven Voth had just stepped down as CEO, and the man Lessen replaced, Chief Merchandising Officer Brian Forde, was retiring after 40 years in the business. Forde was not a small act to follow - he had helped drive that US store expansion. Stepping into that seat during a transition is the corporate equivalent of taking the wheel while the car is still moving.

When the appointment was announced, Lessen framed it in the language of culture rather than commerce. "I look forward to working with the SNIPES team to keep elevating sneaker and streetwear retail through the brand's unique community-first model," he said. "It's the perfect new home to fuse my passion for the consumer and youth culture."

Read that quote twice and you catch the whole philosophy. He said consumer and culture, not consumer or culture. A lot of retailers treat those as separate departments - one for the numbers, one for the vibe. The best merchants know they are the same thing. What sells is what the culture wants, and what the culture wants is what the customer will pay for. Keeping those two ideas fused is, in a sentence, the job.

03 / The craftThe spreadsheet hiding inside the sneaker

Here is the part the industry glamour tends to hide. Sneaker retail looks like drops and hype and lines around the block. Underneath, it is one of the most demanding logistics puzzles in consumer goods. Lessen's remit covers the full stack of merchandising: central and regional buying, assortment and financial planning, space optimization, allocation, replenishment, and e-commerce. Each one is its own discipline. Together they decide whether the right shoe reaches the right store before the customer loses interest.

The reason SNIPES could hire Lessen and expect results quickly comes down to relationships. When his appointment was announced, SNIPES USA leadership pointed out that he is "highly trusted with our vendor partners" and brings "deep product passion and knowledge." In a market where the best product is scarce and allocated by hand, that trust is not a soft skill. It is inventory. The brands decide who gets the good stuff, and they give it to people they believe in.

04 / The patternReading demand before it arrives

Step back across the whole arc - Europe, then North America, then SNIPES - and a pattern emerges. Lessen keeps betting on the same asset: knowing the customer better than anyone else in the room. The geography changes, the logo on the door changes, the competitive position changes. The underlying skill does not. He reads what young shoppers will want next and arranges the supply chain to be ready when they want it.

2013Foot Locker Europe. Joins and rises through footwear merchandising roles to VP & General Merchandise Manager over seven years, helping scale the digital business across countries and languages.
2020Foot Locker North America. Becomes VP & General Merchandise Manager for North America and Global Men's Footwear, owning product strategy and buying.
2024SNIPES USA. Named Chief Merchandising Officer effective February 13, reporting to the SNIPES USA president and succeeding Brian Forde.

There is something refreshingly unhyped about all of this. Lessen is not a founder chasing a valuation or an athlete lending a name to a shoe. He is an operator - the person who makes the machine run so the culture out front has something to buy. The sneaker industry adores its designers and its endorsers, and it should. But someone has to decide what actually ships. For three decades, across two continents, that someone has been Dimitrios Lessen.

Whether SNIPES' community-first bet pays off in the crowded US market will be measured, in no small part, on the wall - on whether the right shoes are there when a customer walks in wanting them. It is a job with no victory lap and constant scoreboard. Lessen seems to like it that way. Thirty years in, still the student, still fusing the numbers and the culture into one long-running act of prediction.
