Consider the airport before you consider the airplane. A traveler in southern Connecticut can begin a Florida holiday at Tweed-New Haven, rather than first making a journey to a larger airport. The attraction is wonderfully prosaic: a different drive, a smaller terminal, fewer corridors between the front door and the gate. Avelo Airlines has made that overlooked part of travel central to its proposition. The vacation begins, in its telling, with less airport.
- Nonstop flights built around smaller, convenient airports.
- A low entry fare, with bags, seat choices and other extras sold separately.
- A 2026 reset that concentrated the network before another expansion.
There is an appealing cheek to this. Airlines spend enormous effort persuading passengers to admire what happens inside a cabin. Avelo asks them to appreciate where the cabin is parked. For families, holidaymakers and people visiting relatives, that can be a practical advantage. Nobody has ever returned from a trip wishing the walk through the terminal had been longer.
01The airport is part of the ticket
Founder Andrew Levy brought experience from Allegiant, where he had been president, and United, where he had been chief financial officer. His new venture began scheduled flying on April 28, 2021, from Burbank to Santa Rosa. It was a modest route with a clear invitation: get there without a connection. New Haven followed as an East Coast base in November.

The competitive position sits between familiar choices. Large network airlines offer connecting itineraries and extensive schedules. Leisure specialists such as Allegiant and Breeze also look for overlooked demand. Avelo’s version combines nonstop service with a preference for airports that make the ground portion less cumbersome. A small airport does not guarantee a cheap or convenient journey; it must be close to the people who actually want the flight.
That distinction matters to anyone copying the idea. An underserved place is a starting hypothesis. The business still needs sufficient demand on particular days, in particular directions, at a fare that covers the operation. A route map is very forgiving on paper. An aircraft full of unsold seats is less accommodating.
02The checkout has a second price
Avelo sells the seat, then sells choices around it. One under-seat personal item comes with the fare. Overhead carry-on luggage, checked bags and advance seat selection generally cost extra. Stretch adds legroom; Stretch+ adds the rather civilized pleasure of an empty middle seat. Paying to keep a seat unoccupied is a small comic masterpiece of airline economics.
access
Compare the finished trip, including your time.
The published options page currently lists Avelo PLUS at $59 for the first year and $99 annually afterward, with automatic renewal. Membership brings access to discounted fares and priority boarding. AveloFlex sells a one-time change or cancellation without the applicable change/cancel fee. Travelers should compare the final basket with competing flights and read the conditions before buying.
There are deliberate exceptions to the menu. Avelo’s family policy seats children aged 14 and under with an accompanying adult without an extra charge, subject to its conditions. The company also says it does not intentionally oversell flights. These promises address anxieties that become disproportionately irritating when a family is traveling together.
03Reliability has to earn its keep
A bargain loses its charm when the flight disappears. For 2024, Avelo reported an 83.9% on-time arrival rate and a 0.48% cancellation rate, using Anuvu data. Its reported industry comparison put average on-time arrivals at 77.6%. “On time” here means arrival within 15 minutes of schedule. Those are dated measures of operations, rather than promises about your next departure.
In June 2026, Avelo added optional Disruption Assistance through Hopper Technology Solutions. Eligible disruptions can trigger self-service alternatives on Avelo or another airline, or a refund option under the product’s terms. It is a paid supplement. For a passenger with inflexible plans, the useful questions remain flight frequency, backup options and what happens after a cancellation.
“Keep It Simple”
One of Avelo’s published company values
04The map got smaller
Simplicity has been harder to maintain than to advertise. Avelo raised approximately $125 million in January 2020 and another $42 million in Series B funding in January 2022. Further growth capital arrived in September 2025. Yet Travel Weekly reported a $35.6 million net loss for the first nine months of 2025. Carrying more people and making money are separate achievements.
The original Burbank base was wound down in 2025. January 2026 brought a recapitalization and another concentration: bases at Mesa, Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina, would close, while six 737-700s would leave the fleet. Closing a crew base did not mean abandoning every flight to that city. The operating center of gravity shifted toward four remaining bases.

The most contentious detour was deportation flying for the Department of Homeland Security. Avelo took the charter work in 2025 and faced customer and employee backlash. When it announced its exit in January 2026, its stated reason was commercial: revenue had not justified the operational complexity and costs. Reuters reported that Avelo said boycott calls had not affected its business. Public opposition and the airline’s explanation should not be collapsed into a single proven cause.
05A different airplane, a familiar bet
The next chapter changes the machinery. A September 2025 order covers 50 Embraer E195-E2s, with rights for 50 more. The firm order’s $4.4 billion figure is list value, not a disclosed purchase bill. Later company materials anticipate operations in 2028, rather than the original 2027 delivery timetable. The planned 140-seat, two-by-two cabin eliminates middle seats and supports the search for markets suited to smaller jets.
Meanwhile, Avelo reported reaching ten million cumulative passenger journeys in August 2026. Its McKinney base is scheduled to open November 11; a September announcement expanded the planned network there to nine destinations. The wager remains recognizable. Make the trip easier from its first mile, charge carefully for the rest, and find enough people who prefer the nearby runway.
